Last night at the Saturn Awards I did what every “Star Trek” fan wishes they could do…I asked director J.J. Abrams if he was going to come back for the sequel.
While he didn’t say yes or no, he said they’ve been having talks on the sequel right now and he’s excited by the possibilities. As you may have seen earlier this week, I posted an interview with “Star Trek” screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and we talked a lot about what kind of villain would be in the sequel.
J.J. told me conversations are underway discussing that very subject right now. So if you’ve been hearing no work is being done on the next “Star Trek” movie… think again.
If you loved J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” as much as I did, you’re going to love this interview. Take a look:
J.J. Abrams
- Says they’ve been having conversations about the sequel
- I mention how me moves on from franchise to franchise
- I ask about the villain in the sequel
- Comic-Con talk
and make sure to check the Collider front page for ton’s of other red carpet video interviews from the 2009 Saturn Awards
Q: Everyone wants to know, what are the chances of you getting back in the director’s chair?
Abrams: We just started talking about ideas… we’ve just begun this process so it’s so early that it’s insane to, you know – I have no idea; but I would say that it’s that kind of feeling that as we’re talking about stories you start to salivate, like ‘oh my God I can’t wait to do that!’ and so that feels good and my guess is that as we continue it will become clearer how we will plan out what will happen. But it’s been really fun – even the cursory discussions we’ve had so far
Q: You’re the master of starting franchises…
Abrams: No I’m not!
Q: You started a lot of really great things – “Alias”, “Fringe”… I’ve seen your track record where you start things and, kind of, move on, so I guess I’m a little nervous that “Star Trek” might not hold your attention.
Abrams: Well, all I can tell you is movies and TV shows, it’s like, I could not feel luckier to get to do these things and on “Trek” in particular because I never really knew it… I won’t be walking away from “Trek” in any way in the next film and if we’re lucky enough to get that made and, you know, maybe do another one I think there is a sense of ownership… I love that world. I love the characters and we were so lucky to get the cast we got so I just feel like – I feel too lucky to be a part of this thing to say goodbye to it.
Q: I just interviewed Bob and Alex… they were talking about not having the typical movie villain but maybe having nature or…
Abrams: Oh! I see what you’re saying. Well, I’m open to anything. We’ve had some really interesting discussions so far but, you know – you have to be open to everything to find the right thing so the answer is sure, I’m open to that. I think in a story it’s important to personify, somehow, what you’re up against so it’s a tricky one to figure out how to, like, fight evil wind! (evil look for emphasis).

The first movie was total drek and I’d expect any subsequent ones to be at least as craptastic. The whole spin-off, alternate Star Trek universe was pathetic. I wish the movie everything it and the director deserves for dumbing down the movie to lure Star Trek noobs to it. Bah.
Ya…to bad it was awesome.
Dude, the film has been called awesome by both star trek fans and non-star trek fans alike, everywhere. The film was, like oohrah said, a godamn miracle.
Inneresting sucks it was not drek
yeah dude you’re pretty much an idiot if you think that movie sucked.
Seriously, this movie was well directed, well acted, and well action packed. It is making a killing in the box office and will most likely spawn a billion dollar a movie franchise. Those who don’t like it, welcome to the 3%

Abrams’ Star Trek was a goddamn miracle. It blew me away. I have grown up with star trek and I was incredibly saddened by the diminishing quality of the later trek movies.. i.e. Nemesis. This new installment was incredible. The writers deserve a lot of credit. The alternate universe thread was the only possible way they could have started fresh. Also the cast was incredible. In the sequel I want to see more exploration themes and klingons!

Yeah, you think it’s drek because you are a complete Star Trek nerd! You probably go to the Star Trek conventions dressed up and ask the old actor’s of the series stupid ass questions about certain episodes. You suck!

I liked the new Star Trek film. It didn’t necessarily blow me out of the water, but I’d give it 7 out of 10 stars. I’m not going to quibble over how much it deviated from official Star Trek “canon;” this is science fiction after all, not world history. As a special effects nut, I was satisfied with the eye candy.
(I WILL say that the death of Spock’s mother, Amanda, was really unnecessary to the plot, but that’s probably because I was awfully fond of Amanda as played by Jane Wyatt in the original series.)
All that having been said, my biggest hope for any sequel to J.J. Abrams’ film is that it’s just a little bit MEATIER. You have to admit, the storyline for this “reboot” was a bit on the slender side, as if the main point was to introduce the new cast.
One question, though: WHY such a focus on creating a VILLAIN? Does every movie have to have a VILLAIN? Conflict is great, drama is great, but some of the best Star Trek episodes and movies didn’t have VILLAINS per se. I suspect the astronauts on the future are going to be disappointed when they realize the Universe isn’t crawling with VILLAINS.
uh, yeah dude, ever hear of protagonist and antagonist? take a lit. class dude.
what you are talking about is theory, not absolute law…
I am offended by your characterization of our future astronauts as deluded fanboys.

I think the next Trek villain should be an internal villain. A villain from within Starfleet or the Federation. It’s been done before in some of the episodes from various trek shows, but never really done in a Trek movie. If the can create an imposing villain that is from Staefleet and intertwine a story of how evil within can be as bad or worse than evil from an outside source, then I think they will have a winner.

Why a Villain?
Maybe it’s not enough to just prevail anymore…we have to “stick it to them” whoever “them” may be. Our attention span has shortened so much in this technological day and age that we need a clear “us vs them” mentality or a clear side to root for . Everything is a sport isn’t it?
If the “Astronauts of the future” ever venture far enough where territories don’t belong to us, I promise you, the universe will be “crawling with VILLAINS”.

SURE wish JJ would stop babbling about how much he never “knew” ANYTHING about Star Trek, before Paramount handed him the keys to Roddenberry’s Universe. Doesn’t JJ realize, he’s dissing the very Legend that created such a strong fanbase, even after all these years? By going on & on about he never cared one bit about TREK, he is dissing us all. STOP IT please.

I like the idea of an internal villian. How about some high ranking starfleet admiral purposefully trying to start a war with some other race say the klingons…kind of a twist on the storyline from undiscovered country…either that or a something liek the enterprise encountering a worm hole and being transported to an unknown quadrant…ie voyager but better.

Kahn would be pretty sick too. They would just have to find someone badass enough to play him….im thinking Javier Bardem with long hair. He was awesome in No Country for Old men.

Watching Star Trek in black & white in the 60′s was a thrill and I’ve enjoyed most of the movies. I didn’t really expect to like this one so much.
The first few minutes didn’t grab me and I was expecting more of the same.
Holy Moly. I cried, I laughed, I was delighted, skeptical, intrigued and ultimately convinced of it’s ‘rightness’.
A huge treat that left me in a good mood for a week.
I want to see it again.

Perhaps, with all the time travelling that Time Trek undergoes, the space/time continuum should FINALLY unravel and threaten to destroy the universe. But then again, that plot was covered in Futurama. It’s gonna be hard to find a plot that Futurama hasn’t lampooned.

While the movie wasn’t perfect, it was definitely entertaining, and the best summer movie this year — that is, comparing it to Terminator, Transformers and Wolverine.
It could have been deeper, but I accept it as an opener for a new franchise.
My main beef about it is how the villain played by Eric Bana wasn’t all too scary. It wasn’t Bana’s fault, I chalk it up the character. For a guy with a 25-year-grudge, he wasn’t threatening. Just a guy who looked angry.
While the Star Wars prequels had many faults, the villains were always scary and threatening, even Count Dooku, who ended up just being a pawn.
Hopefully, the next Trek movie will have a frightening villain and a deeper story.

J.J. Abram’s is one of the most solid (and dynamic) director’s of our time. Star Trek (2009) is my favorite film of the year to date. It was a great film. All of my friends liked it a lot (said it was great, awaesome, and/or claimed to love it. I simply wish the final confrontation with Nero was a little longer but how does one physically defeat someone so advanced? I accepted his evolved strength as did most people. Still, slightly lengthier intense combat (one-on-one) choreography could have been interesting, exciting. But I’m glad the director didn’t overdue stuff, as even the final fight via “Revenge of the Sith” grew tired at times IMO. J.J. Abram’s cared about the characters, story, plot, music, action; there was good and aware messages. All aspects of Star Trek (2009) were well done. The film was smart too, the action great, and the movie had a heart, the latter doesn’t seem to apply to the general action-thriller adventure now days. Furthermore, the film didn’t disgrace the originals; the director created an explanation that IMO enhanced the Star Trek mythos, legend. I would love if J.J. Abram’s directed a sequel.

The original series had two episodes that revolved around Nazis taking over the world (episode classic The City On the Edge of Forever). Nazis and Klingons – two villains you can’t top.

I didn’t care for it. Sorry to all those who laughed, cried, and found it the most amazing thing since sliced bread. I just didn’t, I know there are those who will call me names and if they have something intelligent to say, fine.
I thought Nemisis was good, the reason most people I know didn’t like it was because Data died; Brent Spiner wanted it that way. I thought it went well. going back and rebooting the entire history and then saying it’s for the fans of action movies NOT for star trek fans was a very cheap shot. I was a bit bored frankly, it was lots of action, flashy lights and explosions- with a title called Star Trek. That was all.

I sure hope he gets started on the Dark Tower series first. Don’t get me wrong I loved the Star Trek movie, but I’d like to see him make some progress with Dark Tower so bad.

The sequal, should have a Female version of Khan. After all its alternate universal. But if i recall the sequal may do this, TNG and TOS timelines this would be interesting to see.
As for future villians that our Astronauts will find. Heck we have found one villian already, and it’s called Space. The fight it each time they go up into space.
I want them to do a new TV series, and here are some ideas.
1.Based on the Alternate timelines.
2.Based in the 26, 27, 28, 29 or 30th centry, where they have personal Transporter belts, They wrap around using Slipstream (was in voyager) or they use probes to visit the star systems then they beam down to the planets, Personal Sheilds, Personal Computers, Nano-Regeneration(no need for doctors anymore), Mobile Imitor Away/Engineer Teams, Bio-Phasers(which uses Borg Nanites, and stops people, as like energy beams did), as for the furniture is it all either holographic or you press a button where you float in the air thats the bed etc. This technology is what i can think of that can WOW people like the technology from TNG did. Now it would have to have a unique person, TOS had Spock, TNG had Data, DS9 had Odo, Voyager had Kes at first But then had Seven of Nine, Enterprise had??. That being said these people WOW us, and this future unique person has to WOW us also. Perhaps a being that can Copy itself or has special powers like superhero powers of some type.
3.Based on an Enterprise that is a timeship, and has to repair timelines that villians have or had corupted.
What are your thoughts on my post?
