Justin Theroux and Will Arnett Speed Up and Reverse Direction for Non-Videogame Adaptation SPACE INVADERS

Iron Man 2 and Tropic Thunder writer Justin Theroux is penning a new draft of Space Invaders–not based on the video game. The original spec by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger is about an astronaut who goes into space to catch his girlfriend in the act of cheating on him with a fellow astronaut. Even better: Will Arnett is attached to star!  Get some of the space madness along with more details about the project after the jump.

The rom-com is being set up for Fox after the collapse of Fox Atomic, with Davis Entertainment (A Perfect Getaway, Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem) on board to produce. Theroux, an actor-turned-screenwriter, has a couple other projects on his plate including a comedy about air guitar competitions, which he may also direct according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Theroux also wrote the upcoming Danny McBride/James Franco medieval-stoner-comedy Your Highness.

I don’t question that Space Invaders a funny premise (we all certainly got a good laugh when that crazy astronaut lady drove across the country to kidnap the girlfriend of another astronaut), but Davis Entertainment doesn’t exactly have the best track record. In a perfect world, Arnett will salvage whatever’s thrown at him, but that hasn’t always been the case in the past (see: The Brothers Solomon, Let’s Go to Prison).
