“Napoleon Dynamite’s” Jon Heder will star in a big screen adaptation of the sci-fi novel “Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede”. Hit the jump for plot details (becauset the title didn’t give it all away). [Update: /Film has posted concept art for the film which you can see a smaller version of after the jump.]
Heder will play Oliver Vale, a man who was conceived at the instant that Buddy Holly died back in 1959, so in other words, it’s gonna be a period movie. When he becomes an adult, Vale’s life is changed when images of Buddy Holly, carrying a placard with Vale’s name and address, begin popping up on TV screens all across the globe. He subsequently becomes a target of aliens, the FCC, a cyborg dog and a renegade CIA agent though, interestingly, he manages to avoid Gary Busey.
Bradley Denton’s novel “Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede” won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Science Fiction – the third or fourth most respected sci-fi book award in the country – back in 1992.
Robert Rugan, the man justly unknown for delivering the woeful “Alice’s Misadventures in Wonderland”, will adapt Denton’s novel and direct the independent feature. It was all sounding so promising up until that last point.

I actually don’t hate Heder. Blades of Glory was much funnier than I would have expected. I’m going to hold wait for the trailer before I write it off.

So…are you making fun of the Campbell award or saying that it actually has some quality associated with it?
