John Carter is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on June 5, and I hope it finds a second life in home release. I don’t know what it would take to justify a sequel, but for the sake of ambitious, lush science fiction like this, it would be unfortunate if the lasting legacy was that of a flop. The expansive universe, as designed by Edgar Rice Borroughs, is really built for serialization. We have seen this potential realized on screen in the many properties that were inspired by John Carter of Mars. Jon Favreau points to Star Wars and Superman as two indelible franchises that benefit from the Mars mythos in the featurette, “Influence of John Carter,” which will appear on the Blu-ray. We were provided a one-minute clip from the featurette, with supporting remarks by Willem Dafoe (the voice of Tars Tarkas in the movie), and we’d like to share it with you after the jump.

Will be buying this. My wife and I really enjoyed the movie despite a frustrating viewing experience (at an IMAX theater of all places).
Everyone I talk to who has seen it has liked it quite a bit. Andrew Stanton sank his own insanely hard work by trying to maintain control over marketing, which he clearly has no talent in. (Before you go defending him, there is a great Variety story that you need to read about it.)
Sadly, he also made a couple key storytelling mistakes that keep the movie from being truly great — a relatable and believable relationship takes the passage of time and you can accomplish that without using up screen time. I really expected the core story elements to be solid after Nemo and Wall-e so I was surprised — look at how long those characters took to develop loving relationships! Small important details tend to get overlooked in projects as giant as this movie, however.
I have little hope for a sequel, but I’d LOVE for it to happen and frankly, I’d want Andrew Stanton to do it!
I would have to echo your thoughts. I really liked this movie and even saw it multiple times in the theater. The points you make are very true. Stanton did a great job with this movie but should have developed the story and relationships better.
They should have done a true version of Princess of Mars because the action and story would have been great. Hell they could have spilt the book up and focused on the many characters of that book.
I may be in the minority but I really dug Kitsch as JC. In fact I liked him a lot. The scene with the Warhoons was CLASSIC.. All time great scene. More of that is what JC needed.
I loved the books really liked the movie and I would love to see a sequel so I hope a lot of people buy this on video.
Stanton returning would be fine with me as well..
JC!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this movie quite a few times in theaters, to experience it on the big screen while I could.
I’ve tried to avoid Blu-Ray for as long as I could, but it was John Carter that made me think “Maybe *some* movies are worth buying on this format…”
Pre-ordered it as soon as I could!
WHY those god awful covers? Why not something more appealing? The different fan covers I’ve seen are much nicer than this Photoshop hack!
Darn straight.
I was lamenting the same thing. I really enjoyed this movie. I’ll be buying it for sure, but those covers would inspire no one to buy it outright.
What the hell happened to cover art? Everything looks like work done in an introductory high school course on Photoshop.
Movie was so frustrating. They changed so many things from the book. Edgar Rice Burroughs is rolling over in his grace.
The movie was a mess, with an utterly bland nobody in the lead to boot. not acceptable for a movie of this size/scope/pricetag. The marketing was just ONE of its problems.
I agree I just saw this, I couldn’t tell what the hell was going on most of the time. Got only a very broad inkling but really didn’t care. The lead actor was so MEH. Could have been Mark Walhberg for all I cared.
What is with the obnoxiously long unskippable ads? The one minute commercial went longer than the goddamn John Carter clip.
the only legacy is the biggest hollywood flop in history
I really, really, REALLY wanted to like JC. But I felt the story-telling and character-building were too muddled too much of the time. If someone like me (who read all the JC books as a kid) isn’t getting into it, why should someone with no knowledge of the stories?
I expected much better of Stanton, who clearly had to shoot with a script that wasn’t ready. At Pixar he had had the luxury of several years to “crack the story” and do major redos. Here he didn’t. And it’s a shame. Still, I’ll probably pick up the Blu Ray when it gets cheap enough. There’s some wonderful eye candy in the movie and a few moments worth seeing.
Our whole family loved the film with its balance of action, romance, humor, spectacular scenery and outstanding special effects (such as the airships). The story develpment was far better than many movies coming out that have little plot and little time for character development. (Such as Avatar which was a precise copy of Disney’s Pochohantas story-line). We felt Lynn Collins gave an excellent performance and the rest of the cast certainly did a good job too. I had read and enjoyed the Barsoom books but that does not hinder anyone from just enjoying John Carter as a good movie on its own.
We will be buying this movie. I think the biggest problem with JC was the marketing. I’ll agree it’s not a great movie, but it is a fun movie and I think undeserving of the critical scorn it received.
