Judy Greer to Make Her Directorial Debut with ‘A Happening of Monumental Proportions’
Judy Greer has been putting steady and reliable work in for years. From appearing in cult-television shows like Arrested Development to the third highest-grossing film of all time in Jurassic World, she certainly seems capable of wearing many hats. And now she wants to try a new one out: director.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Greer is set to make her directorial debut with A Happening of Monumental Proportions. Beyond the interesting idea of Greer in the director’s chair, the film will star Allison Janney and freshly-minted Oscar-winner Common.
The film is described as a comedic drama set in a small school “that serves as a backdrop for an all-in-one-day tale of sex, lies and dead bodies.” Well, that description took a turn. Production will get under way in Los Angeles this coming January.
Beyond the director and actors, the script itself is highly touted. It was a semi-finalist for the Nicholl Fellowship, as well as a finalist for the Sundance Writer’s Lab. Even with this acclaim, however, the announcement does not mention a screenwriter. Regardless, it seems like an intriguing premise for all involved, especially as it takes place all in one day while fitting in sex, death, lies, and laughs!
Janney can seemingly do no wrong, as her recent success with the CBS comedy Mom proves. She will also be tackling drama in The Girl on the Train, which she is currently filming. As for this film, I can see her taking on the role of a teacher or principal with aplomb. As mentioned, Common is coming off winning an Academy-Award, and is involved in two highly-anticipated upcoming films in John Wick 2 and Suicide Squad. I am not as familiar with his performances, especially when it comes to comedy, but his involvement and recent credits just adds to my curiosity.
As for Greer, beyond her comedy chops, she has proven capable of tackling drama, with turns in films like The Descendants. Of course, directing is a whole other endeavor. So this should prove an interesting project to keep on your radar.
