New Images from JOHN CARTER

Last week a new image from Wall-E director Andrew Stanton’s John Carter popped up online, and now six more images have been unveiled in anticipation of the new trailer dropping next Thursday. Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter of Mars, the sci-fi pic tells the story of a former Confederate soldier who is transported to Mars right in the middle of an epic conflict between the planet’s inhabitants. I wasn’t exactly wowed by the first trailer, so I’m hoping this new one looks more promising. These images are pretty cool, and give us a look at some neat creatures from the film (including Tars Tarkas played by Willem Dafoe), but the film still looks like an incredibly hard sell to general audiences. Hopefully this new trailer will alleviate concerns, as I think Stanton’s an extremely talented filmmaker.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, and Thomas Hayden Church. John Carter opens in 3D on March 9th.

Here’s the official synopsis for John Carter:

From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

  1. A few questions… So, I’m assuming from the shots of the “aliens” that this is a claymation movie? Is this a Ray Harryhausen production? Why is everything on Mars potato colored? Haven’t they spent around 200 million on this mess? Finally, is it possible to get my money in advance?

  2. Looks like a bad ass sci-fi themed slightly more adult version of Neverending Story. I’m in! Tron was a disaster, but not all Disney movies suck and Wall-E was fantastic.

  3. i have a bad feeling pwople are gonna say it is copying avatar and star wars when in reality JCOM came before those 2 movies were even thought of

    • My hopes are high for this movie but my expectations are tempered.
Although the trailer was short, the film seems to have that other-worldly feel to it and that is awesome.

Yes it does have a Star Wars feel and one of the creatures seem to be the offspring of Jabba the Hut.
This may not be a bad thing I hope it has some of the same epic qualities as Star Wars.

I HOPE Disney doesnt turn it into a PRINCE OF PERSIA type movie. That movie sucked Ass never once did I feel the urgency of the story or give a sh**.
JCOM has the potential to go either way.

  4. I’m interested. I stumbled across a very dated translation of the first book when I was about ten, almost dismissed it due to the “princess” in the title (“A Princess of Mars”), but once I was about twenty pages in simply couldn’t believe my luck.

This is the greatest boyhood fantasy-fulfillment story ever: an alternate exotic world of adventure, unexpected super powers, detailed descriptions of weaponry, a monstrous but loyal pet, acceptance and ultimately admiration from by the big boys (/local warrior class), a messianic mission that manifests in battle (not empathy or some hippy bull) and a romantic subplot that is completely secondary and non-mushy.

My main concern is that when updating the tough-love boys-adventure tone from the turn of the century (due to some imperialistic, racist and sexist overtones) it might all go very bland. There has to be a hard edge to this, and there absolutely mustn’t be a Jar-Jar Binks lurking there somewhere…

  5. looks cool but im betting it will bomb. changing the name from john carter of mars was a terrible idea, and the marketing has been pretty nonexistant

  6. Been waiting 50 years for somebody to do this movie and I never expected it would be Disney. As suggested by other poster, I expect to be hideously disappointed. For me, growing up in the 50′s and 60′s, THIS was WRB’s best work – Tarzan was already a joke by then. When Heinlein started quoting it in his later novels, I was sure somebody would make the move, but that was 30 years ago. So far, the trailer and the new pics make me want to slit my thoat. (no, that’s not a typo, it’s a joke. Read the book)

  7. I’m still optomistic. I think they tried really hard with that first teaser, but I’m betting there just wasn’t enough finsihed effects work, it left me with very little to go on. The look of the martians is spot on for me. Especially Woola.

The key will be in the performances and tone. The overall look of the film is almost a little too washed out as I imagined much more color from the books description.

In the end, it’s Andrew Stanton and the source material that lead me to believe this movie is going to be very good. Hope the marketing catches up soon!

  8. Looks like they used the sets of Return of the Jedi and Waterworld to save a buck.

As long as it’s nothing like that utterly shit movie Cowboys vs Aliens we should be alright. My god that was bad.
