JURASSIC PARK 3D Re-Release Set for July 19, 2013

     March 15, 2012

Since 3D re-releases seem to be all the rage these days (thanks to The Lion King), we’ll soon get the opportunity to re-watch some fan favorites in theaters. Disney has a full slate of 3D re-releases planned, including Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid, and now comes word that dinosaurs will once again terrorize movie theaters, though this time it’ll be in three dimensions. Variety’s Jeff Sneider reports that Jurassic Park is set for a 3D re-release on July 19th, 2013. That weekend is currently only home to the DreamWorks Animation film Turbo, but it’s also a couple weeks after Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse hits theaters.

Steve (the Collider one) spoke with producer Kathleen Kennedy about the possible 3D re-release of Jurassic Park back in December. At the time she said they only wanted to do the 3D conversion if they could do it right, with Kennedy clarifying that that means Spielberg and director of photography Janusz Kaminski would be sitting down and evaluating the film frame-by-frame. Hit the jump to see what else she had to say about Jurassic Park’s 3D conversion.

jurassic-park-3d-imageIt should be noted that the director of photography on Jurassic Park was Dean Cundey, but Kaminski has been Spielberg’s collaborator for years so it’s possible he’d be the one sitting down with Spielberg. Kennedy explained the importance of having the cinematographer sit down with the director for the 3D post-conversion:

“I’m not a huge proponent of post-conversion, but I think if the filmmaker gets intricately involved in the post-conversion—it’s not just a technological exercise—then I think it can be really, really good and I think Jurassic Park is a perfect example of a movie that could work really, really well as a 3D picture…I also think it’s tricky because unless you framed the movie with [3D] in mind, not all those shots—quick cutting, that kind of thing—it’s not necessarily going to translate, and so that’s why you’ve gotta have the DP and you’ve gotta have the director frame-by-frame involved in the process of that conversion.”

In essence, this means that Universal must have signed off on Spielberg being hands-on in the post-conversion of Jurassic Park. This is incredibly reassuring, as we’ll not only know that Jurassic Park 3D has the Steven Spielberg seal of approval, but also that Spielberg was intricately involved in the conversion process. Now, ready the kid inside of you for a stupendous experience at the movies next July.

This just made my day 10X over! My all-time favorite movie coming back next July…my birthday month? Today is a good day :)

  • mattedscreen

In 1993, I celebrated my 11th birthday with my friends at a screening of Jurassic Park, 20 years later to the day… I’ll get to celebrate my 31st birthday with Jurassic Park… IN 3D!!!! Can’t wait :)

Are they releasing the whole trilogy in 3D? That photo is from JP3. Either way, I’m so excited.

  • scottish_punk

Eh, not sure, but I highly doubt it. Neither TLW nor (especially) JP3 are that beloved to warrant a re-release (although I personally loved TLW but disliked JP3). TLW is, I think, way too dark anyway for 3D. And JP3 is…well…JP3. Nuff said :/

I hope Kathleen Kennedy meant that Dean Cundey will supervise the 3D conversion with Spielberg, not Kaminski. Cundey was the DP for the first movie, and he should be outraged if Kaminski supervises the process of a film he didn’t shoot.

When I first heard that they were re-releasing movies in 3D, like The Lion King, my first thought was greedy studios. After seeing some trailers of re-releases and more movies in 3D, I’ve changed my mind. I’d love to see movies like Lord of the Rings, Fifith Element, The Matrix and tons of others on the big screen in full 3d.

Really? We already know the post-conversions aren’t that great, essentially being like a 2D pop-up book, and the Jurassic Park movie really hasn’t held up well over time. It’s a thoroughly mediocre flick.

      Opinions, opinions…

you’re extremely dumb, Jurassic Park is the best CGI film ever made besides perhaps avatar and Lord of the rings. Jurassic Park pushed the threshold of CGI in movies and made it ok to do because of how it looks. And even 19 yrs later no dinosaur movie has ever come close to matching Jurassic Park

“ready the kid inside of you for a stupendous experience at the movies next July.”

Wait, what? I thought the title says 2013? Although I am not a fan of added 3d, I know I’ll have to go see this.

  • Deathstriker

I’d rather wait for “Jurassic Park 4″. :-(

  • dbrock

Hell yes…I was like 8 or 9 when this was in theaters and my parents were super over protective and wouldnt let me see it! It was a DINOSAUR movie! Finally will see it on the big screen! 3d ok whatever but there are a few t-rex shots that are already perfect for 3d like when he busts through that whole tree when hes chasing the car…oh shiiit this is gonna be sweet!

I hope that they will do new cgi for the T rex and some of the other predators, now that we know for a fact that most dinosaurs were covered in colorful proto feathers and looked more like birds than lizards.
