We have more casting news on Tomas Alfredson’s upcoming adaptation of John le Carré Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  First up, Daily Mail [via The Playlist] is reporting that Jared Harris has had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with Sherlock Holmes 2 (where he’ll play Professor Moriarty).  However, the production has found an excellent replacement by casting great character actor Toby Jones (The Mist).  Jones is shaping up to have a great 2011 as he’s got motion-capture performances lined up for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.  He’s also costarring the exorcism flick The Rite with Anthony Hopkins, and he’s playing the villainous Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger.

In Tinker, Jones is set to play Percy Alleline, the head of “The Circus”, which is the spy division that’s the focus of the story.  Hit the jump for more on John Hurt, Stephen Graham, Roger Lloyd-Pack, David Dencik, and Kathy Burke joining the cast.  Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is currently filming and also stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch.

John Hurt will play Control, the former head of Circus and Alleline’s rival.  Burke, who won her the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1997 for Nil by Mouth, has focused more on theater acting in recent years, but will make her return to the screen by playing intelligence analyst Connie in the film.

Stephen Graham (who is doing a great job playing a young Al Capone on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) Roger Lloyd-Pack (Made in Dagenham), and David Dencik (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) are also on board, but there’s no word on what roles they’ll be playing.  However, it’s looking like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has a remarkably strong cast and is shaping up to be one of the must-see films of (hopefully) 2011.

Here’s the official synopsis of le Carré’s novel:

It is now beyond doubt that a mole, implanted decades ago by Moscow Centre, has burrowed his way into the highest echelons of British Intelligence. His treachery has already blown some of its most vital operations and its best networks. It is clear that the double agent is one of its own kind. But which one? George Smiley is assigned to identify him. And once identified, the traitor must be destroyed. [Amazon]
