Jon Favreau Interviews Harrison Ford for COWBOYS & ALIENS

Jon Favreau is trying to reinvent the publicity machine.  He’s seen how it’s been done in the past and is clearly trying to come up with new ways to market his movies to fans.  With Cowboys & Aliens, it looks like he’s getting some leeway to control that publicity. At WonderCon, he pledged that only the folks in the room would get a sneak peek at the aliens and further images of the creatures wouldn’t be spoiled in the trailers, TV spots, and other press materials.  He’s also planning to hold the film’s world premiere at this year’s Comic-Con.

Now he’s foregoing the standard EPK (electronic press kit) with its boring, talking-head interviews by taking on the role of the interviewer and speaking candidly with his cast.  The result is far more entertaining as you can see from his first interview series with Harrison Ford.  The conversations are reminiscent of Favreau’s short-lived Showtime series Dinner for Five and nowadays if you can see video of Ford not acting grumpy, that video is worth your time.  Hit the jump to check out the first series of interviews.  Cowboys & Aliens opens July 29th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Cowboys & Aliens:

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents–townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors–all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Can we have interviews for all films like this? Instead of some charisma vacuum devoid of intelligence or personality from E! or whatever asking the same question we’ve heard the answer to 40 times already.

What fantastic clips! Looking forward to hopefully seeing the “whole” interview at some point.

    Welcome back, Harrison!

He’s so energetic and engaged! That’s so great to see again!

(I do hope, though, that the shambling, grumbling zombie that’s been impersonating Mr. Ford for the last 10 or 15 years has been put down. Those things are dangerous! Especially around our tender, tender brains!)

  • stringerbell

    every director should do this…brilliant

  • Solgazer

Those are fantastic! what a breath of fresh air. i always buy special editions for special features and they generally suck! Please, please, please put these on the blu-ray release of Cowboys Vs Aliens. Please!!

  • Shmojo Jojo

    Wow!

THAT is how you market a movie. I honestly had no desire to see Cowboys and Aliens until now.

Cheers to thinking outside the box.

    What a great interview

Great clips, Ford is Awesome as ever! But sadly, for me (for the most part) Favrou makes the classic mistake of most interviewers.. He butts in, and were left hanging for what was on the tip of Fords tongue. Talking over someone grinds my gears, but talking over Ford (who we rarely see interviewed is criminal.

Still, i like what they did, and i look forward to seeing the film. I like what they said about “one scary giant ant looks better than a million giant cgi ants.”
So many films these days show OTT visuals, that we can not fully see what were looking at. Transformers/van helsin/green lantern etc.. too cluttered, and too far removed from reality.

I hope they do make Indy %, to redeem the character. I’m sure in hinesight, they can push the right buttons next time and learn from mistakes.

(maybe collider can ask ford/spielberg/lucas if they are aware of what the fans didnt like?)

Luca$ ? He simply doesn’t care about anybody. He became senile since Episode VI.

Damn I miss those Dinner for Five shows…

  • tzaylor

now that was some good internet

    Great interview!
I agree though, they should not talk over each other, its annoying.
2 males, what can you expect.
Jon Favreau, you are a great director, but brevity is not your strongest suit.
That being said, cant wait to see the movie – should be a good one.

  • KLM

Other than Jon interrupting and talking over Harrison way too often in some spots, this was pretty much awesome – finally an interview with fun stories and candid moments, without the dry/over asked questions and bored, dispassionate answers.

Too bad this didn’t happen for all movies!

  • Elitist Prick

That was great. Even the stories that have been told many times over, like how Harrison Ford got cast as Han Solo because he was brought in to read lines during auditions, are made more entertaining since those stories are told between two people who actually enjoy each other’s company.
