Is the New Judd Apatow/Paul Feig Comedy Made for Jon Hamm and Melissa McCarthy?

     June 15, 2011

A little over a week ago, we reported that Universal was reuniting with producer Judd Apatow and director Paul Feig following on the heels of their hit comedy Bridesmaids. The only thing we knew about the project at that time was that Feig had worked on the material (described as an “unconventional love story”) for some time and that Universal loved the pitch (and the success of Bridesmaids) enough to acquire it. While we don’t have a ton of new details on the untitled project today, we do have a casting rumor that has peaked my interest. According to Deadline, the project is about a “guy who becomes obsessed with a woman” with the male and female leads being drawn up with Bridesmaids co-stars Jon Hamm and Melissa McCarthy in mind.  More after the jump.

Although the report is quick to point out that there are currently zero negotiations ongoing between the studio and the actors, I can’t help but hope there is some substance to its claims. I’ve longed for more work from McCarthy since seeing her turn alongside Ryan Reyonlds in writer/director John August’s The Nines. On top of that, if you ask me, she virtually owns every frame of Bridesmaids she appears in and seems primed for a starring role outside of her work on CBS’ Mike & Molly. As for Hamm, I think he was solid in both Bridesmaids and as host of SNL. As such, I’d like to see him take on more comedic work that allows him to lose that Don Draper scowl every now and then. Especially if said work takes place alongside McCarthy and within the framework of an Apatow/Feig romantic comedy. Again, here’s to hoping this rumor has legs.
