Following a somewhat unexpected (though not undeserved) Emmy nomination for her work in the ABC sitcom Modern Family, Julie Bowen has landed a pair of roles on a larger screen. The actress has joined the ever-growing cast of Horrible Bosses, which features Jenifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and Colin Farrell as the titular employers alongside Jason Bateman, Jamie Foxx, and Jason Sudeikis. Bowen will play Spacey’s wife in the film, directed by Seth Gordon (Four Christmases), who directed an episode of Modern Family this season. The script from television writer Jonathan M. Goldstein (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and television actor John Francis Daley (Freaks and Geeks!) centers on “three friends who decide to murder their overbearing bosses with disastrous results.”

Variety also reports that Bowen will play “a high-strung wedding planner with a long list of chores” in Jumping the Broom, in which two black families from very different backgrounds come together for a wedding at Martha’s Vineyard. The cast is toplined by Laz Alonso (Avatar), Angela Bassett (Notorious), and Paula Patton (Precious), with Mike Epps, Loretta Devine, and Romeo Miller in supporting roles. Salim Ali (Soul Food) is on tap to direct.
Though “wife” and “wedding planner” don’t immediately sound like the most progressive female roles in the world, it is undeniable that Modern Family has proven an excellent venue for Bowen’s work. The actress has been ubiquitous on the small screen over the last decade, both as a regular on Boston Legal and Ed, and in guest spots for Lost, Weeds, and Monk among other series.
