Star Trek‘s J.J. Abrams has wisely added Trek alum Karl Urban and Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly to the cast of his Fox pilot. The new series, called Human, is described as an action-packed buddy cop show set in a future where all LAPD officers are being partnered up with highly evolved human-like androids.  TV Line reports that Urban will play a character named John Kennex, a respected police officer who has shut down emotionally after a tragic mission left him critically injured. Hit the jump to find out more casting news for Human.

minka-kelly-humanThe Wrap reports that Minka Kelly will play a character named Valerie Stahl, described as a uniformed cop with a strong moral compass who believes the best of people.

Also joining the cast is Common Law‘s Michael Ealy who will play Dorian, an android detective paired up with Urban’s Kennex who, ironically, has a better grasp of humanity than his human partner. Lili Taylor (Six Feet Under) will play Maldonado, an ambitious and determined police captain who is willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.

Michael Irby (The Unit) and Mackenzie Crook (Pirates of the Caribbean) have been added to the cast as well.

For the series, Abrams will be re-teaming with Fringe writer/executive producer J.H. Wyman, who is writing the script and also acting as executive producer along with Abrams and Bryan Burk. Directing the pilot is Brad Anderson (The Machinist).

With a producer like Abrams at the helm and stars such as Urban, Ealy, Kelly and Taylor in front of the camera, this sounds like one pilot that may actually make it to series. But even the best ideas can end up never seeing the light of a TV screen, so time will tell if Human will be a hit or a miss.

What do you think of the latest casting news for Human? Do you think that adding names like Karl Urban and Minka Kelly will guarantee its success?

I don’t understand why all of JJ Abrams shows are still being buzzed about. Hasn’t his last few shows been duds?

    • Doug

Bad Robot produces Person of Interest, which is doing great currently. I know Alcatraz tanked, though.

    • Andrew from Troy

Person of Interest and Revolution were duds?

      • Great white hype

Seems like he’s 60/40. He did Alias, Felicity, Lost, Fringe, Person of Interest, and Revolution. Those did or are doing well. He also did What About Brian, Six Degrees, Undercovers, & Alcatraz. Those didn’t do so well.

Just what we need. Another procedural cop show with a twist.

  • Dredd

Would like ti see Urban return as Dredd for a sequel! Infact, Dredd would make a perfect big budget tv show in the style of the movie. Over 30 years worth of great comics to draw stories from.

  • The Exploiter

There are two kinds of J.J. Abrams news. !!!!!!!!!! news (news about his movies) and ZZZZZ news (news about his the TV shows he produces).

As much as I like Urban this still has the whiff of Mac and CHEESE about it

  • Korvac

So this is basically Isaac Asimov’s ‘The Caves of Steel’ except not?
