Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures have released a fantastic new trailer for The Matrix Trilogy and Cloud Atlas writers/directors Lana and Andy Wachowski’s original sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending.  The story follows Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a recent Russian immigrant who scrubs toilets for a living, but then discovers she has the genetic signature that makes her next in line to be Queen of the Universe.  Channing Tatum plays an ex-military half-werewolf half-albino hunter tasked with tracking her down.  One thing is abundantly clear from this new trailer: the scope of Jupiter Ascending is positively epic.  The Wachowski siblings appear to have gone all-out with this sci-fi pic, and the result is an ambitious, colorful, and massive world that looks like a whole lot of fun.  Eddie Redmayne feels almost Shakespearean as the villain, and I’m incredibly impressed by just how big and other-worldly this thing is.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  The film also stars Sean BeanDouglas BoothTuppence MiddletonJames D’ArcyTim Pigott-Smith, and Doona Bae.  Jupiter Ascending opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on July 18th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Jupiter Ascending:

From the streets of Chicago to the far-flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born under a night sky, with signs predicting she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

    could be neat…

Better trailer than the last one, but Tatum’s makeup still cracks me up. Honestly, when I read “Jupiter Jones,” I was hoping they were doing a Three Investigators movie.

    • YouStartedit

The film looks good but that eye make-up looks a bit homoerotic

am i the only one getting a sort of Dune vibe here?

    • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

It’s Dune meets Star Wars meets John Carter meets Minority Report meets Thor meets Could Atlas.

Let’s hope the character development will not be neglected.

It’s a Wachowski flick, which means that character development will be VERY light, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be good. They don’t really focus on characters with a lot of depth, they use them more as avatars for certain concepts and ethos – Neo the person was bland and shallow, but what he represented was huge and complex. Same with the Cloud Atlas – in that case partially because the book already did it that way but again the focus was more on the concepts being represented rather than the individuals.

Personally I love their style and I think it’s great at what it does, I just never watch their movies expecting to find deep characters.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. If the Wachowskis are doing it, then I’m sold. They are by far the most ambitious filmmakers we have working today, and their movies, especially Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas, have shown me that not all movies can be stagnant or unoriginal. Can we all just pause for a moment to take in how crazy it is that we live in a world where these two are continued to be funded in order to make big movies like this. I really can’t wait!

    • Wilsonvolleyball

I was hoping they would bring in some original aliens and not just people with pointy ears. Other than that, it looks indeed quite ambitious.

    • lightenup69

Oh boy oh boy! I sure hope they have a Rave party in this movie! The Wachowski sisters are AwEzOmE DUDE!

    • George

Cloud Atlas looked weird at first from the trailers, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good that movie was. Very underrated.. I’ll give this one a chance as well. Watching that trailer made me wish that the Wachowskis would make a Halo movie. It would be so epic!

      • alk

Cloud Atlas was not directed by the Wachowski’s. They were only producers. All credit goes to Tom Twyker if you enjoyed the actual movie.

      • milo

        All three directed.

      • dudeofdudedamn,man

Oh Cloud Atlas was DEFINITELY directed by the Wachowskis. And yeah, Tom Twyker.

This trailer had me convinced that Eddie Redmayne should be the one to play Doctor Doom.

  • pandapool

    Looks absolutely amazing!

  • JK1193

Eddie Redmayne is the villain. Get out of here, he looks like he’s having a lot of fun. And was that Doona Bae in the blue hair on the blue motorbike? Hot!!!

  • AManWithAKilt

Excited to see an old fashioned Space Opera again.

      Also check out John Carter.

So now that one of the wachowskis is a she-man; is she in charge of making Channing Tatum look like a boof?

Well, he really did look like kind of a boof, just saying.

WHYYY does Channing Tatum look so stupid and comical in this movie? I never found his face to be especially attractive, but I personally think the makeup choice is terrible. I’m excited to see what Eddie Redmayne can do as a villain though, and for what sort of universe the Wachowski’s turn out.. hopefully its a good one, but I honestly don’t know if I can get past Tatum’s makeup without wanting to barf/laugh/slouch-down-in- embarrassment for him….

  • Doug_101

Prediction: Sean Bean’s character will die before the credits roll. It is known.

Other than that, it looks interesting. I’ll totally check it out. Cloud Atlas was pretty good and Speed Racer was a surprise.

  • Strong Enough

All i know is deez hos ain’t loyal

  • STAR-LORD #ROUGE SQUAD

Looks like a solid action/adventure flick.

  • Jamie Teller

I’m not sure what I think here. With Cloud Atlas, I was really excited by the ambition and scope of the material. Here…it looks like it’s got all the ingredients, but something about the trailer doesn’t quite excite me. It looks good, but…eh? Maybe it’s because Jupiter herself seems to be kind of a blah character, but based solely on the trailer, I’m left cold.

  • Connor

Someone who looks like Mila Kunis would never be a maid, i dont care what universe

    • mike

      Shut up Meg

  • lightenup69

I am waiting for the sequel, “Uranus Descending”.

  • NICK НΛRT

visually looks incredible, not totally sold on the premise yet though

  • Tritium3H

What are the odds that Sean Bean’s character makes it past the first third of the film, without getting killed?

Edit: Woops, sorry Doug_101, just noticed you posted something similar.

  • Ian Malcolm

Main character standing with a gun contemplating Life….. I haven’t seen that before.

That’s it! These guys must direct the new justice league movie !

  • Thoosa

The real question is: Will Sean Bean die ? :)

    Dear god, Channing Tatum, puke.

That looks amazing! Count me in on that!

I can’t help but think of Guardians of the Galaxy when I see this trailer, and side by side, I’d always chose Guardians. Jupiter Ascending just looks like its trying too hard, its taking itself way too seriously, especially when Tatum’s wearing that crazy makeup and wardrobe.

I have to agree that this movie will flop, despite any critical raves or whatever it may receive, the general public isn’t going to buy into it.

Kunis is about to become the biggest fucking star on earth. I need to bang her.Um, oh no I didn’t!

  • Abed

Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, while not that great movies, were not flops. Reloaded made twice as much as the first movie and had the second highest rated opening at the time behind Spiderman. Speed Racer flopped yes. Cloud Atlas made back all of it’s money, and while it wasn’t a huge hit, it wasn’t meant to be a blockbuster. It is quickly becoming a cult favorite.
So they have only had one actual flop.

  • pandapool

For being on a movie site all the time, you sure do seem to not like any movies. Every time I see a comment of yours it’s negative. Lighten up buddy!

  • Abed

By highest rated, I meant highest grossing.

  • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

Still, Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were monumental dungs.
They were the Star wars prequels counterparts.

Now how about you tell us what you really think!

    your’e a disgusting person

It’s amazing how smart you think you are, when in fact, you are just spouting dribble disguised as poignant commentary. We are embarrassed for you. Also, your racism is appalling.

  • Shofixti

Uh – why are you acting like there are original stories out there?

Also – if you really did come up with a completely original narrative – how would people understand it? Our identities are reflections of our culture and such a narrative would be as interesting as computer code.

  • Old Soldier

    “…white American culture…”
    Here we go again.

  • the king of comedy

I don`t care if those ideas were explored before in other cultures or mediums, I`ve read books and saw animes that had similar ideas, but it was never explored in cinema before, and they did an amazing job doing it, creating their own compelling world and characters. Many directors take their inspiration from other sources, but I believe they made the matrix universe their own. Even if they hadn`t wrotte the screenplay, and this was some anime adaptation, the direction of the movie was amazing, the movie was groundbreaking and challenging for the audience as it refussed to spoon fed everything there is to know to the audience.

  • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

If the Wachowski have plagiarized anyone for Matrix, it would have been Philip K. Dick’s “Time Out of Joint”
And I challenge you to report one book or one movie that tackled this original plot before him.

I will give you 1 week to do your google-maths

  • Lewida Funji

    Then why are you here?

  • Old Soldier

But, if this movie was made in France you would think “THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!”

  • GrimReaper07

How about you loosen up and like both? I loved both Only God Forgives and The Avengers. You don’t have to choose between blockbusters and more serious cinema. You can enjoy both on two completely different levels. One for the entertainment, the other for the art.

  • YouStartedit

Exactly, this site is more blockbusters ( potential )

  • partysub

You’ve said the exact same things that people have already criticized the bros for, but you write like you’re doing a poor impression of somebody smart. You sound like if somebody ran every troll comment through a butler translator.

Calm it down, you’re overcompensating for your lack of opinion with a persona.

  • Old Soldier

Then who pray tell did “white Americans” steal the Matrix from oh wise one? How about Boyz in the Hood? Star Wars? Citizen Kane?

  • Old Soldier

I’m just holding my place in line to read his reply.
    But not hold my breath.
