Teen phenom Justin Bieber has been talking up a semi-autobiographical movie for some time now, but things got real when Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) entered negotiations to direct. According to Deadline, Paramount has already set February 11, 2011 (Valentine’s Day weekend) for the 3D release. Bieber will play himself in the untitled biopic, which will feature excerpts from his current tour. The singer’s discovery is a story suited for the movies: the young Canadian started posting videos of his music to Youtube at the age of twelve. There, a former So So Def exec spotted him, got him in touch with Usher, and now Bieber is the idol of millions.
Bieber seems to be on the right track, in that you need to make sure “winner” follows “Oscar” when choosing a director for your musical biopic. Eminem’s 8 Mile, directed by Oscar-winner Curtis Hanson: respectable. 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’, directed by six-time Oscar-nominee Jim Sheridan: shite.
