JURASSIC PARK 4 to Open in 3D on June 13, 2014; Steven Spielberg Will Produce

     January 11, 2013

Universal Pictures just announced that Jurassic Park IV will open in 3D on June 13, 2014.  While many are quick to speculate that Steven Spielberg will direct, having just shelved the  sci-fi adaptation Robopocalypse for an indefinite period of time, no director is attached as of yet.  Spielberg will return as a producer, however.  Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, both of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, just turned in a fresh draft of the film earlier this week.  For those of you keeping score at home, that gives Universal less than 18 months to do all the pre-production, shooting and post-production visual effects (these are dinosaurs in 3D after all).  You can get a glimpse at what the original Jurassic Park looks like in 3D when it opens on April 5th, including a one-week IMAX run.  Hit the jump for more on Jurassic Park IV.

jurassic-park-4 imageDeadline broke the news that Jurassic Park IV will roar into theaters in the summer of 2014.  Here’s what we know so far.  Producer Kathleen Kennedy previously spoke about the project in an interview with Steve at the end of 2011.  Back then she said that Jurassic Park IV would take a “great script” to get off the ground, since the property was not originally intended to be a franchise.  It seems like the execs are happy with Jaffa and Silver’s latest draft since a release date announcement is a strong showing of support.

As recently as last summer, producer Frank Marshall also commented on Jurassic Park IVsaying:

“I would say that it will be on the screen within two years.”

Spot on, Mr. Marshall.  The producer also commented on his anticipation for the what they’re going to be able to do with visual effects on this picture:

“That’s what’s gonna be great about it, technology’s taken a leap now that we can really do some great things.”

Although Jurassic Park IV is definitely going to be released in 3D, Marshall had previously commented that practical effects still resonate better with audiences and helps the actors perform, so there is hope that the entire thing won’t be green-screened.  That same year, Spielberg declined taking the director’s chair for the sequel, but we’ll see where he stands this year.

      I CAME!

      • Dave Trumbore

        I saw!

      • DREDD

        I kicked his ass!!

Looking forward to JP 4. Hopefully a few great scenes omitted from both books will make it into it some how. My fave scene in book one was the Dinghy going gently up that river in the sun, with dilophosaurs along the banks surrounded by jungle, then ahead of them down river there’s a huge shiny dome (the aviary!) pterodactyl attack. also the T Rex attacks the Dinghy in the river by that waterfall. Wish it was filmed in the original. Also Lex riding the baby triceratops through the cornfield.

More than anything, i wanna see the Theme park return and open to the public. The last two films i liked both, but there was no PARK! open it, revamp it, put in an underwater section with giant sea dinos and Jaws 3 style glass tubes. It could be incredible as a new trilogy but one event and lots more people.

      • Steve

I’m about to get all NERDY here but there were no such things as sea dinosaurs (that we know of).

      • The Dino Pro

Yes, you are right my friend, there were no such things as sea dinosaurs. BUT there was sea predators (liopleurodon, megalodon, elasmosaurus etc) and unfortunately people call them “sea dinosaurs”. the “sea dinos” and the “flying dinos” are dinosaurs, they are totally different species.

    FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, i guess it goes without saying that its going to be “more gritty and darker” and “grounded in reality” than its predecessors.

      hahaha gold!

FINALLY!!!!!!!! Life Has Found A Way. Thank you Universal, I’m so excited. Love this franchise and hope they can get some of the orignal cast back

  • gotheeem

dave- any confirmation or info on that status that finally dicaprio is gonna go full blockbuster
and that he is attached as the grown up “tim murphy” and emily blunt as the older sister “lex murphy”.

just fyi- heard a little bird singing!

    • Dave Trumbore

Haven’t heard anything of the sort for DiCaprio or Blunt, so I’d file that one in the rumor bin for now.

      • gotheeem

also heard that a mr. t..t. and his co are muscling in to produce and a certain dir is their top choice. also a little birdy overheard e.b. talking at critics re a blockbuster about to break news. just so happens a certain actor was killing it w/ mr. t.t. all of them were drinking till late with a certain studio head.

If Lex and Tim are in it the original actors can still play them.

    • Ur mom

I wonder what happened to them anyway. The boy who played Tim is in the new GI Joe: Retaliation movie coming out this year.
I don’t know about the girl though. TMZ released a pic of her a few years ago and that’s about it.

      • im mister manager

the kid who played tim i think played dustin moskovitz in the social network

      • Dredd

He was the main character in THE PACIFIC.

  • Strong Enough

this is so stupid. you cast a date before you cast a fucking director? smh

    • Steve

This is not the least bit surprising. Blockbusters have to jostle for the best opening weekend well in advance. If the script has been written, it’s just a matter of logistics to hire a director and cast the actors. This isn’t War and Peace.

  • Lance

“They should set it in the future so super soldiers with plasma rifles have to take on herds of cybernetically enhanced dinos with missile pods on each soldier. Also, there needs to be a really hot babe.”

And thus, the world got… MICHAEL BAY’S JURASSIC PARK.

      ^THIS!!! :D

    • 2 Dimensional Mr Kippling

You never heard of the old cartoon and toy line ‘DINO-RIDERS’ then? look it up on youtube

That could be a Bay film for sure, it would be awful but id want to see that just for armored, weaponized dinos!

  • Sandy

    Give me MORE!!!!!!!!!!! Cant wait!!

  • Gerard Ridge

finally some sh!t comes out!! I have waited 12 years for this movie that I don’t care if it’s going to be better or worse than JP/// …I just want one more movie, JP is my fav movie but after 20 years sometimes it turns a little bit boring.

I would love to see Tom Hiddleston, Tom Hardy, Cobie Smulders, a Carnotaur, a Dilophosaur and the greaT rex in JP4.

  • Michael Horne

I love the idea of opening a Park to the public and doing a full-scale disaster movie with lots of dino-fodder. Bringing back some of the original cast would be great – but of course their characters would be very much “HELL no!”. Just save us from a reboot, per-lease! The original trilogy works very well, so for me it has to be some kind of continuation.

You guys are aware they made two mediocre sequels to the first one, right? And now they’re trying again…

    • Mark

Mediocre for dinosaur movies isn’t really the same as mediocre for other films. If it’s got dinosaurs mediocre still works.

  • JM

Get Spielberg onboard to direct, and get Harrison Ford in there too (he was originally offered the role of Grant) as a nice little ‘wink’ to the audience. Hope they go back to basics with this one. Like Jaws. And no bloody kids this time!

    • Dredd

I never knew that about Ford! that would have been great!

I hope theres an explanation around why some of the Dino’s look the way they do, ie in real life Velociraptor was about a meter tall and covered in feathers. And Dilophosaurus was about 8 feet tall (ish)

      Easy to explain away. ie..
The Dinosaurs were changed from what they should be due to problems with the Frog dna
or They were purposely changed to appeal to the spectators in the park to look more how they imagined them.

      • Steve

They were actually Utahraptors. The book/films just didn’t know that at the time. As for the size of the Dilophosaurus, I prefer to think of the one in the first film as a juvenile.
