Rumor: Possible Line-Up, Character Descriptions, and Cameos for JUSTICE LEAGUE

     January 2, 2013

And the Justice League rumors keep flowing.  Last month, we reported that the villain might be Darkseid, and that the storyline could be based on the issues #183 – 185 of Justice League America, which “involves Darkseid planning the destruction of Earth by blasting it with a ray that’ll move Apokolips (Darkseid’s planet) into the Earth’s place.”  Today, a new rumor has emerged about who will be in the League aside from the obvious choices (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern).  The list also includes brief character descriptions and cameos.

Hit the jump for the possible line-up, brief character descriptions, and cameos.  Justice League opens in 2015.

justice league batman supermanFirst, here are the descriptions (via Cosmic Book News):

• Superman is essentially the same character from Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder is consulting regarding the writing of the character.

• Batman: The strategist of the group. Batman doesn’t really want to be involved with these super powered beings he considers too powerful. Easily the most complex written.

• Wonder Woman: She has only been in man’s world a few short months. The Wonder Woman script Michael Goldenberg is developing will be set before the Justice League movie.

• Green Lantern: Will be Ryan Reynold’s character from the Green Lantern movie, but will be freshly written with a more serious tone.

• Flash: The most popular hero in civilian eyes who loves media attention, but when called upon is very serious.

• Martian Manhunter: Alien who has lived on Earth in secret for over a hundred years who has knowledge of Darkseid and his reign.

• Aquaman: Will be the King of Atlantis who has a key role in the film.

• There will also be a heavy military presence in the film which in future rewrites could include characters featured in Man of Steel or even Amanda Waller (Angela Bassett) of which neither are included in the first draft.

• Alfred Pennyworth is in the film in a minor appearance.

• Lois Lane is also in the film in a cameo.

• Darkseid’s Elite will be featured who go up against the Justice League early on in the film.

I find this list dubious for several reasons.  First, I’ve never heard of Cosmic Book News, so I can’t trust them until they have a positive track record (as opposed to a site like Latino Review, whose rumors have turned out to be true).  Secondly, I don’t know how firm this story can possibly be until a director is brought on board.  Will Beale is writing the script, but a director will likely bring their own ideas for the story.  Also, how can Green Lantern be the same character from the movie, but now “freshly written”?  Does that mean it’s the same backstory but a different attitude?

Perhaps this is all true, but for the moment, I would take this rumor with a lot of salt.

Regarding the “heavy military presence”: Perhaps it could be STAR Labs? And it would be cool if Tumblers were part of their official armory.

being an obsessed Flash fan for almost 3 decades, I really hope they go the Barry Allen route and do Flash right. I love Wally West, and I would love to see him on screen, but I hope they go with Barry. However, even if they do go with Barry I’m guessing they are going to give Barry Wally like characteristics or make him a fast talking sarcastic jokester like they love to do in TV, Barry is supposed to be a super laid back relaxed and unbelievably likable guy whose a huge comic book fan and is just super excited to be a super hero and to be surrounded by other superheroes. I hope they include this and get someone who does the role justice, and I REALLY hope they don’t include the “Barry’s mom being murdered” horse shit for Barry’s back story that was created in recent DC comics

    • Shaun

The problem being, Barry’s kind of dull. In my opinion, at least. I’d much rather see Wally as Flash.

Personally, I think this rumor is bogus anyhow. Bringing Ryan Reynolds back as GL (he’d have been better as Wally West) is a bad idea.

      • Mike

Barry is not dull at all, and in the comics Wally is not really that much like his JLU counter part and is kind of just as dull

  • Griz

I know this is just speculation until a director is announced, but if they incorporate GL movie into this AT ALL, then they desrve to get what’s coming to them. That was not only a horrible intro to the character (tried to be tony stark & maverick’s love child) horrible attempt at building the GL corps (barely in the movie) but an even shittier attempt at their own version of nick fury by bringing in amanda waller. Now they want her back? Sheesh.

For me the only thing that matters is who’s gonna be in that Director’s Chair..i dont want this to be like The Avengers..especially with the presence of Batman..i am expecting something dark and deliberate..If the director is able to deliever it then thumbs up from me!! :)

  • Arnyx

Well well well what we’ve here. . Sounds damn promising though. . All major players as well as Darkseid will be there. . They better use earthly battle rather than some cosmic aspect. . :-) hope this movie happens. .

    NO Ryan Reynolds
    NO Ryan Reynolds
    NO Ryan Reynolds

Exactly what I thought, he is very wrong for a ‘serious’ re-write. The guy doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

        You must’ve missed Buried.

      • mattinacan

i didn’t, and he wasn’t believable at all in Buried

Just don’t see this going very well? The description of Flash is pretty much The Human Torch, and if Evans wasn’t already in another universe I could see him being Flash. Find a director who can deliver a great movie that is able to tell every characters story without overshadowing the rest, and introduce the characters WELL beforehand. I might be wrong but since I first read about this I’ve thought Brad Bird for director?

  • Ryan

Barry Allen Flash played by Michael Rosenbaum who did the voice for the Animated Series and I think is a good actor to play the role, although he may be getting a little older. I’ve always imagined The Flash in his early-mid twenties

    • Shaun

You realize Rosenbaum played Wally on the animated JL series? His snarky take on Flash, which was great, is certainly better suited for Wally than the more straight-laced Barry.

Superman learns of a large meteor falling to Earth. He flies over, finds that Batman has beaten him to it. They learn it’s the Martian Manhunter, escaping destruction of Mars by…Darkseid. Darkseid is collecting the life force from all sentient planets so that he can finally resolve the Anti-Life Equation (He needs to have more of a motive than just Earth’s destruction, IMO). The meteor has fallen on a remote island in the Atlantic: Themyscira. Superman and Batman fight, Green Lantern shows up to break it up. A woman is running through cobblestone streets. Her feet stay off the ground longer and longer. She’s been training. She’s got her tiara, cuffs, lasso. She’s flying. First big intra-League fight: Superman-Lantern vs. Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman basically almost beats them both while Batman watches, but Manhunter reads everyone’s mind except Batman’s, tells them to stop.

Superman hears the meteor before he sees it. He walks out, he tracks the meteor across the horizon. he uses his X-ray vision to determine that it’s not a meteor, it’s an escape pod. And some living life form is inside it. The meteor sails over the horizon. Superman is up, up and away.

Flash is running. What do they need Flash for? Flash is fast. He has to find something, somewhere in the world, so, at full power, he runs across every square inch of the Earth in a matter of seconds. What? Hmmm….
In the end, Superman throws the entire Apokolips life-force-draining machinery into the sun. Maybe Batman opens a boom tube to throw Darkseid into the sun.

OR, Batman recruits Flash to talk to the military/air force to not fire missiles at the meteor. But just as he gets there, the missiles are armed and about to launch. So Flash disarms them at super speed, except one that he couldn’t have known about. Redemption for Flash in the climax?
This way, not Superman but initially Green Lantern and Batman fly over separately to investigate meteor. They’re not able to stop the last missile, but Superman arrives to save the day. Green Lantern stops a Superman-Batman showdown, but gets into a fight with Superman, as Batman slinks away to investigate meteor crash site. Now, either Wonder Woman enters Lantern-Superman fight, OR meets Batman at meteor site. Batman/WW Investigate Manhunter, meet cute?

Manhunter informs them of Darkseid’s plan.
    • Superman immediately flies off to intercept Darkseid in space. Darkseid is able to neutralize and imprison Superman using kryptonite.
    ○ This way part of the rest of the gang will have to work to rescue and revive Superman from Darkseid’s ship/base, with Superman returning at the end to knock out Darkseid. (Bat-WW-MM stay on Earth to develop countermeasures using MM’s knowledge of Darkseid’s weapon/force. MM realizes WW likes Bat. Bat does not acknowledge. Meanwhile Lantern and Flash travel to space to rescue Superman.

Possibly in the end Darkseid points his life-sucking machine /death ray at Superman. Machine takes a while because Superman is very powerful. In the nick of time, Flash moves Superman out of the beam’s way. Superman knocks out Darkseid. Flash dead? Maybe he’s just turned into the Speed Force, maybe Speed Force reconstitutes into Flash again in a post credits scene, Bat-MM help do it?

Possible: Darkseid wants WW to join the Furies rather than killing her. This way a boom tube opens on Themyscira where Furies come to fight WW. Meanwhile meteor falls somewhere else where Superman and Lantern go to investigate, perhaps fight? Because Lantern knows the last time someone alive fell to Earth as part of a meteor (Abin Sur). This time it’s Manhunter. Superman and Lantern fight. Manhunter breaks it up by reading their minds “you are on the same side. The real enemy is larger.” etc.

Luthor and Brainiac for the sequel!

    • Dante

Not trying to be purposefully rude but you suck, this has a Power Rangers vibe all over it like I’ve never seen one.

  • Mark

You know this is all made up because noone would ever build a key moment around Aquaman. Aquaman wouldn’t even appear in the film, he’s terrible.

  • James

The only way i would be excited about this is if Ben Affleck decided to direct it. He would bring some serious grit to this movie which is exactly what it needs.

  • ScottX

Getting Ryan Raynolds’ Green Lantern into this is a great idea. Marvel should follow that lead and include Nick Cage’s Ghost Rider in The Avengers 2.
And why people want it to be so gritty and stuff, it’s JLA.

    • Shaun

You really had me going there for a minute.

      Wait. You’re SERIOUS?

  • Pubes

Are DC deliberately not going to do origin movies for Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman & Martian Manhunter, so people don’t say it’s a copying the Avengers….
They need to do origins movies for at least WW & The Flash!!!
What’s the rush with the JL movie? Take some time…..with it….
    2013: Man of Steel
    2014: Wonder Woman
2015: The Flash (March) Batman reboot ( July)
2016: Green Lantern reboot (March) Justice League movie (July)

  • Ramone

You make a sound point, Pubes.

  • Squads Reveal Zen

Goldberg, its actually Will Beall who is writing the script. Not will Beale, who was a writer in the 1930s. Check the accuracy of your stories before posting them or you might end up being the butt of what few jokes are left to make on this website.

  • Dante

Things were looking good in the Superman front till they decided to mix him with the wrong people , aka to put him in this movie, what I would do in the suits place is, having eliminated mimicking Marvel’s build up plan, is 1 to delay the release date in order to properly work the fracking script, 2 let’s face it, Welling has already a built fan base across the globe, getting him would definitely help my movie’s numbers, if they’re gonna “freshly rewrite” Green Lantern, what the frack, just do the same with Welling and make his Superman a little more kickass than in Smallville, 3 one of the virtues of Batman Begins it’s the quality of its cast and pacing, so I would get some people who can act and I would do my best to keep the final product from resembling a Power Rangers movie and everything that is implied.

  • sense 11

Can you imagine if they get Christian Bale to be Batman
would that be too much to ask of this Universe,
    perhaps it is

    • Shaun

As much as I’d like to see Bale return, and perhaps have Bruce change his mind about playing dead, fleeing to Europe, and retiring from being Batman too (can you tell I didn’t like TDKR?), he’s not going to do it.

  • Shaun

Goldberg, this supposed link to “Cosmic Book News” goes to the earlier Collider rumor regarding the JLA script, not to Cosmic Book News.

I thought maybe you were confusing that name with COMIC Book News, the little newspaper that you’d get with your books at the comic shop each week (Is that still being made? I haven’t been to a comic shop in a few years), but apparently the site really exists:

ryan reynolds green lantern was not great but not bad…Could have been a helleuva lot better yes! The directors the key!! The costume was kinda lame so coould be better. Ryan can be too silly for serious movies or hero movies but look at safehouse or amityville remake he can be serious if nobody writes him silly shit to do!!! so keep him, it all depends on the director and story by the looks of man of steel it should be good, justice league. Although they dont need to make every dc hero dark!!! Not every one is batman, thats what was good about dc different heroes and lots of stories..I think they should even keep christan bale as batman…wouldnt it be funny i dc and warner bros had us all fooled all this time and have a plan and is keeping secrets!! whoa!!! what a concept not one for fanboys or internet jocks!
