A couple weeks ago, it was reported that Kevin Costner was being considered for a key role in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. Well now Warner Bros. has confirmed that the actor has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s adopted father. Henry Cavill is poised to play the Man of Steel, and Diane Lane recently joined the cast as Kent’s adopted mother, Martha. Regarding Costner’s addition to the cast, Snyder had this to say:

“Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman.  Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”

It looks like casting is ramping up on the film, so expect more names announced in the coming weeks. Yesterday, Zack Snyder spoke a bit about the project, saying that this flick will assume “there’s been no other Superman movies.” The currently untitled Superman reboot, produced by Christopher Nolan, is set to start filming soon for a December 2012 release. KEVIN COSTNER CAST AS JONATHAN KENT IN WARNER BROS. PICTURES’

AND LEGENDARY PICTURES’ UPCOMING SUPERMAN MOVIE

BURBANK, CA, March 17, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent, the father who raised Clark Kent as his own son, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder stated, “Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman.  Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”

Costner will star alongside Diane Lane, who plays his wife, Martha, and the film’s star, Henry Cavill, who will play the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Costner most recently starred in 2010’s “The Company Men,” and is currently in development on the comedy “The One.”  He has won two Academy Awards®, for producing and directing the epic “Dances with Wolves,” also garnering a nomination for Best Actor.  He has also starred in a wide range of memorable films, including “The Untouchables,” “No Way Out,” “Bull Durham,” “Field of Dreams,” “JFK,” “The Bodyguard,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Tin Cup” and “Swing Vote,” to name a few.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film.  The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan.  Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

The new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

  1. Hope the role is deserving of Costner’s undervalued talents. He’ll be a great choice if Snyder gives him his due.

    • I think costner will be good in this small role, but I believe he is extremely overvalued as an actor. Every movie he has ever played as a serious star has made me cringe (Robin Hood especially).

      • I agree with you in that he will be a good fit for this role but Costner is still amusing to watch..

Unless it is swing vote, that was a dumbass movie. I like how they added that to his list of movies, what a shame..

but other than that I think he will be a great addition and probably wont be anything too major..

I hear SUCKERPUNCH has not been received well so I am crossing my fingers for this movie.

  2. Great News!!! it seems that the parents are a very important part of this story, and thats the wait i have alway wanted a Supes movie, hope they go somehow close to the Byrne era!….

  3. Can’t wait to see this one, I always wondered about the origin of Superman it will be great to see that story finally told.

In all seriousness though I think Costner is going to make a great Pa Kent.

  4. This is just amazing. I’m just checking up Collider in order to get news about Superman and Batman.

This is looking great by now. Now I can rest a bit on Supes.. and wonder who’s the main baddie in TDKR (.. there has to be someone else besides Catwoman and Baine..)

    (?)

  5. Best way to save is called collective buying!!! search online for “Printapons” every day a local business will be featured and prices will be discounted upto 90% off

  6. As much as I appreciate Zack Snyder and his work on 300(yes it was a little homoerotic), his love letter to George Romero Dawn of the Dead, and especially Watchmen which I fucking loved I find myself pessimistic towards any potential for a rushed Super-Man film. I understand the gripes people had towards Super-Man Returns a few years back but aside from another Luthor real estate scheme, and the silly “super-son” idea you couldn’t have asked for a better Supes film.

As for Kevin Costner any of his career woes have nothing to do with him being “under-valued”, and he has only himself to blame. The guy hadn’t picked a decent role for around 10 years now. There was a time when he was a well respected(god only knows why) actor, and director. I still remember having to suffer through his films as a kid because my dad was a fan of his work. Personally I’ll give him credit for JFK but even Wayne Knight gave an Oscar worthy performance in that.

    • It’s “Superman” not “Super-Man.”

And just to clarify another matter, it’s “Spider-Man,” not “Spiderman.”
