Warner Bros. has released an international trailer for the Wachowski Siblings‘ upcoming sci-fi adventure film, Jupiter Ascending.  The story follows Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a recent Russian immigrant who scrubs toilets for a living, but then discovers she has the genetic signature that makes her next in line to be Queen of the Universe.  Channing Tatum plays an ex-military hunter tasked with tracking her down.  The movie looking like it will be a lot of fun, and it’s also exciting to see a non-adaptation as part of the summer blockbuster season.  That probably means fewer people will see it because it hasn’t been pre-sold to them in some other form, but personally, I’m just glad to be getting a new Wachowskis movie this year.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Sean BeanEddie RedmayneDouglas BoothTuppence MiddletonJames D’ArcyTim Pigott-Smith, and Doona Bae.  Jupiter Ascending opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on July 18th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Jupiter Ascending:

From the streets of Chicago to the far-flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born under a night sky, with signs predicting she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

I find it odd that Matt looks forward to Wachowski Siblings releases when their track record for their actual movies is Matrix annnndd….. um…. what else was kinda good? Speed Racer? No. Um. Revolutions? No. Wait, what about Reloaded? No. Cloud Atlas? Well, that’s one that wasn’t horrible.

So what exactly does Matt see in these “visionary” film makers, exactly? Kinda seems like they are still riding on their clout of old.

To paraphrase Harry. S. Plinkett, who said- one should use special effects to tell a story, not a story to tell special effects. Or something to that regard.

Meanwhile, Mat Goldberg, who has yet to make a film, still will act like he understands what should have happened on set. (that last one was unrelated to the Wachowski Siblings comment and was strictly a jab at Goldberg’s “stellar” journalism and criticism skills)

    • Calcazone

Well actually a lot of people (including myself) liked Speed Racer, and the opinion of Cloud Atlas was split, though I didn’t see it myself.

      • nintendozapper

I like Bad Boys 2, we all have skeletons in our closet.
But that still doesn’t take away from my shock that Goldberg is actually excited by any mainstream modern blockbuster filmmakers. Especially the Wachowski’s.

      • AdeoAdversary

Bad Boys 2 is awesome, it knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be anything else.

    • GrimReaper07

Speed Racer is amazing. Haven’t seen Cloud Atlas, but I’ve heard its great as much as that its terrible.

    • somedudeorwhatever

Ironically I think you’re paraphrasing George Lucas actually.

      • Nintendozapper

No. Plinkett said Lucas used a story to tell special effects. It was a play on words off of what Lucas had said years ago about using special effects to tell a story.

    • verasgunn

They wrote the screenplay for V for Vendetta, which was a pretty spectacular movie and decent adaptation.

      • nintendozapper

True. Though, they also wrote Matrix Reloaded, and Revolutions. So that kinda muddles it up a bit.

    • The Flobbit

They would rest in the ranks safe for all time if it was JUST for that kung-fu, mind-blowing extravaganza that was The Matrix. But no! They made Cloud Atlas, probably the most visually stunning, thought-provoking, original, epic film made in 10 years.

That is why they can be safely called visionary.

      • pandapool

Spot on about “Cloud Atlas.” It’s such an amazing movie. One of the only movies I have ever rewatched immediately after the first viewing.

    • Displa[er

Bound. An excellent and tense film by the Wachowskis, and their directorial debute. They have the chops, but we shall see, they’re if nothing very exuberant filmmakers, and I think the industry needs a little exuberance. Props to the Plinkett nod.

That’s it! The wasikowski bros should definitely direct the justice league movie!

    • God’s Diamond

Pretty sure affleck agreed to be batman so he can do justice league

  • Farrell

I don’t understand. This is the EXACT SAME trailer that debut in the states a while back. International trailers tend to be different, so why even bother writing this story?

  • eternalozzie

I saw the US trailer yesterday before Robocop yesterday and I have to say it looked cool until I realized it stars Kunis and Tatum (the worst actor ever) … then I was like crap.

Looks like another stinker from the Wachowskis. Cloud Atlas was one of the worst films ever made, not to mention Matrix 2 & 3. Stay away from this folks

    • herpderp

Worst movie ever made? pleaseeeee. It was just 5 pretty good short stories strung together in a fashion that makes more sense in the book. But yea, totally worst than anything uwe boll shat out.

      • http://redappleworld.com/ Imo

        The emphasis was on *one*

    • The Flobbit

Cloud Atlas was a mind-blowing, epic, brilliantly acted and visually stunning adaptation that was probably too complex for your Transformers mind to comprehend.

      • http://redappleworld.com/ Imo

Must be a pretty small mind then. Fans of Cloud Atlas come back with the same argument: what? you didn’t like the pretentious film I liked? Oh you must be a Transformers fan then…Smart ;-)

not to mention matrix 2 and 3!!!
why do you even bother to watch sci fi stuffs, better stick with your twilights and teen wolf.

  • Neo Racer

This is gonna be a laughable mess, maybe as bad as Battlefield Earth. I called it.

  • SouthAfrica

If you’re saying that this trailer excites you the same way as Guardians of Galaxy then there is something very wrong with your taste in movies..

I’m always glad to see original material get made, especially on a large scale such as this. However, my reservation is with the Wachowski siblings whose track record has been spotty (looking at you Matrix Revolutions, Speed Racer and still on the fence about Cloud Atlas). Still I hope it’s good and does well as it will inspire confidence in other studios to take risks in new material that is not comic book/toy/YA related material.

  • Just Saying…

So he’s like Prince Thundercat or something? And she’s Urinella of the toilet cakes? Hm…Wizard of Oz, Fifth Element, Cinderella mash. Could be fun on TV.

  • God’s Diamond

The summary sounds like something Lana wachowski felt all his/her life. They’re both from Chicago and felt unfulfilled and are now extraordinary. Larry probably felt trapped in a man’s body all his life until bound and the matrix trilogy gave him the funds necessary to become lana. And If you think about it, during the promotion for matrix 2 and 3 they refused to do interviews and be seen on camera, and now that lana is comfortable they are appearing on camera for cloud Atlas and probably this film too. Anyway I liked the Sci Fi scenes from cloud Atlas and maybe this will float my boat

I just noticed something. The only two movies that most people like from the wachowski are bound and matrix 1, both featuring joey pantoliano. Maybe he’s their good luck charm like that cheers guy is for the pixar guys

  • mattinacan

Wachowski films are fresh and entertaining, this looks no different. very exciting to see original material.

  • The Clone

I really hope people go see this movie. We need more original sci-fi, but more importantly, we need more people going to see original movies like this over sequals, remakes, etc.

    • lordjim

well, i´d like to see more original movies, but this one looks like fifth element meets babylon a.d., i don´t know how the movie turns out, but the trailer is not original at all, this looks like the same boring hollywood cliche we have been fed with a thousand times – at least remakes are honest about their theft.

    • Ken

Just because something is original doesn’t necessarily equate to being good or worthwhile.

  • hallann

Channing as super super soldier just doesn’t fly.

  • orianalianna

    Snnnnnooooooooooorefeeeeeeest……
