Zack Snyder Will Be Asked to Direct JUSTICE LEAGUE if MAN OF STEEL Is a Success; Director Talks Backlash and 3D

Much is riding on the success of this summer’s Man of Steel.  Not only is Warner Bros. hoping the film launches a new Superman franchise, but it is also the key to moving forward with other DC properties in the wake of Marvel’s immense success (ie. The Avengers grossing $1.5 billion).  The early buzz on Man of Steel is incredibly positive and the film’s latest trailer was rather remarkable, so expectations are quite high.  We know that Warner Bros. is developing a Justice League film with a potential 2015 release date, but further details about the pic have been rather unclear.

In a new interview with director Zack Snyder, though, it was revealed that the current plan is to ask Snyder to helm Justice League should Man of Steel take off.  Hit the jump for more.

zack-snyder-justice-leagueThe latest issue of Empire is all about Man of Steel, and within the cover story is confirmation that Snyder will likely be courted for the Justice League gig (via JoBlo):

“Warner Bros.’ long-term view has been revised to embrace this new vision, just as the Dark Knight films resisted the commodification of Marvel. Whether we get a Justice League, they say, depends on Man of Steel. If we do, they say, Zack Snyder will be asked to direct.”

It’s not exactly a shock that Snyder would be asked to usher in DC’s version of The Avengers since he’s the one who was tasked with kicking off this potential series of films in the first place, and his Man of Steel sets the tone for the other DC superhero movies going forward.  Whether he’ll accept the offer is unclear, but he did say that Man of Steel wasn’t necessarily designed as a one-time thing:

“We didn’t design the movie like Batman, but I don’t think anybody would say that you design a Superman movie as a one-off.”

man-of-steel-superman-henry-cavillAs for whether it’s a success or not, Snyder confirmed that the theatrical release of Man of Steel will run 2 hours and 28 minutes and is, for all intents and purposes, the director’s cut:

“I have a hard time having perspective, but I have to say that it is everything that I could have hoped for. Touch wood that I am not insane, but it feels really good.”

There was quite a passionate reaction from Superman fans when Snyder was announced as the director of Man of Steel, both positive and negative.  He touched a bit on the backlash during the interview:

“For me it is like, ‘Whatever.’ I don’t know what they really want, so it is impossible to really take that with anything but a grain of salt. Otherwise you would do nothing. They want the underwear! ‘Do you really?’”

man-of-steel-henry-cavillThe filmmaker also talked about how Man of Steel relates to his take on Watchmen:

“I was really glad I could do it in that order.” Snyder means Watchmen first, Man Of Steel afterwards. “The irony of Superman is that it is not ironic. The irony of Watchmen is that the whole thing is ironic.”

Finally, while Man of Steel is being released in 3D, Snyder did not shoot the film with 3D cameras.  The decision to post-convert came after the fact, and the director noted that 3D is not the “definitive” format in which to see the pic, saying that it’s basically just a choice:

“By the way, we like to think that the 3D is just another way of seeing the movie. It is not Superman 3D, it is Man Of Steel, available in 3D.”

As the marketing campaign for Man of Steel ramps up in the coming weeks, we should be hearing much more from Snyder about the film.  Click here to catch up on all of our previous coverage, or peruse the recent links below:

I would be totally happy with him doing Justice League but this summer its all about Man of Steel

    • Transmitte

And Wolverine and Iron Man and..

I think we’re going to have a good summer of heroes to enjoy.

      • Joseph M

‘Wolverine’ has to be exceptional, because it feels like it’s an overdone franchise. Iron Man reached perfection after the first one. Number 2 was a farce. Number 3, apart from Downey looking like he just wants to enjoy old age with a fat bank balance, looks worryingly jingoistic.
This summer is about Man Of Steel and Star Trek.

      • CaptainCheadle

“Worryingly jingoistic”? What the fuck does that even mean? Stop trying so hard.

      • Joseph M

Was I trying hard? It means God bless America, it’s glorious military killin’ and invadin’ machine and the immortal soul of John ‘Duke’ Wayne. It’s cool to join the army, kill Muslims and get your balls blown-off for Obama, Haliburton and Exxon, Patriot Iron Man says so.
That’s what trying too hard looks like. Prefer the condensed version?

      • La Puta Saralegui

Worryingly jingoistic? I think it means “worryingly jingoistic”
Nobody’s trying hard, but maybe you should

      • Daniel

The definition of jingoism is basically extreme patriotism by way of extreme foreign policy. Do yourself a favor and use a dictionary instead of a thesaurus.

      • Shaun

Star Trek? Star Trek in name only… The first Abrams one had a terrible script, some very hit and miss casting, and was more of a Star Wars than Star Trek.

Now the new one has premiered (in Australia) and I suspect a lot of people are going to be disappointed if the rumors are true. Looks like it’s going to be little more than a mindless action flick that (ahem) borrows heavily from a certain beloved film about three decades earlier.

Anyhow, bring on Iron Man and Man of Steel! Hopefully Wolverine will be good too.

      • Johnny kockrann

        “Downey looks worriyingly jigoistic”

War Machine aka Jim “Rhodey” Rhodes aka Don Cheadle is in the Iron Patriot armor not Downey Aka Tony Stark.

        Should have tried harder asshole.

      • Gögi

hey dumbass, it’s “worringly Djangoistic”. the “d” is silent when pronounced, but it’s still there when you spell it out.

        dumbass.

      • PhillB

        That typo made my day.

Does anybody need a toke from this joint.

      Apart from badass internet name-callers…
Johnny, doesn’t really matter what character is in the suit, the suit is in the film. Wow.
Gogi, apart from your bad spelling I don’t have a clue where the Django reference applies.
Daniel, c’mon, you must be smarter than this.
La Puta – I think you’re going for a stone cold putdown there, but…it kinda pissed itself and went home.
And guys, I won’t call you names. I do that to faces, in the flesh, not on the internet. Lulz, that was fun.
(Shaun, good points. I hope you’re right).

Remember that Green Lantern was originally supposed to launch the line of pics leading up to Justice League.

Is Green Lantern even part of the “canon” now? Because they might just be better off getting a new GL, and completely re-working how they visualize Oa, the lantern costumes, and all the rest of it.

    • Rich woa

      John Stewart!

      • dan

        Idris Elba

      • Goop

        Common!

      • Adam

Long shot, but i have wanted Michael Jai White to play him ever since i first started watching Justice League, the animated series. Plus, i think its sad that he made Spawn (which i love) back when effects-heavy superhero films hadn’t quite ironed out all the wrinkles yet. But having a guy who can bring his imagination to life would be a great way to bring the character of Al Simmons some justice, even if you give him a green power ring and call him “John Sterwart”

      • Strong Enough

omg every time their is a black superhero to fill you fanboys say Michael jai White. their are other black people out thee you know!

  • scott

With amazing box office hits like “Rise of the Gaurdians” and “Sucker Punch” under his belt I think he’s sure as hell earned it.

    • scott

oh my mistake I meant Legends of the Gaurdians

      • scott

        *Guardians*

wow took you 3 attempts to make that lame joke? please go ahead and kill yourself.

        Oh be nice.

  • Tom

    Two things Adam;

    1. Re-reading the actual text from the article, Snyder never confirms he will be asked. That’s the Empire author postulating about WB rumors.

    2. Where was 2 hours 28 minutes confirmed? It says 2 hours 10 minutes at one point in the article.

    • Tom
    • Clark Odinson Kent

Heck, I hope the movie is 3 hours long!

      • Joe

I think the run-time is good for those groaners (i.e. critics) who complain that the exposition in such flicks is too long. So Zack has delivered a compact story with drama and action. Am sure the critics would find something else to harp on.

As for me, I’d take a 3 hours Superman flick anyday.

    Lol at the comments above.

LMMFAO AT THE FAN-BOY PANIC! You hear one thing and think
It’s confirmed or you say it ruined! Look they already said it IF Superman
Is a success he would direct! You won’t know till then! And the ones
that believe Snyder is a bad choice then who? He has more experience with action
and storylines that are odd but entertaining. Just like that Nolan guy your mad
at for quitting Batman (You Know When Say His Name For Directing All Films)He chose
Snyder along with the studio! You have a say but not till after the film comes out
so chill till 2015 and just don’t go and complain about everybody who enjoyed the film!

    • Nate

      That’s a weird poem.

  • Clark Odinson Kent

    LOLOL

I just want to say that I’m kinda sad John Williams isn’t bad but excited that Hans Zimmer is composing this movie’s score. There better be some actual melody and themes in the score and not just repetitive percussion like his Batman Begins and Dark Knight scores….ugh…

    • Joseph M

You’re right. Zimmer’s brilliant at atmospherics, but he relies a lot on chords and big drums. Good for a film like Batman, but Superman should have a theme. John Williams, but less of the high school brass band influences. I can think of a lot of good Zimmer scores, but he’s weak when it comes to memorable melodies. I guess it’ll please the Nolanites.

      • Lance

The Nolanites are the most demanding and have the best taste, so if Zimmer gets them he gets everybody else.

And Zimmer will deliver the goods, I have no doubt.

      • Klaus

        Elfman any day

      • LOL

“The Nolanites are the most demanding and have the best taste” LOL .
Nolanites didn’t openly deride Dark Knight Rises, inarguable one of the worst recent releases, so, no, they ain’t got good taste. LOL.

  • Jesus

“Touch wood that I am not insane, but it feels really good.” – I’m sorry but did he just mangle “knock on wood” into an unintentional hard-on joke?

    • Da realness

Have you seen how homerotic Superman’s suit is? His comments are entirely intentional

  • Pingback: Zack Snyder likely to direct 'Justice League' if 'Man of Steel' is a success - Batman News

  • 912918

“Touch wood” is an acceptable variant of “knock on wood.” But that won’t stop you from snickering like an 8th grader, and start accusing everyone of being gay while you text naked photos of yourself to some dudes you just met at the Y, will it?

    • Jesus

You realize, don’t you, that you’re the one who inferred it to be a joke about being gay? If anything I’d perceived it to be an unfortunate choice of words that cumulated in a masturbation joke. What’s worse is you then decided to get real specific about how you imagine it would go down. This all suggests far more about you than it does me. At worst I’m unaware “touch wood” is the British take on “knock on wood” and a little immature, at worst you’re the guy struggling with his own sexuality and so pounces on anything you perceive to be an inference of homosexuality in others’ statements in internet comment sections. Get over yourself, and if you feel the temptation to hook up in Y bathrooms and it repulses you so, just buy a stationary bike and quit projecting it onto others out of frustration. You headcase.

      • Gögi

        just came. thanks guys.

      • Jesus

        That’s what Jesus does best.

      • DG

        At worst.

  • PhillB

As if Zack Snyder were any close as good as Josh Whedon. Josh is master of fanboys and he knows what he does. Better drop those Justice League plans before they end up with a sub-par product, and a cash leak.

  • patuniverse.com

The amount of shit talking that goes on before the release of a movie is humorous lol. People need to just be quiet and reserve judgement AFTER the movie comes out and it’s been seen by the general public.

  • The Observer

Just now realizing that Danny Carey (tool) and 12 other drummers make up the percussion for the new theme. Incredible.

  • Klaus

thank you all for the craziest bunch of comments i’ve read all week. collider should skip the articles and jump directly to the wisecracks… touch woody… really, just touch it
