Universal has announced that the Jurassic World sequel will open on June 22, 2018, and that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will reprise their roles. The studio has also announced that Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who previously said he wouldn’t return to direct the sequel, will be coming back to pen the script with Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly. Additionally, Frank Marshall is returning to produce and Trevorrow will executive produce alongside Steven Spielberg.
For those who haven’t seen Jurassic World [and since the movie is now the third highest-grossing film of all-time, there are very few of you], Trevorrow’s movie sets up a sequel with Dr. Wu (B.D. Wong) revealing that in the time between Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, he became a wildly irresponsible prick and that he’s totally okay bringing the dinosaur DNA to the mainland.
Also, I’m not surprised that they’re referring to this as a “Jurassic World sequel” rather than “Jurassic Park 5“. Trevorrow’s film is now the financial beast of the franchise, and cementing Boring, Handsome Guy and a Irresponsible Theme Park Director as the lead characters means that this sequel won’t have the issue of The Lost World, which seemed to pick a lead character at random and landed on the first film’s comic relief. Owen and Claire are kind of terrible, but maybe Trevorrow and Connelly will make the characters somewhat interesting for a sequel. At least the awful kids aren’t coming back (or if they are, they haven’t been announced yet).
So what do you want to see in a Jurassic World sequel? Crazier dinosaurs? Likable characters? An overbearingly knowing joke about proper footwear for the female protagonist? Sound off in the comments.
Here’s the press release:
Executive producer Steven Spielberg and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s JURASSIC WORLD SEQUEL, a follow-up to one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of cinema. Producer Frank Marshall once again joins Spielberg in leading the team of filmmakers for the next chapter in the franchise. The film will be written by Jurassic World’s director, Colin Trevorrow, and Derek Connolly. Spielberg will be joined by Trevorrow as executive producer.
