Rumor: Jon Hamm as Superman in THE MAN OF STEEL?

Here’s a rumor that you should take with a grain of salt.  According to TMT, Warner Bros. is “seriously considering” Jon Hamm (Mad Men) to star as Superman in their upcoming planned reboot, The Man of Steel.  Christopher Nolan will act as “godfather” for the film, with screenwriting duties going to Jonah Nolan and David Goyer; the film is set for a 2012 holiday season release.  Hit the jump to read my thoughts on Hamm  as Superman, along with what we know so far about the project.

superman_animated_series_tv_show_image_02I, personally, absolutely love the idea of Jon Hamm as Superman.  To me, it’s perfect casting.  He already looks like Bruce Timm’s (Superman: The Animated Series) Superman (pictured, right), and anyone who watches Mad Men knows that he is an amazing and very talented actor. Also, based on his SNL appearances, I’m sure Hamm can handle the comedy required to play Clark Kent.

Having said that, Hamm is currently 39 years old and will be 40 by the time the film starts production.  I don’t find this to be a problem, because I hope that Nolan doesn’t tell us Superman’s origin story again.  If Nolan and company make a Superman film where Superman is already an established character (and hero) in Metropolis, then I’m perfectly fine with an older Superman.

At the beginning of June, Nolan said that David Goyer had figured out a way to address the character of Superman in a modern context:

“It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”

Sadly, that quote is pretty much all we know about The Man of Steel for right now.  We still don’t even know who will be directing the film. A couple of months ago there was the very cool-sounding rumor (and I stress the word RUMOR) that the current line of DC Comics movies will lead to an eventual Justice League movie.  But that is still a pipe dream for right now.

Be sure to leave your comments below about what you think of Hamm as Superman.

    Best. Superhero. Casting. Ever.

    Ever.

The first time I saw him on Mad Men I thought to myself “This guy would make an awesome Superman.” He’s like the poster child of America.

    MAKE. IT. HAPP. EN.

  • aroddy

That’s true, he would make a great Superman, but 40yrs old?! maybe the earth-2 Superman. He could get by filming the 1st movie, but the inevitable sequels?? Remember Roger Moore in his last few Bond movies?

Why has making it a period piece set in 30s and 40s never been considered? Or has it been considered I wonder? Trying to shoehorn the boyscout attitude into modern society seems harder and less likely to succeed than going back to the original setting. Hamm is great, but I do think his age is a serious factor.

I think you’re spot on. It’s perfect casting and nobody needs to see the Superman origin story for the fiftieth time. It’s not like he is an old-looking 39 year-old guy, too.

  • Mec90sabres

This would be GREAT CASTING! Even though I personally would pefer to see him as BATMAN!

  • JT

He would make one badass Superman! But like aroddy said, he’s too old. What happens when the sequel comes? Don’t get me wrong, Hamm is one of those actors that can play almost any Superhero and Super-villain in the book. But in this case, I just can’t see it working out this time.

Perfect casting, and age isn’t a problem at all. Downey was 43 when the first Iron Man came out, and Hamm would barely be over 45 by the time the series wrapped.

I do wonder if he would take it, though. Given that he’s already going to run into Gandolfini-esque trouble getting typecast as one character, getting typecast as a second could make it a rough go. Then again, Superman is pretty far removed from Don Draper, so hey, more power to him.

Most contemporary movie-goers wouldn’t be able to accept such a film in my opinion. We already shunned the 40′s-50′s Donner-inspired Singer attempt, but I’m personally open to see such an undertaking. I agree. I think Hamm is one our great American actors, but I can’t get behind a Man of Steel in his 40′s unless this is Kingdom Come…

Don’t really watch Mad Men but I’ve seen it, and seen him in other things, like SNL. He’d be good.

I didn’t think Superman Returns was so horrible that they couldn’t have just made a better sequel.

As for the ‘origins’ story, NO NO NO! Saw it in “Superman” (1978), The Lois & Clark pilot, and the Smallville pilot. Don’t need to see it a 4th time. People know who Superman is. Maybe they could make this film in such a way that it could be seen to your average moviegoer as the followup to Superman Returns (even if it really isn’t) since Hamm is older.

Now if we can just get Keri Russell to play Lois Lane!

  • Gerry

If the superman movie is a hit (hope, hope) that probably means it will be a “trilogy” (like Nolan’s Batman movies) that means at least 7 to 8 years from beginning to end (that’s being generous, for all we know they can be shot back-to-back!). Hamm would start at 40 and end it at 47. The perfect age for a modern, mature, badass Superman movie! and 40′s is not that old! How old was Superman in Alex Ross’ “Kingdom Come” anyway? 60′s?

  • sense11

Its Superman not Superboy, i like this if its true.

  • WhosScruffyLookin?

Mostly because of money (period pieces are expensive), and there really isn’t much of a point to having a Superman film set in an earlier time period unless it was to set up future installments and spin-offs, a la Captain America. That’s how a studio would most likely feel about it.

  • WhosScruffyLookin?

Hamm is a perfect choice. I can see the age factor worrying studio execs, but I personally have no problem with it, especially considering the man doesn’t exactly look his age anyway, he looks to be rather young in The Town.

  • Guest

won’t happen. too old. also, what the fuck it wrong w/ people? clark is not fucking comedic. head your head out of richard donner’s ass and pick up a comic book.

  • jdstorm

Cant they just Cast Keanu Reeves and Sandra bullock already. those two have practically trained for these roles with every other movie they have ever done

Jon Hamm as Superman? But he’s already Lex Luthor:
    http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/f26c4046b0/lex-luthor-bailout-with-jon-hamm

All kidding aside, I thought Don Draper would make a good Superman since I first watched Mad Men.

  • Filmmartin

YES!!! Finally a Super-MAN! Get rid of the below-thirties. Give us an established, experienced superhero in an action adventure without the whole “begining”-theme. It’s been done…everywhere!

  • Marctg17

I have been watching Mad Men A LOT lately and have got to say that Jon Hamm is INDEED a truly remarkable actor! Not only has he won a Golden Globe for his performance in 2007 as Jon Draper, he’s been nominated multiple times for a Golden Globe each consecutive year thereafter!
I think he’d make a fantastic Superman! He’s got the acting ability, he’s got the physique (broad shoulders, fills in a suit well), he has already shown us he can master the 1960′s business/reporter-like attire. I have yet to see him do comedy, but I can already see him pulling off the quirky Clark Kent. Plus he does have a very strong looking super hero-ish type face.
Also, I think starting the reboot with Clark Kent already as the iconic Superman would do well!

  • harkonen

Although I was more in favor of him playing Captain America, I totally could buy him as Supes. Thing is Hamm seems a bit dark, but with Nolan at the helm this could be the realistic(?) take that we’ve been waiting decades for. For what it’s worth, probably not gonna happen anyway (fun to dream about though).

JOHN HAMM would be PERFECT as Superman!!!! And COURTNEY COX would be the PERFECT Lois Lane!!!! (to match his age) She is fiesty like Margot Kidder.

    Make it so!!!

  • Excpired

Knowing them he won’t be Superman, it would be cool if he was; he’d be the first Superman actor to actually know how to act!

He does have the look down, and his age is hardly noticeable, they could easily play him off as a early or mid-30′s guy.

  • Migz13

wow. I never knew this guy before but I think he looks the part!
If they decide to make the movie and stick to the 40′s-50′s setting then I
have no problem saying that they got their man!:D

p.s. but what I’m really waiting for is Batman 3:D

I know I’m in a minority on this but I wish Singer got his shot at a sequel. I watched returns the other day and I like it more and more as time goes on. I can understand peoples problem with it but I love Richard Donners world and Returns is a perfect addition to it imo… And very few other I know.

I am keen on a new take as well, and this would be good casting. I wonder what idea Goyer has in stall.

  • TheTrickster

    C´mon! That’s a no-brainer!

  • Jabiolson

Perfect, but too old. Matthew Bomer from White Collar would be my clear second choice.

Bomer could be good. I enjoy him on White Collar and having met him at Comic Con (even though I’m sure he ‘acted’ for crowd interaction a bit) he seems a genuinely nice guy

  • Andy247

The JLA rumour was officially rubbished by DC, saying there were no plans for any links between any of their franchises. This rumour appears to have been spawned out of a fanboy’s wet dream caused by the Nolan’s (not THOSE Nolan’s) involvement.

  • Firestar511

jon hammis a great actor by far but once again he is not right guy!! Tom Weilling is is superman he does on the tv show and wh shold let him do the movie. lets also think superman is supposed to make an apperance in green lantern and ton weiling and ryan ryenolds look the same age. I So this way you can have a young actor who knows the role inside and out. Come on hollywood get smart

  • terk

JON HAMM as superman = greatest casting ever.

  • Bobprodor

Too old? Too Old? I’m 39! I’m not too old. Dear God I’m old.
But seriously, we have to take back Pop Culture from the kids- they don’t even know what’s good- they’re too young! Old guys rule.
Oh yeah, he’s not too old, it’d be perfect.

  • Kevin

    Bring back Brandon

  • http://www.filmedequadrinhos.blogspot.com Inacio

The article from TMT was written in July….

  • Clyde

I hope if he is casted to play Superman/Clark Kent they will make Clark how he is in John Byrnes’ The Man of Steel series and not the dorky clark we’ve all seen over the years.

  • Jesup

    Brendan Frasier….

  • http://twitter.com/szadkowski Chris Szadkowski

Hamm is a brillant actor and I think he would have been perfect for the part 5-7 years ago. But now there he’d need too much makeup and cgi work on his face that would ruin the realism of the character. Plus at 40, to put on the weight to fill that roll is going to be next to impossible.

I didn’t mind Routh in Superman Returns, the script, the suit and the rest of the cast were the problems. I’d say stick with Routh, he’s aged and grown as an actor, and I felt he nailed the Clark Kent persona.

  • Anonymous

I think he’s perfect and I don’t care about the age. Perfect. Please do it!

  • Andyland35

Keri Russel would be awsome. I agree!

  • Nvppark

Get a Christopher Reeve look a like who can act. No one can ever top and him…
and no, despite what was written Brandon Routh was not a Reeve look a like and
didn’t come close to his acting skills.

  • Heychump

I know some hate him, but Welling is older and has the look and with the right director he could be one mean Superman. Gotta have the look, TW has it….

    • Hoyt

Give me a break, Not only has Tom Welling has stated before that he dislikes the charactor but his acting is down right terrible. Why would I want to see this talentless hack play Superman?

  • Ian

Although I think Hamm would make a good Clark and Superman, I’m still hoping for Tom Welling to play Superman in the next movie. He is one of the best actor’s to ever play Clark, looks the part, and would most likely make a great Superman. And with Smallville entering its final season he will have the availability to film the movie and any potential sequels. I can see why some people might argue that it would turn into Smallville: The Motion Picture, but it would be a shame if that would keep him from having the opportunity to do the movie.

    • Cam

The only thing that will keep Welling from having the opportunity to do the movie is his lack of acting skills!

      • http://411movienews.blogspot.com/ DempseySanders

how you can say Tom Welling cant act as Clark Kent/Superman is beyond me. He might not be the best option for a big screen option but certainly is not the worse. The guy has 10 years experience playing this character and playing it will. Everyones entitled to their opinion I guess, this is mine. And im not just saying it because Im a huge fan of smallville or something like that before anyone says it.

      • sense11

it will never happen, Christopher Nolan has a lot more class then that.

    • Cam

The only thing that will keep Welling from having the opportunity to do the movie is his lack of acting skills!

  • Zept

THIS IS OLD NEWS. NO SUPERMAN FOR HAMM

  • Zept

    … TOM WLLING NEITHER

  • Jack

It won’t be anyone that anyone wants…nolan will go in his own direction
    and surprise us all.
