Warner Bros. is certainly taking a curious approach to marketing its DC Films in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While we all knew that Justice League was director Zack Snyder’s big follow-up film to the superhero smackdown, we also knew that Warner Bros. had a pair of standalone films hitting theaters before the big superhero team-up—Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman. And yet, in order to qualm fears about the Snyder-helmed Justice League, this past July WB not only unveiled the first teaser trailer for Wonder Woman (as to be expected), but also dropped a lengthy sizzle reel for Justice League. Normally, studios try to market one film at a time, building buzz and paying close attention to that movie before moving onto the next. In the case of Justice League, it appears all bets are off, as we now have our first look at Amber Heard as Aquaman character Mera from the film.

Justice League revolves around Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman attempting to form the titular team in order to battle the villainous alien threat Steppenwolf. Their efforts bring them into contact with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, but Justice League will also serve to further introduce us to Aquaman’s world by also featuring the comics character Mera, played by Heard. While the actress has a much larger role to play in Aquaman, which starts filming next year under the direction of Furious 7 helmer James Wan, she makes her debut in Justice League and her costume is looking mighty formidable.

In the comics, the character of Mera served as the Queen of Atlantis and husband of Aquaman, carrying the ability to form “hard water” objects. One imagines Mera’s role in Justice League involves introducing us to the underwater world of Aquaman, and it’ll certainly be interesting to see how Snyder plans to visualize Atlantis and an entire underwater environment.

For now, this first look at Mera is enticing, if a bit early. Justice League doesn’t open in theaters until November 17, 2017, but it wrapped filming this past weekend and Warner Bros. seems eager to show off its legion of characters. Here’s hoping the film doesn’t feel stale by the time we actually get to see it next year—maybe don't put a big villain reveal in the trailers like with Batman v Superman and Doomsday?
