Here’s today’s latest casting news:
- Katie Holmes (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark) will join Phillip Noyce’s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver, starring Jess Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard and Brenton Thwaites.
- Rosario Dawson (Trance) is in talks to join Aaron Eckhart in Brad Peyton’s micro-budget horror picture, Incarnate, from Blumhouse Productions.
- Saxon Sharbino (I Spit on Your Grave) has joined Gil Kenan’s Poltergeist film, starring Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt. [Update: Jane Adams (Hung) has also joined the film.]
- Natalie Martinez (Under the Dome) has landed a lead role in Sean Parker’s thriller, Home Invasion.

First up from Heat Vision is word that Holmes will join The Giver, a story in which a young boy (Thwaites) is selected to be the receiver of memories from the title character (Bridges), memories from a time before society’s dedication to “sameness”. “Holmes will play Thwaites’ mother, a strict obeyer of the laws that govern what is described as an antiseptic society.”
Heat Vision also reports that Dawson is in negotiations to join Eckhart in Incarnate, which chronicles “an unconventional exorcist who can tap into the subconscious of the possessed who meets his match when a 9-year-old boy is possessed by a demon from his past”. There is no information as to Dawson’s intended character at this moment, though that may change soon as the picture is scheduled to shoot in Los Angeles this November.
THR reports on an addition to the Bowen family in Poltergeist. Sharbino will play 16-year-old Kendra, the oldest of the three children. “A typical teen, isolating herself from her family to focus on her friendships, … she realizes that her new home feeds on the isolation of others, [and] she must band together with her family to help save her youngest sibling … The story follows the Bowens as their home is terrorized and their youngest child goes missing when a supernatural force takes over.” [Update: Heat Vision also reports that Adams will play “a parapsychologist called in to help the family find their daughter and identify the supernatural forces at work in their home.”]
Finally, Heat Vision reports that Martinez will lead Home Invasion. She’ll join join Bella Thorne (Shake It Up) in the story that focuses on “a family imprisoned in their own home by intruders who play a life and death game in which the mysterious rules become clear as the night unfolds.” Martinez will play Thorne’s “strong-willed stepmother who is determined to keep her new family intact as the night’s horrific events unfold.” Home Invasion is aiming for a production start in Vancouver later this fall.
