Joss Whedon Says James Gunn’s Take on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is “Very Twisted”

     September 10, 2012

When Marvel announced their slate of upcoming films at Comic-Con this summer, fans were incredibly excited about the line-up for Phase Two.  That said, the prospect of a Guardians of the Galaxy movie was a tad questionable.  The feature film adaptation is ambitious for a number of reasons, but the fact that it takes place in outer space and features a team of wildly different heroes that includes a sentient tree and a talking raccoon provides an incredibly difficult challenge for whatever filmmaker takes it on.  Luckily, Marvel chose Super and Slither writer/director James Gunn to helm the adaptation.

Gunn is an inspired choice to bring Guardians of the Galaxy to life, and recently The Avengers director and Marvel “godfather” Joss Whedon talked a bit about his own trepidation with the property and subsequent relief when hearing that Gunn was signing on.  Hit the jump to see what Whedon had to say about Gunn’s take on the material.

james-gunn-guardians-of-the-galaxyAs everyone well knows, Whedon recently signed a deal with Marvel to not only write and direct The Avengers 2 but to also creatively consult on the studio’s other films in the pipeline.  The director talked with MTV about his initial reaction to Marvel’s plans for a Guardians of the Galaxy film and how he felt about the hiring of Gunn:

“James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, ‘Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].’ And then they said, ‘Well, we’re thinking about using James Gunn.’ And I said, ‘Oh, then no, you’re fine.’ He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote The Specials. People don’t understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed] Super.”

Whedon added that Gunn has “barely started” on the script, but he already has a solid take on the material that’s sure to impress:

“He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!”

To all those worried about Marvel venturing into self-parody territory with Guardians of the Galaxy, I think it’s safe to say the property is in great hands with Gunn.  As development progresses, hopefully we hear more about the project soon.  Gunn and Marvel are surely thinking about casting at this stage, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of cast they put together to make up the team. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to hit theaters on August 1st, 2014.

Couldn’t be in better hands. Super was raucous!

James Gunn, while at first I was a bit skeptical, seems like an inspired pick. From the snippets of the interview, it seems like Gunn has conceived a way to ground the movie in the MCU, make it accessible to a wide audience, and still have fun with the characters. Keep up the good work Marvel. As a side note: I really hope that the rumors of Viggo Mortensen as Dr. Strange appearing in Thor: The Dark World, and a cameo from Hank Pym/Ant Man in Iron Man 3 ring true.

  • bjemmi

Super was awesome in a different sort of way, and I have no doubt Gunn will deliver, given the amount of creative talent he has behind him

  • Strong Enough

does it matter anyway? we all know its going to be a mediocre film with an average score of 79 on RT that doesn’t impress nor fail. thats how all marvel films are

    • slick1010

Really cause last I checked the avengers was at like 94%…..stupid troll go check ur Dick for particles of Nolan’s ass

      • Angel of Death

And Strong Enough, what was the RT score of Dark Knight Rises again? What’s that? 87%? That’s lower than 94% right? Oh it IS? That’s hilarious!

        SUCK IT TROLL!

      • Nick

Saying Marvel movies are just okay movies automatically makes you a Nolan fan? Geez, quit sucking up to Joss you biased idiot. Go check out metacritic if you want an accurate score based on the actual ratings critics give, where Avengers is still mediocre. Deal with it.

      • Dexter

Nick spoke like a true Nolan dick sucker.

Nolanoids are an interesting bunch: before TDKR’s reviews came out, they’re quick to name Rottentomatoes as a reliable source…now it’s Metacritic.

LOL! You guys are f*cking transparent.

      • Strong Enough

wow you marvelltes are a crazy bunch. who the f*ck brought up Batman? why is it that everytime someone bad mouths a marvel film you losers go up in flames and trash Nolan? who the hell brought up Nolan?

and you say Nick is a Nolan d*ck sucker? oh the irony….lmao

      • Dexter

Uh-oh!!! Transparent and angry. Very angry. Whatever, bitch…you’re the resident troll on ANY Marvel related post.

Although I think it’s really cute (and gay*) that you’re defending each other’s Nolan-dick-sucking “honour” :).

*Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

      • Strong Enough

you are totally obsessed with dicks aren’t you? lmao

speaking of dicks take marvel’s out ya mouth while your at it :)

      • Dexter

Not as much as you love Nolan’s :D.

      • Strong Enough

I never mentioned Nolan. only you did :)

did you take out marvel’s dick yet?

      • Dexter

LOL! The Little Princess of Darkness doesn’t give up.

Hmmmm…do you really think you’re fooling anyone? The fact you enjoy Nolan’s man juice on a daily basis goes without saying for anyone who has ever visited Collider — not a single poster takes you seriously anymore. However, who am I to doubt such strong (ha!), undying, loyal love?

        Plus, you amuse me :D.

P.S.: Marvel is a comic/movie company. It does not, it can’t have a dick. But since you’re unable to specify said dick, I’ll assume it belongs to Joss Whedon. Eh…could be worse. It could be the one that has been firmly placed in your ass (later mouth) a.k.a. Nolan’s.

      • Strong Enough

I’m glad i have fans that know me so much on here. but you seriously think i give a sh*t what you think of me you freaking crazy ass dick obsessed marvellete? lmaoo

and the fact that you admitted you do have Whedon’s dick in your mouth is hilarious :)

      • Dexter

Oh yes, you really don’t give a sh*t. I mean, that’s why you have NOT replied to every single one of my posts (including the first one, that wasn’t even directed at you), right? ROTFL!!! Dear God, I’m so glad I found this thread.

About dicks (not you, I mean the ones you like to suck)…I was actually trying to help you insult me properly. It’s already annoying how poor your grammar and spelling are, but not even an insult you can get right? So, instead of Marvel’s dick, say at least “somebody from Marvel’s dick”. Get it?

But what I love the most is the fact that I don’t give a flying f*ck about comic books yet you assumed I was a Marvel fan…simply because I showed my dislike for Nolan. Are you sure you’re not the one obsessed with Marvel? And how can you f*cking eat with Nolan’s dick so deeply LODGED in your throat? Honest question.

P.S.: I’m going to bookmark this post. I can barely wait for your “amazing” comeback (lol!).

      • Strong Enough

How many times are you going to type “dicks?” LMAOO are you seriously talking to me about having dicks in mouths? You keep on going on about dicks in people’s throat’s. It’s weird. But when i replied I wasn’t even TALKING to you idiot! I was just talking to everyone who replied to me but somehow your whedon radar went off and decided to wage a war of comments in Whedon’s honor. I didn’t even mention Nolan but yet your bringing up past posts that i written like some creepy stalker and trying to use it against me like I give a sh*t. But yet here you are with nothing else to say but the same sh*t over and over again! I wonder what else your going to come up with? This is so fun! Ama book mark it too. Let’s see who stops first. This can go on for months, years, decades! BWAWAWAWAWAWAWA!!!!!

But go ahead and type in some more “dicks” :)

  • ScaredForMovies

Did I just step into the player haters ball? This Marvel vs DC nonsense is hilarious.

  • Dexter

Yup…he’s still here. And yes, very lousy logic.

But I love you anger. I love that you either you try to play it “cool”, but sounds angrier every time you reply to me — and that makes me extremely happy :D. All the “LMAOs” and “BWAAHAHAHAHAs” in the world won’t be able to mask the fact you REALLY sound like you’re taking this sh*t seriously and care a great deal about this. Which is hilarious.

I love that you say I “say the same shit over and over again” but it’s you who basically repeats what I post, unsuccessfully trying to spin the logic in your favor.

And finally, I love that you said (and keep saying) you don’t give a sh*t to what I think, or to what I post about you YET you’re willing to be here, answering to every little thing I had pointed out (which means you read my posts carefully)…apparently, till the end of times.

I, at least, don’t pretend I don’t care. I do. I enjoy seeing your replies: I click on the post thinking “Does he still care so much as to say he doesn’t care at all?” And then I see how worked up you sound…that brings me joy, really. I wish there was a smiley that could demonstrate it perfectly, but the best here on Collider seems to be this one: :D.

It’s so involuntarily funny (for you)!

And just because you asked, and loves it so much, just for you I’m going to say it again: dicks, dicks, dicks.

    • Strong Enough

I really bring you so much joy don’t I? lmao are you jacking off to this?

I love how you analyze every one of my comments like the fan you are of my writing. How long did it take you to write that little comment? 15 minutes? 20 minutes?

and he said DICKS!!! yes!!! he said DICKS!!!! Though i would have preferred more than 3 spellings of the words dicks. This will just have to suffice for now :(

alright. that’s all i got. I’ll come back in like….. 3 days for the reply.

Anyone who actually thinks Marvel movies are superior to Nolan movies, doesn’t understand the art of filmmaking. Nolan’s movies address philosophical issues, have excellent character development, brilliant settings and cinematography. Marvel movies, the hero tells a few quippy jokes, and stuff gets blowed up real good. That’s not art.
