While fans have been clamoring to see a crossover between the Marvel TV shows and the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since Marvel’s Daredevil first hit Netflix, there have as yet been no indications that such a plan is coming to fruition anytime soon. However, there does exist video evidence of The Punisher and Spider-Man interacting together in the same scenes, albeit with a bit of a twist.
At the same time that Jon Bernthal was up for the role of The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2, young actor Tom Holland was also in the midst of the highly contentious race to land the role of Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War (and beyond). And as it turns out, at the time that both of these actors were auditioning, they were working on a film together.
Speaking with the NY Daily News, Bernthal revealed that during production of the period drama Pilgrimage in Ireland, he and Holland worked together on their Marvel audition tapes:
“We were making tapes from Ireland in the process of getting him cast in Spider-Man and then he and I made a tape for The Punisher… During this independent movie that we did in Ireland we were constantly making tapes for Marvel — just acting together.”
If that sounds like something you definitely want to see, you’re not alone. However, Bernthal says it’s a long-shot that they’ll see the light of day:
“These tapes definitely do exist, you can call Marvel and ask for it, but that’s like breaking into Fort Knox.”
Perhaps when Marvel puts together the big Phase Four Blu-ray box set, these audition tapes will surface as part of the special features? One can certainly hope. It remains to be seen if Bernthal might get his own spinoff Marvel series, but he’s already said he’s more than willing to star in one. As for Holland, he’s currently gearing up to shoot the new standalone Spider-Man reboot this summer before no doubt diving into the production for Avengers: Infinity War – Part I and Part II later this year.
