Rumor: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Set to Play Batman in 2015′s JUSTICE LEAGUE, Maybe Even Earlier

Justice League is coming in 2015, which is sooner than you think.  Just last year, Zack Snyder said his Superman movie Man of Steel has nothing to do with Justice League, and Batman curator Christopher Nolan has no plans to get involved.  With DC’s two biggest superheroes on their own separate tracks, it was unclear just how and when Warner Bros. would start building up to Justice League over the next three years.  The answer may have come today in the form of the obvious: they already started.  Snyder now recognizes that the Superman you see in Man of Steel is almost certainly the same alien you will see in Justice League.  A new report suggests that you have already seen the new Batman, and he is Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  Details after the jump.

I apologize to those of you who are still waiting to see The Dark Knight Rises (specifically my brother), but we need to dive into TDKR spoilers here.

the-dark-knight-rises-joseph-gordon-levittThe last scene in the movie shows humble cop John Blake (Gordon-Levitt) inheriting the Batcave on a clear path to succeed Bruce Wayne as the new Batman now that the old Batman is “dead.”  I buy that Nolan wanted this moment as a thematic capper to his trilogy  with no particular interest in setting up the future of the franchise.  But how could WB pass up this opportunity to directly tie the next iteration of Batman to Nolan’s ultra-successful series?  So of course it makes sense that the studio would approach Gordon-Levitt about continuing the role after Dark Knight Rises, probably long before today.

The difference now is that, according to Motion/Captured, Gordon-Levitt is close to a deal that would lay out the long-term plan for JGL as Batman.  As per this August rumor, it’s very possible that they’ll wait until Justice League in 2015 to reintroduce Batman.  But M/C, after speaking to sources to put together the report, has reason to believe we will see Gordon-Levitt as Batman earlier than that.  From there, it’s all speculation, and I’m sure you can picture it.  There is only one major DC feature between now and Justice League, and it’s not that hard to shoot one of those post-credit scenes for Man of Steel where Superman gets a call on the Batphone from a mysterious figure who needs help against a powerful foe…

Too much heresay at this point, sadly.  Surely we will learn more concrete details on Justice League and the greater DC/WB partnership leading up to the June 2013 release of Man of Steel.

I hope it’s not true. As much as i liked JGL, Batman has to be Bruce Wayne.

    • Nate H

Agreed. I’m a big JGL fan, but Bruce Wayne is the only Batman. It would be a little weird since JGL is relatively small, but I’d be okay with him playing Bruce Wayne. (That would also make for an odd not-connection to Nolan’s trilogy, but weirder things have happened)

    • Senor

Im ok with JGL playing Batman…but he has to be BRUCE WAYNE. I could care less if in TDKR he was someone else. Two different movies, two different universes. If he\\\’s Bruce Wayne…Im all aboard. If he is John Blake. I am not happy with this in the slightest.

      • dad

How could he be Bruce Wayne when we know that he is not?

  • Leo

I don’t like the thought of WB trying to force this to happen. When Iron man was started, it was started with the intention of kick starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is not the case with Nola’s The Dark Knight Trilogy. I also doubt that Man of Steel was meant to be in a D.C. universe when everything started. i could see that being their intention with Green Lantern, but they screwed that up by having him turn helicopter into a racecar on a track.

2015 is just too soon to force a Justice League movie. Trying to copy the success of The Avengers is a mistake because Marvel did everything right for many years and built up to The Billion Dollar Avengers.

On a side note, I am glad the Nolan Trilogy is over. I enjoyed it and could look past the plot holes of the final movie, and I still consider it all to be a monumental achievement in film making. But it would be fun to see JGL tackle Batman. I would like to see him struggle to be the hero because he doesn’t have any of the training, experience, knowledge, or abilities that Bruce Wayne had. I think it would be an incredible story in Nolan told it, but I prefer the trilogy ending like it did, but it would be an amazing graphic novel in the same vein of the continued adventures of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8. Basically I want to know the story but I don’t want the film.

    MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!

I don’t know…it may not be that bad of an idea. Yeah, JGL is a little small to be Batman, but he is about the size of Batman Beyond and that could put a pretty cool spin on JL.

  • mike jevons

    Terrible idea. WOW. shocked.

Yeah Bruce Wayne should be Batman.

But if they go with this idea, its not hard for JGL to put on muscle…it is Hollywood after all and he has three years to train so he is already way ahead of the curve…put lifts in his shoes to make him look taller as well. After how they altered his appearance in Looper with him, I think anything is possible ;)

    • sense 11

he’s taller than Christian Bale, just saying

        No, JGL is 5’10″ to Bale’s 6′

        I stand corrected

  • Duder

My first thought is now they have to connect the universes, correct? However if that can be solved I see no problem with it as long as he plays a batman beyond/nightwing type batman- while they convince Christian Bale to come back or find a suitable bruce wayne batman. Could work who knows.

  • Mars

    Meh.

Just get on with Batman Beyond already.

  • will

NO. Leave Nolan’s trilogy alone. Give it the goddamn respect it deserves.

    • DAVE

      EXACTLY!

    • Pocketses

Taking it out back and shooting it dead after the brilliance that was Dark Knight, before Dark Knight Rises could destroy that legacy. This is an awful, awful idea. Begins was great, Dark Knight as well. Rises was just a joke show. A putrid villain with a laughable decision on his vocal performance. A tired, old and overused Mcguffin, and one that was riddled with plot holes (“It’d lose containment in somewhere around 5 months” to “we have an exact countdown timer on this reactor and everyone in the movie knows precisely when it will blow!” in no-time flat!) And on top of all of that, a great comic character of Tim Drake/Dick Grayson was destroyed by an utterly pointless and awful decision to be included in such a half-assed way in this film. And to NAME him Robin shows all of the subtlety of a jackhammer trying to put together a playschool set.

      • Sean

To be fair, the John “Robin” Blake decision was just a wink at the audience. If a “great comic character” was destroyed because of a line of dialogue identifying his name as “Robin,” perhaps your view of things is far too fragile.

  • Mr. Orange

While I love this idea(as long as they don’t make the movie in the vein of green lantern) and I’m a huge JGL fan, I can picture seeing this article tomorrow with “[UPDATED]: Nope. Not true. “

NO. NO. NO. I like Gordon-Levit in TDKR but no way in hell should he be in the Justice League movie. Either they’ll make him Bruce Wayne (which is stupid and confusing) or they keep him as John Blake (which would mean a JL movie without Bruce Wayne?). TDKR’s ending was perfect, this potential casting would ruin it. Find a new Bruce Wayne/Batman and start fresh.

    • faiz

that’s the most logical explanation for anyone…

the problem is they will have to devote a lot of time to create another reboot, not to mention their concern about its quality (Nolan’s trilogy will be hard to top, that’s for sure). With this plan they can have a double weapon to promote the movie, the big name of Justice league and name it as the league The Batman is in…

really, it’s gonna be laughable seeing JGL in Man of Steel…not to mention Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer have to change the script so that JGL will fit in it (which is gonna take a lot of time)..and the reshoot .

      • Steve

Batman doesn’t have to connect to any previous movies. He should show up in the JL movie as simply Batman. Then, after JL they can spin off his character into movies. No origin needed. We’ve seen the freakin’ origin story. We don’t need another origin story. Did I mention that an origin story isn’t necessary?

No f… way!Levitt belongs to Nolan’s trilogy and my opinion is that they should leave alone this trilogy.Besides it will be too unprofessional to make this casting choice since they don’t have a director(it better has to be soon and before 2013) and he was in TDKR.WB shouldn’t ruin the universe that they are trying to create, and as i mentioned you should hire a talented director first. Also the new Batman should have his classic characteristics and i don’t think that Levitt would be the perfect choice. They should work really hard to make JL a great movie and not just a box office success!

  • Sugreev2001

I’m a huge fan of JGL,but he’s too little and young to play Batman. He could play Nightwing or Robin like it was alluded in the movie.I’d be fine if they call him Robin in JL movie.

Yes, yes, yes he’s Robin at the end of TDKR. BUT Bruce Wayne leaves everything to John Blake at the end, and moves to Paris. Batman also repeatedly states that “Anyone can be Batman, it’s a symbol”. In a way, JGL Has to become Batman. His whole character was about trying to understand Batman. Many probably didn’t even get it when he says “Check under my birth name, Robin”, and do you really think anyone will remember/care in 2015? We’ve had 2 Supermen, 3 Hulks and 4 Batmans already, the world will continue to turn, my friends.
Batman’s supposed to be 6’2″-6’3″, Bale was 6′, JGL is 5’10″…so….so what?
And how do we know this movie will/won’t work? Did X-Men require an origin movie for each character before the team-up? Just because Marvel made singles before the team-up and it worked great doesn’t mean it’s the only way.
    Bring on the Darkseid invasion.

    • Sean

No he’s John Robin Blake at the end of TDKR. The distinguishing feature of the character Robin isn’t that they all have the middle name Robin.

    • dad

uh? That whole Robin thing at the end was for people who actually know who Robin is don’t you think? Those who got that were the majority of people who saw the film and made Nolan and Co that much richer – namely Batman fans. Also, probably a lot of people who were not Batman fans also got it since there have been so many Batman films now.

  • J.R.

Seriously, anyone here who support this idea, hasn’t seeing a JL Cartoon or read a comicbook!
I like the idea, but Batman is Batman a.k.a. Bruce Wayne probably if they want to continue Nolan movie I would have no problem but if you read the comics or seeing the cartoons you’ll see what I am trying to say here, is the personality of Bruce Wayne-Batman that makes the JL what it is today Interesting, we haven’t seeing that on the big screen.

    • sense 11

Those cartoons dont matter in the film world, sorry its the truth

      • J.R.

I am not saying that the cartoons are the way to go, but those cartoons and the comics are the way the Batman have being presented to us in the last two decade, having John Blake as Batman in a JL movie is like having Terry Mcguiness (Batman Beyond) in the JL we all grew watching and reading, so this is weird not that he docent deserve to show us that take but Clark Kent Superman Bruce Wayne Batman are the worlds Finest Superheroes and those incarnations deserve the chance to be in the big screen

  • Sean

This doesn’t sound real. No one wants to see a Justice League movie where John Blake is Batman. The character of Batman isn’t intriguing just because some person is dressed in a bat suit. Batman is interesting because Bruce Wayne is interesting. Part of what makes the Justice League interesting is watching the interactions between Clark Kent (with his small town values) and Bruce Wayne (with his beliefs crafted by tragedy).

I have nothing against the John Blake character, but if you’re going to make a high budget, high profile Justice League movie, it’s foolish to have anyone besides Bruce Wayne play Batman. And everyone knows that. So this seems like a really really bad rumor generated in light of what Zac Snyder said yesterday.

    • tinypony

I enjoy the Kent-Wayne tension as much as the next guy, but I also know that the comics have killed Superman and Spiderman, Superman’s now a blogger, there are several Green Lanterns and Flashes. So it doesn’t seem too much of a stretch to me.
This movie has bigger problems in making Wonder Woman work well, deciding on Aquaman and/or Hawkgirl. They also have to do the Martian Manhunter right if this isn’t to come out all weird.

      • Sean

Comic book movies aren’t made primarily for comic book fans, but for as broad of an audience as possible. The two big characters DC has had mainstream success with are Superman and Batman. And in the last 5 years, Batman has been the most successful of any single character. But once again, Batman isn’t successful because he’s a random guy in a bat suit. He’s successful because people are intrigued by Bruce Wayne.

The mainstream audience aren’t sitting around speculating about how they’re going to make Aquaman and Wonder Woman work. But if you told them that Batman is going to be John Blake, they’ll first ask, “Who” and when you explain he’s the guy from TDKR they won’t be happy.

  • Rafael Martinez

Oh no… He doesn’t look like Batman AT ALL! Batman’s supposed to be built and at least a little handsome… He’s a good actor but that’s it and as it’s been pointed out, he’s ROBIN!

    • Sean

Having the middle name Robin doesn’t make you the character Robin. That was just a wink at the audience.

Maybe they wan JGL to play Wayne/Batman without direct link to the Nolan films. Might sound confusing, but it pays respect to Nolan’s work while not being directly linked.

  • RMF

If you have kept up on the Batman mythology over the past few years, they actually killed off Bruce Wayne. And the original Robin (Dick Grayson) actually took over the Cape and Cowl in the DC series “Battle for the Cowl” which happened after “Final Crisis” I think JGL would be perfect for this roll. He is not nearly as intense as Bale but he can be (umm… Looper, and Brick anyone) and that would actually help people register that it is not Bruce Wayne under the mask. It is suppose to be someone else portraying the Bat. Which, prior to Flashpoint and the new 52, was a different Batman.

    • RMF

      Role… not roll

  • Chris Nolan is a hack

Chris Nolan is a fucking hack. See what you hipsters have wrought for not admitting Rises was a hokey pile of fetid shite. Now that WB thinks that people thought it was good (most agree it wasn’t) they’ll tie into Nolans “realistic” intepretation. Get ready for the grounded aquaman assclowns!

    • Sean

Chris Nolan is a hack is a troll

  • Xander

    Josh Holloway should play Batman

  • Andrew

JGL would make a poor Batman for a crossover film, heck even the Bale Batman would be out of place. To create a good foil for the super-powered members of the team you need the Batman character to bring his brilliant mind to the table, and the Batman as brilliant detective angle hasn’t been played out on the big screen since the the first Keaton film. Nolan makes a few nods to the fact that Bruce is intelligent, but never puts much focus on it, and he is outwitted by his villains repeatedly. The Cartoon Network series did a great job of keeping Bruce as the peripheral part-time member of the team who investigates the motives of the villains while Supes and crew meet them more head-on.
A former cop with no formal training would have a hard time earning a spot on the same team as Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Green Lantern. He’d be by far the weakest link. The only reason Bruce isn’t is because he’s the cleverest member of the team and understands criminals better than any of them.

  • Tony

Honestly, I think JGL is signing on to do future movies in The Justice League vein, but itll be as Robin. I think the story is wrong and WB wants JGL for his “starpower” and including Robin in JL makes alot of sense for them financially. JGL is an awesome actor, and could very well be the reason whoever they are planning to be batman comes back to help the Justice League. I cant imagine them having Batman and Superman getting along, and Robin will be the one to convince him. I dont think Bale comes back, but I dont have any problem with another actor playing Batman and wierdly I trust WB/DC will find the perfect one only because they CANNOT fuck this up. I think Superman is going to completely kickass and Justice League is going to be a better film than The Avengers. It wont make the same amount of money but it will be a superior movie.

    For the love!

The fanboys are going to hate. Its inevitable. Its appears to be part of our genetic make-up.

Let Warner & DC play some freakin’ jazz here people!

I personally like the idea that they want to take a more organic route and tie the existing threads together from what they currently have in front of them (Nolen’s trilogy, Snyder’s ‘Man ‘o’ Steel’, and possibly even Ryan Reynold’s ‘Green Lantern’, which I still don’t think was as horrible as most were, and are still, trying to make it out to be).

The comic book world has been doing this very thing for YEARS! In fact: convoluted plots, re-booted beginnings, and creative license are the very building blocks of comic book lore and mythology.

For 16 year old, pimply faced fan boys to cry foul rings ABSOLUTELY hollow! Do your home work you simpletons! Comic book franchises have been doing this same sort of thing for years to keep readers engaged and to sell their titles.

In the early 90′s DC freakin’ killed off Superman and reincarnated him into 4 different iterations who each had their own title for year!

To have JGL’s ‘John Blake’ don the Crusader’s Cape is perfectly in line with the type of story telling and yarn spinning that has been the bread and butter of DC comics since its inception.

To decry this loudly will only hinder the evolution of the very mythology that you claim to love so dearly in the first place.

    Grow up.

    Love,

    A fellow fanboy

  • dad

That guy is Robin and that’s that. He is not Batman. Bruce Wayne is and always will be. I hate to say this, but it’s time for a a new trilogy. Leave Nolan’s where it is.

  • Afilmguy

I think a lot of commenters here are kind of making big assumptions and forgetting a couple things. If JGL becomes the next Batman it does not mean he must be John Blake. It’s a definite possibility, I agree, and that although Nolan intended it purely for storytelling purposes, how could Warner Bros. resist the opportunity and wide open door? Anyways, a lot of people are forgetting that just because the actor might be the next Batman, doesn’t mean his previous character is. There’s three possibilities: JGL is John Blake starting his adventures as Batman, JGL is a new Bruce Wayne, and lastly, also the least likely and absolute minimal possibility, JGL may just be a whole other character being the Batman (for example: he could just be another take on a Robin (Dick Grayson mostly) and take on the cowl or perhaps Damien Wayne (or maybe Damien as Bane’s son???)). In other considerations there are two big challenges this idea puts forth: 1) if JGL is continuing as John Blake as Batman, then it may possibly put a whole new spin on the view we have on Nolan’s realism in the trilogy and how it is affected by the expanded universe and fantasy quality, and 2) With the Superman apparently becoming directly part of JL, it will always bring up the question of “What could the Superman story have been had it not been tied with the Justice League?” Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  • Ugh

    Terrible idea.

The problem is Nolan made it very clear his Batman trilogy took place in a very realsitic setting (well… as close as you can get in a Batman film). Suddenly introducing powerful Alien Superbeings, Martians, Amazonians, Flashes, and Green Lanterns into the very real word established in the three Dark Knight films creates a dissonance. All of a sudden it means – Hey, if Bane really did take over Gotham and it was so bad, couldn’t Superman have just flown in and saved the day? A nuke can’t be that bad for him.”

The Justice League movie, as Avengers money hungry it sounds, should not have ANY connection to the Nolanverse whatsoever.

Nolan set up a very particular universe for his Bat trilogy. There is no way in hell that Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman as they will appear in a JL movie exist in that same universe. WB can say they do and they can cast JGL as Batman to tie them together, but creatively it’s not going to “sing.” It pretty much assumes that everyone will just forget the rules of the Nolan universe going forward. That’s ok but for world building it’s sloppy.
