No one was really surprised when Universal announced development of Jurassic World 2. In fact, it was more surprising it took the studio so long to make it official. The sequel to the highest-grossing movie of 2015 and the third highest-grossing movie of all time is currently slated for release on June 22, 2018. But, as it turns out, Colin Trevorrow and Steven Spielberg are already working more longterm.

Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley participated in a The Hollywood Reporter’s annual executive roundtable. Among the topics on the discussion menu was the future of Jurassic World. When asked if the studio thought it would make the release date preset for the sequel, Langley said:

There's no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director] Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He's been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It's a happy surprise.

The actual reveal of a trilogy isn’t surprising. Earlier this year, Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, said the film was always designed to act as the first in a new trilogy. He said:

Jurassic World is all based on Ian Malcolm’s quote: ‘you stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you knew what you had, you’d packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox and now you want to sell it.’ …So with Jurassic World 2 it’s: “dinosaurs and man separated by 65 million years of evolution have been thrown back into the mix together – how can we know what to expect?’. That’s not the exact quote, but you get the idea.

Furthermore, Chris Pratt jokingly said that he’s signed on for “I think 38 movies or something.” So, he’s surely coming back for the third — that is, assuming the sequel performs just as well as the first to warrant a third. Even if it made half of what Jurassic World made, I’m sure Universal would still green light another.

At the very least, no more high-heeling traipsing around the jungle for Bryce Dallas Howard.
