Justin Timberlake Offered Co-Lead in the Coen Bros.’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

     October 29, 2011

Justin Timberlake is shaping up to be quite the actor. After earning high praise for his dramatic turn in David Fincher’s The Social Network, it appears that the actor may be set to work with another master filmmaker. Make that two master filmmakers, actually. Timberlake has been offered the co-lead role in the next film from Joel and Ethan Coen, Inside Llewyn Davis. The film centers on the 1960s folk music scene in New York, so it’s a role that hits all the right notes (zing!) for Timberlake. Drive’s Oscar Isaac has already landed one of the lead roles, as has talented actress Carey Mulligan. Hit the jump for more, including who each actor is poised to play.

justin-timberlake-imageVariety reports that Isaac will be playing the title role, a struggling folk musician born and bred in Queens, and Timberlake has been offered the role of another folk musician who’s married to Mulligan’s character. Timberlake seemed good enough in films like Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan, but it was his turn in The Social Network that caught my eye. He proved himself quite the dramatic talent, and he’s really come into his own as of late with memorable leading roles in films like Friends with Benefits and In Time (his charisma was one of the saving graces of the latter).

One has to assume that Timberlake will jump at the chance to work for the Coen bros., and I’m hoping he takes the role as I find it to be an inspired choice. Scott Rudin, who produced the Coens’ No Country for Old Men and True Grit, as well as The Social Network, is onboard to produce what’s shaping up to be one of my most anticipated pics of 2012.

Also, if you missed Timberlake on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon doing “The History of Rap 3″ on Friday, I urge you to take a gander:

I would expect mumford and sons to be involved somehow, for the fact that its a folk music pic as well as the fact that carey mulligan is engaged to the lead singer.

MEMO TO COEN BROTHERS…….NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO among many movie-goers…..timberlake is seen as feather-weight and quite annoying…i’m speaking for myself and maybe 20 of my friends all around 25….he holds no credibility….but hey…..maybe we’re in the minority…but i don’t think so

    • Strong Enough

you are in the minority. dude is the new leonardo

  • I cry u smile

The coen brothers are to talented to waste their time on this upcmoing movies and Timberlake… the guy can’t act for shitt he’s just a wet dream for teen girls

  • Corey

It’s amazing to me how people still question if timberlake can act or not face it the guy can act. We have what 4 films with decent to outstanding performances from him. Alpha dog, black snake moan, social network and now friends with benefits. If you hate the fact that he did that faggy boyband shit from the late 90′s then thats on you. This almost reminds me how people kept saying leo was a shit actor because he did hearthrob roles in titantic and romeo and juliet. It’s getting annoying the guy can act, it’s not the end of the world, im sure timberlake owuld have to audition or screentest before they actually hand him the role. But even then he’s shown with the right script and the right director he can do good work so i dont see what the problem is? And the ultimate achievement for a actor in my opinion is being able to take a weak script and a cliched premise and turn it into something of actual substance and thats what he and mila kunis did in friends with benefits. We as movie goers need to face the facts that this kid has star potential, is he there yet? I dont think so, but is he 10 times better then pattinson, efron, lautner, Absolutely.

This guy is an awefull actor with his annoying monotone high pitched squeaky voice. In Alpha Dogs he was surrounded by good actors like Anton Yelchin, Emile Hirsch, and Ben Foster making Timberlake look terrible … Again in The Social Network his acting looked more like crap because he was surrounded by even more outstanding actors like Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield.

The 3 actors you listed Pattinson, Efron, and Lautner can actually act circles around the squeaky monotone Timberlake. He needs to go back making bad music. To even compare Timberlake to Leo DiCaprio is a joke. Timberlake isn’t on the same planet when it comes to acting.

Timberlake single handedly killed In Time with his crap acting. Kartheiser, Murphy, and even Toby Hemingway made him look so bad. Timberlake just can’t pull off an action star role at all.

And for the record only asshole losers still use the word “fag”. Time to get a life and move out of your mom’s basement, dude.

Timberlake hasn’t had “decent to outstanding” performances in any of the films he’s been in; that’s a matter of opinion. What’s a matter of FACT is that he’s consistently and unwaveringly the least impressive part of any production he’s involved in. He is what he is: stunt-casting by unmotivated producers who somehow equate his Twitter popularity with box-office success, despite a 100% track-record that proves otherwise.

Not saying he’s not a great musician (he probably is), but as a screen presence he lacks that certain ‘oomph’ and presence that’s required to draw in audiences. He essentially plays himself in every role, which is fine if you like his stock acting style. Judging from the sub-par and disappointing box-office takes where’s he’s been closer to being the star, I think audiences agree.

This week’s In Time will prove that, too, that he’s clearly not bringing in anyone to see ‘him’ act. If anything, his presence is causing people to stay home instead. But is this based on prejudice because of his N*SYNC days, or because – let’s be honest – he’s just not that charismatic or good an actor? I think it’s the latter, and as much as I imagine he wants to be a movie star, it’s just not going to happen.

If you can’t see the irony in your matter of FACT statement, I’m afraid I’ll have to disregard your otherwise readable post.

I think the Coen’s were feeling a little too much at ease, a little under-challenged by a stellar script, easy financing, a perfect cast that came together without effort, that they decided to make things interesting, to see if anyone really can give a poor performance in a film they direct. Hence, Timberlake.

Or, realistically, we might consider that Timberlake can undeniably sing like an angel and is reportedly very handy with a guitar, arguably a more basic requirement for a role in this movie about musicians than a wide acting range. Timberlake didn’t ruin Social Network, and he won’t ruin this.

Sorry, Justin fans….This kid is an awful actor. Don’t like his girlish singing and dancing either. The music he’s made is throw-away pop trash. He is such a spoiled, manufactured “talent”. Get a clue, when your career is built on the bad taste of countless tasteless teen girls, you probably suck. And he does. I’m not interested in seeing him in movies…been sick of him for many years now. And let’s be honest….he’s f—ing ugly.

    • JEN

AGREED!! been sick of him since britney left his ugly ass!

  • JEN

First I want to point this out, and i’m sorry for bringing up britney and christina but I have to. He talked shit about Britneys acting when she did crossroads and after seeing him act I just want to slap him in the face.Everyone shits on britney, mariah and christina for their horrible acting and he deserves to be in that group too! He’s ok looking(no brad pitt), he sings good but better is out there, hes an ok performer but not like he isnt doing anything MJ didnt do in the 80′s and lets face it he can never rely on himself or his “talent” for success. When he started his solo career he used britney for publicity and still talks about her right before every album, song or movie is released when probably shes forgotten who he is. And his movies are only successful because he is always with an ensemble cast.
