As we reported earlier this year, Sony Pictures is looking to remake their 1995 hit film, Jumanji. For those unfamiliar with the original Robin Williams flick, the story (based on a 1981 illustrated children’s book) focuses on two adults and a pair of siblings who must play through the eponymous magical board game, which keeps creating horrific jungle conditions in the real-world every time someone makes a new move or tries to cheat. According to Heat Vision, Sony has hired Stranger Than Fiction writer Zach Helm to pen the remake.
There are no details on how the remake will differ from the original, but Helm is a smart choice for the magical realism of Jumanji. In addition to Stranger Than Fiction, he also wrote and directed Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, and did a rewrite on the upcoming remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller. Here’s the trailer for Joe Johnston‘s Jumanji starring Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, and Kirsten Dunst:

I’m sorry, but Robin Williams can never be outdone. Just like the new Karate Kid, I will refuse to see this.
Funny thing is, the new Karate Kid was actually a pretty good movie.
Funny thing is, it was actually pretty terrible. Other than Jackie Chan that is.
1. Kung Fu is not the same as Karate.
2. Jaden Smith can’t carry a movie with his wooden acting.
why
I understand this. Jumanji is the sort of movie I may have revisited over the years were it not for the terribly dated CGI (to come on the heels of Jurassic Park, the animal effects were certainly not up to par with ILMs dinosaur efforts), and my hate for Robin Williams. If you’re going to remake, remake something that can be improved.
Not a ton of CGI in JP, and the CGI used isn’t much better than Jumanji, so no real comparison. I wished ILM and animatronics were used more often after JP.
Anyways poor CGI is a piss reason to remake amovie that come out not even one decade ago. Why not redo the animals? I mean, that’s something that might be mildly entertaining rather than a “new” movie we’ve all seen/read a dozen times before.
I’d kill to see Zak Penn helm a feature penned by Zach Helm.
