While I’m obviously highly anticipating movies like Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises, one of the 2012 releases that I’m most excited for is 21 Jump Street. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the comedy, and it makes the feature directorial debut of Phil Lord and Chris Miller who directed the goofy and fantastic Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Steve said the movie was awesome and thinks it’s going to be a huge hit, and I’ve gotta say I concur. Apparently Columbia Pictures agrees as well, as Jonah Hill recently revealed to E! Online that they’re already at work on a sequel:
“We are writing the sequel now, we got [the greenlight] by the studio to start writing the sequel.”
Hit the jump for more on this in the works follow-up.
Hill is a producer on 21 Jump Street and also carries a “story by” credit on the film. The script was written by Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), but when breaking the news to E! Hill didn’t specify whether or not he’s writing the sequel as well. The trailers for the film look hilarious, and word of mouth from early press screenings and such have been extremely positive. While many seem skeptical of a 21 Jump Street movie, I think those that see the film opening weekend will leave wanting to tell all their friends about it.
This news doesn’t guarantee that we’ll ever see a sequel, but Columbia seems to have a lot of faith in the film’s commercial prospects. You can’t ever really start too early on these things, so it’s nice to hear that Hill and co. are already moving on an idea for a follow-up. I don’t really know what the sequel idea could entail (maybe they infiltrate a different high school in a different location this time?), but I’m not opposed to seeing more of the Hill/Channing Tatum team up.

Caught an early screening of this last week. my face literally hurt from laughing so much. definitely worth checking out once it releases
