Final Trailer for JOHN CARTER

     February 28, 2012

I’ve heard good things about John Carter from people who have seen it, but sadly the film’s marketing has been a mess.  A recent featurette finally showed off the film’s scope and so does the final trailer.  But none of the trailers (except one that was fan-made, and far better than any of Disney’s trailers) took a single moment to explain who John Carter is, how he got to Mars, and why he has special powers.  Does any audience member who is unfamiliar with the source material, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel A Princess of Mars, know anything about the character beyond “Shirtless Dude Who Fights Weird Creatures”?  The movie is titled “John Carter” and Disney never took the time to tell us anything about him.

Hit the jump to check out the final trailer.  The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Haden Church, and Willem DafoeJohn Carter opens in IMAX and 3D on March 9th.

Here’s the official synopsis for John Carter:

From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

I have the feeling that Disney are actually trying to make something that’s been in development for 81 years a box office failure.

Wow not even this trailer is any good. Andrew Stanton should be embarrassed this film is even being marketed by Disney

Man,even the final trailer sucks. What the fuck is Disney doing to this movie ?

  • Hrothgar

It’s really too bad because after actually learning the premise I’m interested in seeing John Carter. But every single Disney trailer really turned me off. As someone who’s never read that particular book I had nothing to go on other than “Guy goes to other planet during Civil War era? Guy fights? There’s a woman?”

The movie is going to be amazing, the people who have seen it already just love it. But, will people go see it is another question. Hopefully word of mouth and the internet will save it.

I fully stand by my previous statements that anyone who worked on the marketing team at Disney for this movie should be fired.

“ok everyone I know how to fix this , lets just say Earth is next and everyone will know its like super important they see it”

This was perhaps the the worst and most confusing trailer yet for people that have no idea what or who John Carter is. I think the movie looks badass and I have heard/read good things. But they really effffffed this marketing strategy up big time

Has Disney finally decided they just have too much money ?

This movie looks like shit… at least from the trailer.

John Carter explained: John is transported to Mars. He is not the only stranger on Mars–the baldies with the weird eyes. John is good, the baldies, bad. The Martian races– there are two: red and green–were already at war with one another before John and the baldies arrived. The green race is divided into factions–all greens dislike reds but their distrust and hatred for other greens will make them ally with the baldies–who are the primary antagonists–while the other greens and the red ally with John. This movie won’t be as convoluted as the trailers.

John arrives, meets friendly green guys, but they are holding a red princess prisoner; John helps her escape; the more sophisticated reds know the baldies are a threat to all of Mars. John convinces the friendly greens to join him and the reds, so that together they can defeat the baldies and mean greens

I am assuming that like Superman he has some different kind of strengths on Mars because of the gravity maybe but in none of these trailers does it explain this. Most people I know that don’t watch too much sci-fi always ask about it. They are like “hmm so a guy from the Civil War can fly around and kill monsters on Mars? Looks dumb”

Now from what they have explained on the trailers to most people it would look dumb.
