With filming now underway, Justice League is continuing to ramp up its casting. We previously reported that J.K. Simmons was playing the role of Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming superhero film, and now another talented actor is signing on to play a good guy.

According to THR, Willem Dafoe is “playing a good guy in a role that will see him appear in both parts of the JL movies. Details of his character, however, are being kept under lock and key.” Naturally, this kick starts the speculation machine, but I’m left to wonder how much it will really matter. How much of Batman v Superman was made better because you didn’t know the specifics of Holly Hunter’s character? I’m not saying you need to tell everyone the character’s entire arc, but sometimes this really does all seem to be secrecy for secrecy’s sake.

I would say, “At least they’re getting a talented actor,” but Holly Hunter and Scoot McNairy are talented too, and they were completely wasted in Batman v Superman. While it’s nice that Justice League can assemble an outstanding cast of actors, the story matters most, and I’m just hoping that Zack Snyder and company can course correct.

Dafoe will next be seen in the fantasy film The Great Wall alongside Matt Damon. Justice League: Part One opens November 17, 2017. Justice League: Part Two opens June 14, 2019.  The films also star Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, and Ray Fisher.
