Karl Urban to Play JUDGE DREDD?

by     Posted 4 years, 42 days ago

The last time we heard about the long-in-the-works Judge Dredd reboot, filming was set to begin later on this year with Pete Travis (Vantage Point) attached to direct the 3D film with a screenplay by Alex Garland (28 Days Later).  With filming set to begin soon, it was only a matter of time until we found out who would don the iconic visor.  Now, according to the latest rumor Karl Urban (Star Trek) is going to be offered the lead in the film. More after the jump.

According to Bleeding Cool, Karl Urban will be offered the role of Judge Dredd.   However, there is a catch.  Supposedly, in this planned version Judge Dredd will never take off his helmet just like in the comic book.  This means that we might be seeing a lot of Karl Urban’s chin in 3D when the film hits theaters sometime next year or in 2012.

For more about Judge Dredd, Wikipedia tells us that “Dredd is a law enforcement officer in a violent city of the future where uniformed Judges combine the powers of police, judge, jury and executioner. Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot.”

First.. Clint Eastwood is the only actor good enough to do Dred justice but now i think he is to old. This guy just doesn't have the chin for Dred.

Shoulda been RON PERLMAN for Dredd !
    Shame Clint is out.

He never does remove his helmet in the script. It is a good action flick and Urban will rock. He has a female 'trainee' for the entire movie so will be interesting to see who they cast for her. xx

I think this story outline sounds pretty awful.

The plot sounds like a rip-off of Escape From New York. Dredd has to find a perp, escape block before the gangs and warlord kills him. That's more or less identical to Escape From New York. That was a great film back in its day but Dredd doesn't need to copy that.

Slo-mo sounds like bullet time from The Matrix. Again, rip-off.

Ma-Ma sounds a terrible name for the villain. The Dredd comic strip has had great bad guy names: Judge Death, Father Earth, The Angel Gang, Sabbat, Orlok the assassin, Trapper Hag etc. But the main perp in the film is called Ma-Ma. Is this some bad joke?

We've also got the comments “video game simplistic” and “generic.” Hardly positive terms! Who knows, maybe the action will be good but the storyline sounds very unoriginal and not worthy of Dredd. I'd like to see something more original like Dredd's Graveyard Shift story or The Hunter's Club. That would be amazing.

I don't think the writer, Alex Garland, has grasped the potential of Dredd's world.
