Juno Temple Confirmed for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

     March 24, 2011

Last week, we reported that UK actress Juno Temple (Atonement) was in talks to join Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. As of today, those talks have officially ended as Temple has been confirmed for her role as a “street-smart Gotham girl.” While Variety fails to offer up more details regarding Temple’s character, rumors and speculation are already stacking up on the interwebs (hard to believe, right?) that Temple could be playing any Bat-character from Catwoman-sidekick Holly Robinson to current Batgirl Stephanie Brown.

Just for funsies, feel free to join me after the jump for a quick breakdown of some of Temple’s potential roles. The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20, 2012.

holly-robinson-batman-imageAs you can see, courtesy of Wikipedia, if Temple were to make a turn as Holly Robinson, it may require her portrayal of a teenage prostitute who is roommates with Hathaway’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman (sounds pretty “street-smart” to me):

“Holly first appeared in Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One as a juvenile prostitute who lives with Selina Kyle. Holly plays a small but significant role in the story when she encounters a disguised Bruce Wayne during one of his early attempts at crimefighting and stabs him in the leg. Wounded by this attack and a subsequent battle, Wayne escapes back to his home, brooding on the fact that his enemies do not fear him. This encounter is an impetus for his creation of the Batman persona. As such, Holly plays an indirect role in the Dark Knight’s origin.”

In regards to “Go-Nightly’s” skills/abilities, the almighty Wikipedia has this to say:

“Holly has no meta-abilities. She has been taught stealth, athletics, hot-wiring, lock-picking, thieving, acrobatics, and the martial arts by Selina. Ted Grant trained her in a form of kick-boxing adapted for street use, as well as English boxing. She has also spent time at a Female Furies training camp. She is proficient in the use the whip, firearms, and knives. As ofCountdown to Final Crisis #10, Holly had a portion of the cunning and skill of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. While she possessed these powers, she was an excellent marksman, and had the ability to track people by their scent. She lost these powers after returning to Earth.”

stephanie-brown-batman-imageIf Temple’s character were to be named Stephanie Brown, audiences of The Dark Knight Rises could very well see the actress taking on roles as integral as Robin (for whom she briefly served as the fourth iteration) or Batgirl (a role that also sounds as if it would value “street-smarts…” this is tougher than I was expecting). As her Wikipedia entry points out:

“Stephanie Brown was introduced in a three-issue story arc in Detective Comics #647-649 in which writer Chuck Dixon reinvented a villain called the Cluemaster. Dixon created the Cluemaster’s daughter, Stephanie, as simply a plot device for this story, seeking to “spoil” her father’s plans. Even so, the character was well-received by fans. The following year, Dixon launched the first ongoing Robin series and featured the Spoiler as a foil and love interest for Tim Drake. Stephanie remained an integral part of Robin‘s supporting cast for over a decade, until her editorially-dictated death in the 2004 crossover storyline “Batman: War Games”. The character was also at the center of a high-profile teen pregnancy storyline in 1998, which caused Wizard Magazine to name Robin the best ongoing comic book of the year.”

“Her death was revealed to have been faked in a 2008 story, and in 2009, she became the eponymous lead character in the Batgirl series written by Bryan Q. Miller, with pencils by Lee Garbett.”

Of course, at this point in time, all of this talk regarding Temple’s role is purely speculation. That said, look for more details regarding the part to become available as The Dark Knight Rises‘ May shoot inches closer.

I know the chances are quite slim, but what about Harley Quinn?

  • grimcicle

she’s too young to play harley quinn. remember that harley was already an established psychiatrist at arkham by the time she met the joker. we’d need an actress more in her late 20′s for the role.

  • Nads

So batgirl is gonna be in TDKR?????

  • Frank

It will be Harley Quinn! I knew they would add her in a small brief role! She is perfect!

    • Grimcicle

Don’t know much about the character, do you?

  • Rockslide

I know what Nolan has said about Robin in the past, but he’s all up for twisting things around and surprising the audience. Is it possible he could have enough power to introduce a female Robin? (Since we are merely speculating here.) I know she wouldn’t be the first, but she would be the first in a film (not counting that one episode of BtAS.)

  • Migz13

Again, I think Nolan has just the right role for here whatever it is.
Though I have a huge hunch it’ll be that small role as Selina’s “side-kick” in year one.

  • Jason White

could she simply be Barbara Gordon, maybe even pre-batgirl

    • Grimcicle

Barbara Gordon is the name of Jim Gordon’s wife in the Nolanverse.

I just hope that there will be no batgirl or something similar!!! Robin would also not fit in, for my taste!!! Nothing of the sidekick kind would be good in my opinion!!! I really don´t know what Nolan want´s to do…It can´t be Harley(at least I can´t imagine it), I think we will se a Nolan-invented character, or he will change a character to be moe ˝Nolan-like˝

Or a further consideration is the role of Carrie Kelly, who first appeared in Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns; who ultimately became the next Robin; who was quite the “street-smart Gotham girl”…

Come on guys. Think this out. It really isn’t going to be Batgirl, or especially Barbara. You can clearly see she’s a baby in the last movie. Chances are she’s just going to be Selina’s prostitute friend.

  • thesomnambulant

this feels very batman: year one to me. the pairing of selina kyle and holly would be perfect. if joseph g-l is playing a falcone, that would make sense, too. i just have no clue where bane fits into this whole thing. the main thing to keep in mind is that nolan has never made a bad movie.

Kind of like how Detective Montoya was replaced by detective Ramiez in TDK, i think the charater will be Holly Robinson or someone like her.

  • Mena

The Joker was sent to Arkham.
They’re going to end the movie’s with a hint that he gets out with her help.
    Fucking finally.

I’m convinced this girl is going to be Harley, it makes sense with the way the story line even if, unfortunately, Heath Ledger has died. The plot of comics, following Joker, is that he goes to Arkham Asylum after being defeated by Batman at the end of Dark Knight. It’s there that he meets Arleen, who becomes Harley when she falls in love with him. Despite the, POSSIBLE, absence of the Joker (I say possible because Joseph Gordon Levitt has signed on and we all know he looks A LOT like Heath, his character is also described as a “wronged cop”. Sounds a lot like something that could trigger a mental breakdown, no?) I could go one forever about speculations, but I believe her to be Harley Quinn. Time line wise it makes sense, and aside from that, I want to see Harley on the big screen for ONCE!
