Exclusive: John Davis Talks About the PREDATOR Franchise, Potential Sequels, Reveals What Stopped Arnold from Doing PREDATOR 2

A few days ago I sat down with producer John Davis for an extended interview.  While the main purpose of our sit down was to talk about his new family film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey, we also covered his early career, his thoughts on VOD, his relationship with Eddie Murphy, what he has coming up, and many other subjects.  Since the conversation was so wide ranging, I’m breaking it up into smaller parts, like I did with my interviews with producers Dan Lin and Neal Moritz.

While I debated what to post first, I’m going with Predator.  Davis served as a producer on every Predator film including the two Alien vs. Predator movies. As a big fan of what producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal did last year on Predators, I was curious if we’d get a sequel, and what was up with the franchise.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like anything is happening right now.  However, I did learn that Schwarzenegger almost did Predator 2 and the deal broke down over $250,000.  Hit the jump for more.

Predators-movie-imageThe big news for fans of the franchise is that nothing is brewing right now.  Davis said that even though all the Predators movies make money, “it needs to rest for a couple of years.”  He went on to say that it’s all about finding new ways to reinvent the franchise.  He went on to say:

“I can’t see why if we can’t be clever we can’t reinvent it again.”

However, while another sequel/reboot might be somewhere down the road, I learned an interesting fact from the past.  According to Davis, Schwarzenegger almost made Predator 2 and “the deal broke down over $250,000.”  With how much money Schwarzenegger makes, it crazy to think such a small number kept him out of the sequel.  However, back in 1990, Schwarzenegger made Total Recall and if he had agreed to be in Predator 2, perhaps one of his best roles would have never happened.

Here’s the part of my conversation with Davis about the Predator franchise.  Look for more with Davis tomorrow or Wednesday.

Collider: You started with Predator and I really dug the reboot you did with Robert Rodriguez.  How successful was that for the studio in terms of maybe making another one?

John Davis:  You know, those Predator movies…Tom Rothman said this to me, “Man, they all seem to make money.”  I get a big check every year on my net points off of the original Predator.  You know how hard it is to get net points on a studio movie, right?  It was hugely profitable.  It far exceeded its revenue on DVD than in theaters by three or four times.

John_Davis_ProducerYou’re talking about the original, right?

Davis:  Yes.  I talked to Arnold about rebooting Predator and doing something in terms of that.  I think in terms of right now, it needs to rest for a couple of years.  I can’t see why if we can’t be clever we can’t reinvent it again.

I actually really dug it.  I thought Rodriguez did a great job with it.

Davis:  Yeah.  It was really fun.

It was really good.  That’s why as a fan I’d love to see another one.

Davis:   Yeah.  He changed the setting.  He put it on another planet.  You have to keep changing the setting.  You have to find a clever way to do it.  If we were going to do it with Arnold; it was like, “Does it make sense to go back and to put him with a young team?”  So maybe it’s 20 years later, you have retired, and you are the one person who has survived one of these encounters.  Is that a reboot in the fact that you are in it with a group of young guys?  Is that a reboot?  You just have to figure out a way to reboot it.  Rodriguez rebooted it.  It’s all in the planet.  The sequel to the first one rebooted it.  We should’ve had Arnold in the movie.  The deal broke down over $250,000, which is a shame.  But it was moved from the jungle to the city.  You have to create a freshness about it.  When we did Alien vs. Predator we kind of rebooted it because we put the two pieces together.  You just have to give it enough time to come up with a new freshness.  It is what they did so brilliantly with Fast Five.

    • Ever since Predator 2 came out, this franchise never was held in high regard by FOX. All the AVPs and the the cheesefest that was Predators were all ways to make a quick buck. They had very poor production values (Ex. Avp R and Predators) especially script/story wise. A sign that those were going to be lesser movies rests immediately on the type/ caliber of director chosen. Robert Rodriguez? C’mon. John Davis’s “Yeah. It was really fun.” is just interview fodder. He knows that P1 is the one that had a real backed up project. And knows that Predators failed: “…it needs to rest for a couple of years”. Had it been successful Fox was already pushing a sequel…

  1. Great work Frosty on asking what is happening with the Predator series. It’s a shame he says nothing is really happening right now, as I thought the idea would be to make a sequel straight after with Adrien Brody and continue on the hunting planet. I’d love to see Arnold return though.

I wonder what Davis’ thoughts are on the AVP movies now.

  2. “interviewer: I actually really dug it. I thought Rodriguez did a great job with it.

Davis: Yeah. It was really fun.

interviewer:: It was really good. That’s why as a fan I’d love to see another one.

Yeah… Davis dug it, cough cough. Talk about force feeding someone lines or just plain kissing fox’s ass.

    • if you’ve ever seen me in a video blog or heard me talk, you’d know I don’t say shit I don’t mean. I thought Predators was a great sequel. and I’d love to see another one by the same filmmakers.

      • I believe he meant Davis was kissing Fox’s ass cause his responses didn’t seem at all like he cared for Predators. He seemed very uninterested but towed the company line for the purpose of the interview.

      • Eh, you know what-

i’ll give you this one- i was being an ass- and i apologize, sorry steve-

I personally am not a big fan of RR’s Predators- and would rather see a fresh start as his produced sequel didn’t add much to the universe-

      • @WyldeMan45

yeah i was talking about Davis, but i don’t need to be a jerk-

        apologies around.

      • This guys is a douche even though he apologized. I hate when people apologize for what they say, be a man and stick by your words.

I couldnt disagree with him more. I didnt think any question was force fed. While reading the interview you can tell the interviewer was a fan of the movie and was politely pushing for a more candid response to the question. He just did it in a nice way not a D-bag way like some. I felt like he was dodging the question. Fans of the last film want to know if there will be another film with brody and braga, not just a “clever” response.

To echo the Frosty’s thoughts I realy dug this film as well. Im my opinion they are totally messing up this franchise.
Hey lets keep putting different characters in different locales and “keep it fresh and clever”. STUPID A$$ producers. How about continuing the story and delving deeper into the universe of the Predators, fuck arnold who gives a shit about him anymore. Brody’s take was great in all its cheesiness glory! Ala Bale in TDK

Predators was really good and should have been the sequel to part 1 as stated on this website before. This producer should feel ashamed they are not moving forward with Rodriguez’s vision. Instead they want to “reboot” with 95 yr old Arnie? Its amazing how these dumbass producers keep getting work.

I am over hollywood dipshits and their unwillingness to take a chance and stick with something.

But its clear from his (davis’s) reponses he is more worried about milking as much money from this thing as he can and obviously does not care about the quality of the films. Instead he wants “clever” reboots, which is code for ” lets make the cheapest most profitable films we can.

    • Incredible how someone can see whatever they want to see.

Someone can’t even say “yeah. it was really fun.” without it being ass kissing?

maybe he did believe it was fun. is that so far fetched?
or maybe he just didn’t want to start a beef and lose a business relationship that could cost more films.
that isn’t ass kissing. nothing to be gained by publicly bashing a business partner.

      give it a break

    • @ Mark

not only are you a douche, you are a douche who can read?
This is just step one in getting out of your Mom’s basement, dipshit..

Stop hating on the website because you are a talentless, frustrated virgin, who could never hack it in the real world. get a life moron…

  3. While I hate to preface this post with a typical troll mantra, I have to say, Predators was a piece of shit.

    What hooked you?

When bloated Laurence Fishburne showed up crazy for 5 minutes and tried to kill everyone? At least that enabled the one Asian guy to get (gasp) a sword.

What about Surly Adrien Brody brooding his way through the flick with the saddest, most generic cast of tertiary characters since Transformers?

And the new dash of spice on this casserole of crap? Super Predator. Ooooooooooh and they hate Predator Classic. Enemy of my enemy, eh? Didn’t they try to pull the same shitty plot device at the end of Predator vs. Alien? How did that turn out? Exactly.

Bad casting, terrible story, horrible plot, tired action, no suspense.

Who gives a flying frak if it was set on a different planet? That’s not a reboot. It’s a goddam effect. It’s a green screen. I’d rather the whole movie be set inside an Old Navy if they could churn out a worthwhile story, decent action and a passable characters.

“I can’t see why if we can’t be clever we can’t reinvent it again.” Give me a break. Clever shouldn’t cost $10 you asshole.

      • Tissue? Yes. For my tears. I had to wait 3 days before my Predators DVD was exiled until the next arrived via Netflix.

Can you believe while this “film” was made people stood around and nodded at this pile and thought it was a good idea? And I would imagine this new fan-boy suckling actually made money. Drag out another famous property and get them to watch it… awesome.

Enough smoke was blown enough asses, man, we could solve some smoke-needing charity for a long while.

There is no advance in the property. They just want your cash. It’s slightly above average horse-pie. Once critical acclaim (sigh) lessens, they will go straight-to-video and scum out a few more coins in the Wal-Mart bin.

Make a good one. Send me a screener, I will change my song.

  4. I thought Predators was great (not the best film ever, not as good as the first, but still fun) and I would have said the same thing if I was doing the interview. I’d love to see more Predator movies in that vein rather than the wretched AvP abominations.

  5. predators was the worst film of the franchise…even AVP2 Requiem is awesome next to that piece of crap…the main reason? rodriguez involvement…

    • Predators was far from the worst. I felt it was a damn good movie except it paid a little to much homage to the first film. (if thats possible) I’d definately go see a sequel to Predators.

Rodriguez did an excellent job with the film.

      • Ye sure…so excellent that there is no sequel on sight at least for a long time, according to the interview: …” it needs to rest for a couple of years.”… = piece of crap that needs time to being erased of people’s mind…

  6. Predators was fatally flawed in its execution. The trailers and posters for the movie were made up entirely by images of the Pred. But the movie itself kept the Predators as a “mystery” for the first half. You can’t hide a creature in the shadows if I can buy an action figure of it at Wal-Mart. It just doesn’t work. Plus, the characterizations were beyond thin, Topher Grace was painfully miscast and worst of all, there was no third act.

They should have played off of real world conflict to establish the characters and shade them. One guy could be a Blackwater Merc. Another guy could be a member of an African “liberation” army. ect. ect. Make them violently different in their home politics so that you have a baseline of tension before you can trust that they’ll work together. This could work without even adding more than 3 or 4 minutes of dialogue total.

Or better yet, you could just assume that the audience knows what a Predator is and spend the first 45 minutes dealing with the characters, occasionally interrupted by a Predator Dog or whatever. Treat it a bit like a zombie movie, avoiding multiple scenes of the group walking up to a new member, yelling about not knowing where they are and then pulling their guns. I think Predators had 5 of those scenes.

It might be a step too far, the film could have done something like make Brody and the lead female Israeli and Palestinian. You already have Brody, a very Jewish looking man, as your lead and a woman who we are told is Mossad as the love interest. That’s pretty unusual. When was the last time you saw a straight up action flick with two Jewish leads playing Jewish characters?

Anyway, you wouldn’t have to be didactic about it. Just set up that they are on different sides in the real world, this would give some poignancy to the pseudo-romance and add a sense of danger to the human element that echos the aliens.

Of course these ideas are a bit broad and a bit on the nose, but I’m just trying to spitball a way to add some level of characterization that wouldn’t slow down the pacing.

  7. Predators was the biggest most useless piece of shit of a movie possibly every created.
Rodriguez is simply useless. It just went from one bad set up to another.
Words cannot explain how bad it was.
I’m in total agreement the AVP movies where a million times better and they were shit, which means that Predators was a million times worse than a piece of shit.
Predator 2 fucking rocked by the way…

  8. Why don’t they just set a PREDATOR movie in a different era? Using the denoument of Predator 2 as a sort of springboard they could have something like “PREDATOR: 1715″, or Predator set in Aztec times ( Apocaplyto-esque ), or London 1888 ( Jack The Ripper era ) or set in ancient Japan, etc.etc.

There really is a world of possibilities, but the makes seem unwilling to think outside the box and just set it in the same tired setting…

  9. Here’s an idea: How about have like 15 minutes of straight screen time on nothing but what the predators are doing… The real star of these movies now is the Predator.

Lets see the predators doing stuff like planning an assault, making weapons, etc.

Also, if “Predators” was trying to pay homage to the first film, what was up with the stupid “superior new predator” plot device. That was stupid and ruined the whole movie.

For me, Predators was a huge disappointment.

  10. just because Predators was better than the avp movies does not meant it was good. Considering the freedom they had and talent involved the movie was a disappointment.

  11. Predators didn’t suck….but Danny Trejo was proper nonsense!

They should’ve made him fight a Predator with a darn Machete….but alas they made him go out like a punk!

    Anyhow bring back Billie!

  12. I thought about this the other day as a matter of fact. I was sitting where I usually sit and a thought dawned upon me that a Predator on his home world opens his door and meets a attacker. The attacker surprises the predator so bad he opens his eyes real wide, and turns and runs away into the bush. He runs so fast and he goes to where he might get help, in the predator city. Then as he runs he see’s a neighbour and the beast chasing him attacks his neighbour and so he escapes it but his neighbour is eaten or something bad.

It was a monster like the one in the animated movie “Spirited away”. That mumbling mosnster that invades the bath house and eats the people up. It grows as it chases the predator and when it’s shot it puffs up so it looks real freaky and the blasts barely affect it. And it can move fast enough the predator barely outran it.

Anyway, the main plot point is the predator got punked and ran and then what happens…

  13. And I liked Predators, but not the aliens vs predators movies, and the predators 2 was fun but now it’s really outdated, and predator 1 was ok too but it’s really slow compared to todays action movies so..
I like predators the best because the characters seem cool even though there is no real predator hunting till the last few minutes.

  14. Predators was a pile of sh*t. John Davis knows it. Weintraub is clueless. Adrien Brody once again proved he’s the most boring actor on the planet. While the director proved he doesn’t know sh*t about telling a story (notice he’s got no films on the horizon). And, Rodriguez proved he should stick to directing (‘grown-up’ films, his kid films are god-awful). Wasted use of cast (Really?! You’re gonna kill off Danny Trejo in the first 5 minutes?! By far, the most interesting actor in the cast. And, you’re gonna kill him off and leave us the Adrien Bland. Really?!). Predators was worse than AVP2. And, AVP2 was unwatchable.

  15. Predator 1 was great, they shouldn’t had made Predator 2 without Schwarzenegger and Predators shouldn’t had been made i did not like the movie. AVP was good but AVP: Requiem Sucked needed Paul W.S. Anderson to Direct it.

  16. PREDATORS was the biggest insult to the Predator franchise and in my opinion the entire concept, firstly comparing the cast with that of the original and then suggesting that they are better than them is just fucking stupid, not only that you change the Stan Winston Predator with the pathetic “super predator”, i mean why call them the “Super” Predators when they have no superiority in any sense over the original Predator played by Kevin Peter Hall, they are smaller, don’t use proper Predatory tactics I.E. correct use of the trees, and they die in the gayest ways possible (Claymore? a light cut from the shittiest sword fight ever and getting dismembered by a gay looking blunt alien axe) why did they feel the need to bring in the old Predator only to have it killed by the poorly designed and thought out “super predator”? not only that why have such a small cast against such a small group of Predators in the first place, it just erases any sense of the Predators being bad ass’s.

They should of let the Predator Franchise die with the AVP films, or at least wait for a decent director and script to come along like the Alien prequel; Prometheus, Directed by Ridley Scott who did the original Alien.

  17. Personally, the avp series fell straight into the crapper like most vs. movies do when they pit two popular franchises against each other. And although predator 2 was not as good as predator, it became a cult hit with fans over time. As a kid I almost sh*t my pants seeing the xenomorph skull in the Predators’ trophy room. And they screwed it all up with the avp series, making the first one barely watchable and Requiem just a pointless unwatchable sci-fi special FX gorefest. Predators was clearly not as good as the original, but never the less, it did have more depth in terms of character and plot than avp and paid it’s homage to Predator while still having it’s own storyline. It’s not so terrible to think that the Predator race had it’s own planetary domestic disputes and therefore some evolved into a more animalistic hunting machine that doesn’t follow the codes of honour the original predators still have. The survivor of avp was shown that respect by the lead predator in avp because she saved his ass and he honoured it. That’s the only part I liked in that awful movie. In Predators, Brodys’ character does the same in a different, fresher way. The bottom line is that nothing will be as good as the original movie. But to say Predators was a terrible movie isnt really true when you compare it to avp. It had it’s bad points, but in terms of scope it just had more. I felt the same about Predator 2. Only thing missing from that movie was Mel Gibson. Lmao

  18. I have been exploring for a little for any high-quality articles or weblog posts in this kind of space . Exploring in Yahoo I eventually stumbled upon this site. Reading this info So i am happy to exhibit that I’ve a very just right uncanny feeling I found out exactly what I needed. I so much without a doubt will make sure to do not disregard this site and provides it a glance on a constant basis.

  19. If there is a sequel will it be with the two suriving characters from the Predators movie or will it be a completely different set of ppl? Thats what i want to know

  20. The first one was awesome. 2nd one stunk to high heaven, AvP was dumb, and Predators was just okay. It didn’t do well, so they want to reboot in a few years just like everything else these days.

    • I would like to hear a more intelligent response for once one why the 2nd “stunk.” The first two were solid. They had that grungy, old school action with far more attention to script and acting. The actors had character. The Predator was lurking in the shadows and you rarely got but a glimpse which is why the first two were more terrifying especially when I was a young kid. The ones that followed just turned them into spotlight-hogging eye candy. It totally desensitized us to their dark and scary nature. The stylization of the costumes turned them from convincing alien species to something that would be an advanced Halloween costume, so cheesy and obviously a man wearing a suite. Predators had too many well known actors so all you see is their previous character out of place in this alien world. When will they learn…

  21. Let’s be serious, there will never be another Predator 1, even with Arnold involved, and let’s be serious, Arnold is no longer 37… it would be just as hard seeing him do Predator now as it was trying to watch Harrison Ford do a 4th Indiana Jones.. To add to that, scripts just don’t build on the depth of characters anymore like they did in the 80′s and to a lesser extent in the 90′s.. it’s all flash and CGI these days. The only way to get around that is to hire the original writers, and give the freakin movie back to John McTiernan, that is what will make another good Predator.

  22. Just like all movies, some people loved it and some people hated it.I thought it was the best in the franchise since the original. The movie had a semi small budget(40mil)and was made in a very short time frame, despite all that it turned out great and gave us a new world with new creatures to enjoy!Give the pre/sequel a 120 million dollar budget,Rodriguez directing, plenty of time to make it,and maybee a female predator to boot, and you have an epic new predator film for the next era of fans to enjoy! P.S @ the end of the credits in Predators they should of had Arnold falling and screaming, then hit the ground because his shoot didnt deploy ;)

  23. I think Predators wasn’t really bad, but it could have been way better, at least story and character wise. When Danny Trejo died so soon in the movie i was just baffled… Was he just there to pull some people to the cinema? At that time i began to worry about the quality of the rest of the movie. Wait… My first hint of poor quality was Brody’s silent tough guy attitude, who arrogantly takes up leadership position like a total moron. No special forces [or whatever] member would act like that unless it’s a complete psycho loner. But then again he wasn’t really a loner at the start, trying to band together to find out things all comrade like, even though he asked about their stories without telling them his [like a true leader right?]
Anyway i hadn’t read up about the movie when watched it so at first i thought it was going to be a sequel of avp, with preds being hunted by predaliens and the preds “calling” humans to aid them. You know they honored a human female at the end of avp right? So story wise it could fit.
But noooooo, it had to be some kind of super predator… I truly never really got what was going on and at the end i was like wtf was all this about? A Predator cast dispute or something? Or were they using gladiator type predators whom they trained to hunt at?
Sigh… At least it watched better than avp and avpr.

I think avp missed a good story and actor quality but at least the monsters looked great.
avpr was such crap that i skipped through most scenes with humans in it…

  24. The way the plots are spiraling downwards into absolute shit it wouldn’t surprise me if they came up with a plot that includes Jason with the newly mutated predator vs Freddie and the original inferior predator. They are still going to make some money off the teenage audience.

  25. Some people here are just a little too cynical. In my opinion “Predators” was a small step in the right direction after the bloody diaper I like to call “AVP” and “AVPR”…

The simple fact that most people don’t realize is that after Keven Peter Hall passed on (The original guy in the predator suit for one and two) the franchise essentially died with him. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a fit seven foot tall man with at least some martial arts training and extensive experience being in monster costumes? Its like finding a three ounce diamond in your back yard.

Without Keven the monsters in these movies stopped being calculating creatures with a strong body language. In “Predator” the few scenes that you saw the monster you could almost get an idea of what might being going on in its head. You could see frustration, anger, and even hate in his body posture. With nothing but bone head pro football and basket ball players in these suits it looks like just that. Some bonehead in a suit. They just don’t look alive, they look like you can just peel all the makeup and rubber off and find Ian White under it.

I digress, the concept pretty good. The actors were great and I loved Adrian Brody, the locations and scenery were perfect, the planet looked very alien and it made you wonder of the creatures had also been harvesting samples of the plant life from other worlds to plant here. On the flip side though this could have been better, I would really like to see more ACTUAL acting from the guys in costume.

  26. PREDATOR … AMAZING
    PREDATOR 2 … GOOD

    AVP …. OKish
    Wont mention the others

    PREDATORS … ABISMAL

Where to start, 1. The director tried acting like he cared about the movie. There was no real reinvention or creation into new ideas for a movie like ridley is doing with prometheus, rodrigues just spat out another pointless film. way tol many boring and B-list actors, i mean machete… That guys been in way to many z-list movies to be took seriously for a predator roll. I didntncare when any characters died, in predator 1 if sumbody died, u felt hurt and terrified… I couldnt wait for all these doenuts to die.

Let me spitball, lets do a predator film with completely no humans, maybe hunting other species, have the hole film on predator home land, make the film in predator language with subtitles, all the politics and rituals on there planet, go deep into there history.

We need a REAL director… A REAL budget… A REAL passion… a REAL story and a REAL break from this shit.

Nothing worked whatsoever with predators, i left the cinema like… Ermmm well that was shit wasnt it.

  27. –SORRY MY POST IS A YEAR LATER AFTER THIS INTERVIEW–

First off, I work in a “related field” so to speak w/ screenwriters. There were actually several “think tank” writers at the local comic convention here in San Diego (where i live and work) and they had great ideas for Predators’ sequel, i thought.

Oddly enough, you guys apparently don’t know what to like/dislike, you just get angry if “Robert Rodriguez” directed it, or if “Machete” dies etc etc…ok, i get it. Enough crying, time to move on. Past is past.

Point is, there are PLENTY of fresh ideas going around. SOME of you are correct about the producers being the “bad guys”, so to speak, by not “caring” about the franchise/series. BUT, on the other hand, they aren’t mindless machines..they are just feeding their families, and unfortunately arent very creative in doing so. If you want a better movie, GO WRITE IT…its not hard to get your ideas heard in the internet age, kiddies. I PROMISE.

ANYWAYYYYY….I think the best idea thus far was what one of you tossed out. @SPOCK JENKINS, you had a great idea i think….

    Here’s why:
To place the PREDATOR in possibly a diff historical setting would be plenty fresh to me. For instance, your thoughts on having him be in Shogunate-era/ancient feudal JAPAN would be amazing. Because, coincidentally, there actually were some people involved w/ P1 and 2 that told KPH to act/study Samurai & martial arts motions for his role as Predator.

And oddly enough, the DARK HORSE Comics & amazing novelizations have followed this brilliance in my humble opinion. Author Stephen Perry had a great take on the original Aliens Vs Pred concept, actually, and had they followed it (the story of Ms. Noguchi on the Weyland/Yotani colony fighting WITH predators) would’ve been very fresh…plus it would’ve incorporated the honorable-warrior ideal that so many fans like myself would’ve liked to have seen….
In fact, if the writers would just go back, in my humble opinion, to the Dark Horse novels and comics (i.e PREDATORS: Concrete Jungle etc) that i enjoyed as a young teenager, they would have enough fresh material to last six films and keep the characters AND the actors who play them VERY interesting.

If you need to “reboot” a franchise, take Predators and make the next film (w/ that same neat tribute musical score from the first film) and put it in another time or another world w/great actors. But as far as the story, there are so many great ones already in print and there are so many possibilities in their universe (time travel?), but again….its depending on budget and studio patience. They need to keep a lid on the creatures (like many of you said) and keep them in the shadows and make them terrify us using NEW settings and NEW tech.

Personally tho, I REALLY REALLY liked the idea of feudal Japan or maybe some other time period. Oh, and PREDATORS wasn’t that bad guys…give it up. It wasn’t P1 or 2 (which were both great), but it is definitely a fitting “trilogy” piece to be put in with those first two…everything after 2 was no bueno but at least Rodriguez gave it a good ol college try. I’ve seen worse, thats for sure. AVP1 was by far the worst of ALL the films. The dialogue was so bad, i left the movie. At least PREDATORS’ dialogue was quasi-entertaining (if only to laugh). Of course, Brody could’ve ditched the Dark Knight gravel voice and could’ve been the silent type…I mean, you are plenty bad ass enough with a god damn AA-12 full auto shotgun w/HE rounds exploding everywhere that you don’t need the tough guy voice.
Anyways, to sum up, the last one was decent, but now they do need fresh ideas…my thought is to just simply follow the novels/DH comics versions, imo.

  28. i think the feudal japan concept would be amazing. it would just fit with the predators’ mindset/style of fighting and would give everyone equal ground.

Can you imagine? Predators land in the middle of a battle between ninja and samurai troops (as they usually do enjoy the hunt during a conflict) and we follow their hunt.

I think a rogue assassin could befriend a predator, just like they tried doing in AVP (but failed), and the predator could turn against its fellow hunters (maybe because they start killing too many unarmed prey, or do something dishonorable) and together we see a whole new battle emerge. No guns, lasers, plasma cannons, etc.
    Just steel…

  29. Dark Horse’s take on the novels like Stephen perrys CONCRETE JUNGLE and his absolutely breathtakingly brilliant version of aliens vs predators set in 2520 ad on a weyland/yutani colony in space was amazing…w/ that Ms Noguchi fighting as a ninja warrior alongside the predators against the aliens??? It was BRUTAL and totally fresh!

There are MORE than enough great ideas for this franchise…just look back to the 90′s with those older novels and you have a gazillion great settings and characters etc.
In fact, the whole idea of calling them “Yauja” was HIS!!! Yes, Stephen Perry, i think, created that whole idea. He even showed their homeworld, their mating patterns, hunting styles, etc. It was more than enough for a reboot, i think.

Anyone with me?? I mean, PREDATORS was actually a great film…screw all the hater purists/elitists types on this thread. Sure, it had cheesey dialogue (unfortunately, that is rodriguez’s only weakness). But at least it tried to honor the first one in one way or another (like that classic score!).
The first two will ALWAYS be the best, but the Rodriguez version was at least the best possible “third” film i’ve seen yet.

Anyhoo, the books/comics left NOTHING to be desired in terms of substance, character backstory (Dutch’s freakin brother! he kicked ass in the books). There was plenty of great ideas…We just didn’t look hard enough.

They need to reboot the franchise with either a diff historical setting (like feudal japan…god what a great concept! to put them with others like them in terms of honor/warrior society etc) OR they need to use the books/comics. That is what i think.

  30. I think the dark horse comics/novels versions were the best…easily.

CONCRETE JUNGLE and the original (i mean original) version of AVP (novel) was amazing.

it had all the backstory and great characters for sure….I mean, dutch’s brother totally owned!! Plus, the story of Ms Noguchi on the futuristic Weyland/yutani corp’s colony in space was the best idea yet. She ran as like a ninja assassin alongside a predator to fight against the aliens and the “dishonorable” other Yautja that hunted unarmed prey etc. That was a killer story, and more brilliant than any of the awful avp films.

But i am going off on a tangent…the bottom line is the next film needs to be either from the novels/comics OR it needs to follow that cool feudal japan idea i think. That would be PERFECT for the predators….that whole time period is brilliant as a setting for the next hunt…Samurai and ninjas vs Predators!

  31. The “Predators” movie cheapened everything that went before it, by making the classic predator species look so inferior and weak.

This poorly thought out “super predator” species should never have been introduced to the franchise. Why? Because it’s insulting to the last two decades of movies, comics and novels.

If there ever is a sequel, the story needs to show the classic predator tribe as the overall victor of the blood feud, and explain that the “supers” were not that super after all. Get rid of them.

  33. P1 & P2 were good, EVERYTHING after POO, Real POO!! If I had a cahance to direct a P3 this is how it would go!
1-Out in the dustiest desert in the world.
2-A purpose built base for catching Predator’s
3-Choppers Tanks Hummers and what ever else the army has just buzzing around every where making more dust.LOL.
4- A chopper flies in and pick’s up Arnie on a golf course in his Red polo shirt and khaki pants and gives him an offer he can’t refuse (To catch and kill predators)
And so on…etc To hot to sit and type anymore her in Australia.
BUT! 5-Good cast- e.g. The rock, Hugh jackman, Vin D, Bale, Just look around theres good tough guy actors out there!!

  34. Thanks for helping me to attain new suggestions about pcs. I also contain the belief that certain of the best ways to help keep your notebook computer in excellent condition has been a hard plastic-type case, and also shell, that matches over the top of your computer. These kind of protective gear are usually model specific since they are made to fit perfectly above the natural casing. You can buy them directly from owner, or through third party sources if they are readily available for your notebook computer, however don’t assume all laptop may have a cover on the market. Just as before, thanks for your recommendations.
