Julia Roberts Joins THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES; Zac Efron and Robert De Niro Team for DRIVING DICK KELLY; LOUDER THAN BOMBS Cast Set for NYC Shoot

     September 4, 2014

Here’s a look at today’s latest casting news:

  • Julia Roberts will join Chiwetel Ejiofor and Gwyneth Paltrow in Billy Ray‘s The Secret in Their Eyes, a remake based on the 2009 Oscar-winning Argentinian thriller of the same name from director Juan José Campanella.
  • Zac Efron and Robert De Niro are attached to star in the adult comedy Driving Dick Kelly, previously known as Dirty Grandpa.
  • Joachim Trier’s Louder Than Bombs sets its cast, which includes Gabriel Byrne and Jesse Eisenberg, and starts shooting in New York City this week.

Hit the jump for more on each film.

robert de niro driving dick kellyFirst up from The Wrap is news that Roberts will join The Secret in Their Eyes in an interesting change-up of roles.  The original film featured two male leads and one female lead.  Enter Roberts, whose interest in the project persuaded Ray to tweak one of the characters, change the gender, and then rewrite the part for the Oscar-winner.  The original film followed an attorney who retires to write a book about a cold case and his own affection for one of his former superiors, all of which uproots old secrets.

The Wrap also reports that Efron and De Niro will take to the road in Driving Dick Kelly.  Dan Mazer directs from a John Phillips script which centers on a lewd, widowed Army veteran who cons his straight-laced grandson into taking him to Florida for spring break.  It’s such a weird pairing, but perhaps the combined cross-generational star power will make this one a surprise hit.  I won’t rule it out since Mazer’s got a strong track record writing comedies, albeit with Sacha Baron Cohen toplining those films.

Here’s the press release concerning full casting details on Louder Than Bombs:

New York, NY – September 4th, 2014 – It was announced today that production is set to begin this week in New York City on LOUDER THAN BOMBS, the English language debut from internationally acclaimed auteur Joachim Trier.

LOUDER THAN BOMBS will star Golden Globe winner Gabriel Byrne (“In Treatment,” MILLER’S CROSSING, THE USUAL SUSPECTS), Academy Award® nominee Jesse Eisenberg (THE SOCIAL NETWORK), and Isabelle Huppert (two-time Best Actress Cannes winner: in 1978 for VIOLETTE and 2001 for THE PIANO TEACHER).

The extraordinary ensemble cast is rounded out by the Academy Award® nominated actors Amy Ryan (GONE BABY GONE, BIRDMAN) and David Strathairn (GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK.) and newcomer Devin McKenzie Druid.

LOUDER THAN BOMBS centers around Gene (Byrne) and his two sons (Eisenberg and Druid), three years after the death of Gene’s wife (Huppert), an internationally celebrated photographer. As they return to the house all four lived in during the boys’ formative years, the three grapple with remarkably contrasting memories of this woman who influenced their lives so profoundly. In doing so, they must begin to negotiate how best to live together, and uncover the mystery that informed her life.

The script was co-written by Eskil Vogt, who recently directed festival favorite BLIND, and Trier.  The pair collaborated on Trier’s two previous, critically heralded features, OSLO, AUGUST 31ST and REPRISE.

Key below the line credits include Director of Photography Jakob Ihre (who shot both REPRISE and OSLO, AUGUST 31ST), Production Designer Molly Hughes and Casting Director Laura Rosenthal.

I have to imagine that Efron and De Niro were cast based on that picture from Neighbors alone.

I’m fine with Chiwetel and Roberts, but Paltrow’s involvement in this just kills my interest.

I think you are mistaking this website for a cheap gossip forum. Paltrow is an excellent actress.
