Who said Mondays were lame? Sure, the weekend provided us with a flurry of news in regards to Edward Norton’s role (or lack thereof) in Marvel’s 2012 blockbuster The Avengers. But the weekend is over, and the hits just keep on coming. In wake of Norton’s official exclusion from the film and his agent’s cyber-blasting of Marvel, CHUD is now reporting that the studio has already spoken to Norton’s potential replacement: the pseudo-retired Joaquin Phoenix.
While the report maintains the news comes from a reliable source, it’s probably best to take this as rumor for the time being (at least until we get a new Hulk update about 15 minutes from now). Nevertheless, hit the jump for more info on Phoenix’s speculated offer to go green.
By now, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “does this mean Joaquin’s debut rap album is getting delayed?” That worst-case scenario may very well be the case as the CHUD report claims that Marvel has already offered the role to the actor in hopes of avoiding the sound of crickets that would currently follow, “And playing The Hulk is…” at The Avengers Comic-Con panel in a few weeks.
Last seen in 2008′s Two Lovers, the two-time Oscar nominee is reportedly considering the offer, which is apparently the lowest salary of any of the current Avengers (it’s because he’s green isn’t it?), as a potential return from his rap career which was, in all likelihood (fingers crossed), a complete farce created as part of the Casey Affleck documentary he worked with. Regardless of Phoenix’s decision, though, the news is a solid indicator that Marvel is fully set on casting the role of Hulk sooner rather than later.

Pretty sure the reason Norton isn't coming back is because of his habit of re-writing scripts, pushing his “vision” on directors etc. Look at what he did on “American History X” he also re-wrote “Incredible Hulk” and is rumored to be very difficult to work with. Phoenix would be good but someone like Patrick Wilson or Sharlto Copley would also work just as well. Whatever happens we'll find out soon enough.

oh wow. we go from bashing the studio for going with an unknown to save money to this asshole. The first source was that washed up shit from AICN and now CHUD reports something different. The truth is nobody know what the fuck they're talking about although I do trust CHUD more than anywhere else. Collider should just report on rumors only from now on…oh, wait. And I love this site, but come on. We've all known Norton wouldn't be in The Avengers just like we all know Joss Whedon probably won't end up directing it. Now I'm going to have to endure all my friends telling me about how they heard River Phoenix is going to be the Hulk.
Sharlto Copley is my number 1 choice, along with a better HULK creature design.
As for Pheonix, good actor and likeable, but does this mean HULK will have a hair-Lip ???

Would Jason Barr quit stirring the shit pot that the Avengers will be? The only way that movie can be even acceptable is if they get Ed Norton to just do the voice acting for the Hulk and sign John Travolta to be Fing Fang Foom. Plus dump that asshat Jackson for the original Fury, Hasselhoff.
I really hope this is true…this is an actor who deserves a big franchise and to see him carry the Hulk into another sequel (3quel?) would be fantastic!
I loved Sharlto Copley in District 9, but that accent…can you imagine? “Hulk smash fookin' puny human”? Weird.
