On Tuesday, we reported that Joss Whedon was in final negotiations to write and direct The Avengers.  Today, Pajiba reports that Whedon might also be re-writing the script for Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger.  The extent of Whedon’s polish on Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely’s script is unknown but since Whedon’s greatest strength is his dialogue, I’d wager that’s where we’ll see his thumbprint.

This news combined with his Avengers deal has me shocked that Whedon is so far into the Marvel Universe movies.  At this point, we possibly have Whedon directing Marvel Studios biggest film and writing two of its superhero scripts.  Hell, since Whedon wrote the must-read Astonishing X-Men, might as well give him the next X-Men movie.  At some point his fans will blow a fuse in their brains.  And then they’ll be all like, “Where’s Dr. Horrible 2?!?!”  Commence construction of the Whedon Cloner.

Hit the jump for a brief refresher on Captain America: The First Avenger.

captain_america_comic_book_art_01.jpgCaptain America: The First Avenger will be set during World War II.  Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) will play Captain America/Steve Rogers.  Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl) will play Captain America’s sidekick Bucky Barnes.  Yesterday, it was announced that Haylee Atwell (The Duchess) will play Captain America’s love interest Peggy Carter.  The film’s villain will be Red Skull and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) is still in negotiations for the part.

There was also yesterday’s rumor that Captain America along with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) would appear at the end of Iron Man 2.

Captain America: The First Avenger is slated to hit theaters on July 22, 2011.  The Avengers is slated to hit theaters on May 4, 2012.

He may do a great job but I think it's kind of crazy for Marvel to trust him with such an enormous project like The Avengers.

I'd much rather it be Favreau but we'll see.

“I'd much rather it be Favreau but we'll see.” — me too. he's the perfect guy for the job, if you ask me.

Captain America is the heart of the Avengers so it makes sense to have Whedon have some influence in the Cap movie too. On this whole Whedon is not right for the director chair. What did Favreau do before Iron man that made people believe he could handle the job? Elf, Swingers, Zanthura? Come on. He also already took himself out of the running for the job because of his busy schedule so he wasn't even an option. On a similar note. Who though Raimi was right for Spider-man or Jackson could handle Lord of the Rings, or a young director named George Lucas could direct the Space Epic Star Wars. Most likely, nobody but the director himself.
To be honest Whedon will have an easier job than most because the tone, special effects, casting, and design will all basically be done by the time Whedon starts work on Avengers because they will be developed for the other films. The actors will be comfortable with their roles and Whedon will know the strengths and weaknesses of their performances before even getting on set. In addition, its also not like Whedon will be working on this thing alone. Favreau is still a producer and Marvel studios will be heavily involved be involved. The key to Avengers is really the team dynamic and that is where the film could easily fall apart but that is exactly where Whedon is at his best. From Buffy to Serenity and his amazing comic work, Runaways and Astonishing X-men, Whedon has proven that he can handle a team and that is what Avengers needs.
