Channing Tatum Flies in First Image from The Wachowski Siblings’ Sci-Fi Adventure JUPITER ASCENDING

by     Posted 292 days ago

We caught the first trailer for The Matrix writer/director siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski’s upcoming sci-fi film Jupiter Ascending a few weeks ago, but now the first official image from the film has been released online.  This photo perfectly encompasses the gleeful oddness of the pic, as we see star Channing Tatum in his werewolf hybrid makeup flying through the air while brandishing a force shield of some sort, sparks a-blazing.  The story follows Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a recent Russian immigrant who scrubs toilets for a living, but then discovers she has the genetic signature that makes her next in line to be Queen of the Universe.  Tatum’s character is an ex-military hunter tasked with tracking her down.  If all of that somehow wasn’t exciting enough, Speed Racer composer Michael Giacchino is penning the score.

Hit the jump to take a look at the image in full.  The film also stars Sean BeanEddie RedmayneDouglas BoothTuppence MiddletonJames D’ArcyTim Pigott-Smith, and Doona Bae.  Jupiter Ascending opens in 3D on July 25, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Jupiter Ascending:

From the streets of Chicago to the far-flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born under a night sky, with signs predicting she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Tatum looks so Battlefield Earthy here.

As a Wachowski fan, I really hope the movie itself doesn’t follow suit.

Wasn’t a fan of their last film Cloud Atlas (or even Speed Racer) but still thought it was good to see something original and different. I was nervous that after the film flopped that studios would pull the rug on original sci-fi flicks and we’d forever be seeing reboots and sequels (Robocop, Total Recall). I remember reading an interview w Kate Beckingsdale about how her husband wanted to direct an original film that he had written but the studio told him no and that only films like reboots of Total Recall were all they were interested in. She said that he had tried for several years to make it but with no success so just went along w the studio’s idea and made a film that even he wasn’t proud of in the end. It just made me think that we, as fanboys who love to see new and exciting things on the big screen, should consider seeing films outside of our own comfort level instead of things like Transformers: Age of Craptular (myself included) and start supporting more original films like this (unless it’s pure shit or a poorly made film).

Come on, Cloud Atlas was absolutely stunning. It’s themes were epic, the cast was huge and amazing, the score was stunning, the action was jaw-dropping, it was beautifully shot, incredibly moving, and just plain…genius.

In my opinion, one of the best films in a long, long time.

I think the film was beautifully shot and the acting was great. I just felt that it didn’t connect with me as it felt a little hammy in some areas (kinda of like the film Crash came off). Still a greatly made film just one that didn’t do a lot for me. But I’m still glad films of this nature are made as it gets people to see something different and original and is why I think we need to continue supporting these films as I will when Jupiter Ascending comes out.

      • The Flobbit

A little hammy? Please expound. Well anyways, the film did a lot for me. It’s incredibly powerful, and really quite beautiful. Not to mention the originality that is hard to come by in Hollywood.

tbh, i don’t think cloud atlas was really a hollywood film – i heard the wachowski siblings had to get outside investment & marketing from germany(?)

      • The Flobbit

Exactly. That is what I was saying. You can’t find this quality in Hollywood. Plus, director Tom Tykwer is German so it’s logical funding would come from there.

i’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Definitely the love child of Dune and Battlefield Earth. Is there an abortionist in the theater?

this could be a disaster, or absolutely epic. either way tatum looks completely ridiculous.

  • The Flobbit

This movie looks so badass. I am getting chills just thinking about the epic theme, the stunning action (reminiscent of The Matrix), but what struck me the most in the trailer was the presence of Eddie Redmayne, who in the space of 8 words and 3 seconds had me absolutely FLOORED. Brilliant. This is on my most anticipated list.
