Marvel President Kevin Feige Talks Sequels; Reveals Two Unannounced Films in Development

     May 14, 2012

If smashing the opening weekend record by nearly $40 million wasn’t enough to convince you that The Avengers is a juggernaut hit, surely the film crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide in a mere 19 days sealed the deal.  Naturally, all eyes are now on what Marvel Studios has coming up.  Iron Man 3 begins production later this month, and we know that Thor 2 is set to shoot later this year followed by Captain America 2.  Obviously The Avengers 2 will be coming down the line at some point, but I’d imagine the earliest we could see it in theaters would be 2015.  There’s a May 2014 release date slotted for a currently unannounced Marvel pic, but Marvel Studios president recently revealed that there are actually two unnamed films currently in development.  Hit the jump for more.

kevin_feige_iron_man_2_movie_image_set_photo_01First off, here’s a refresher of Marvel’s release schedule that’s been announced thus far:

  • Iron Man 3 on May 3rd, 2013
  • Thor 2 on November 15th, 2013
  • Captain America 2 on April 4th, 2014
  • Untitled Marvel Movie #1 on May 16th, 2014

Feige recently sat down with Bloomberg to talk about the studio’s future, and here’s the quote of interest (via THR) followed by the actual video:

“We want to do two films a year. Avengers is our only film this year, but in a week and a half we begin filming Iron Man 3. By the end of the summer we’ll be working on the next Thor film, early next year the next Captain America film. Those are the three we’ve announced so far; we’ve got two beyond that that we haven’t announced yet, but we’re working on.”

kevin_feigeObviously the addition of another unannounced film in development is interesting, but it’s also noteworthy that Marvel is now pushing to release two films a year.  We had the one-two punch of Thor and Captain America last year, and it appears that that kind of release strategy is Marvel’s goal for the foreseeable future.

Now, on to that other unannounced project.  Rumors have swirled that Untitled Marvel Movie #1 would either be the long-in-development Ant-Man or a Guardians of the Galaxy film.  We know that Edgar Wright has been working on Ant-Man for some time now, and Feige recently told Steve that we should be paying close attention to Wright’s tweets in the coming months for news on that project.  Wright just committed to directing the third entry in his “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy” (which includes Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) The World’s End this September with Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, so hopes that he would make Ant-Man his next film seem to have been dashed.

However, news of The World’s End came with a targeted release date of Spring 2013, so Wright could conceivable move right into Ant-Man next spring/early summer to meet a 2014 release date.  He’s also developing an adaptation of The Night Stalker with Johnny Depp, but there’s no word on how soon that could be going into production; Depp’s a fairly busy guy.

Feige has also been talking up a Guardians of the Galaxy film lately, and with the introduction of a cosmic villain in the credits sequence of The Avengers, I wouldn’t be shocked if Marvel was planning on moving things off of Earth for a Guardians film in the near-future.  It’s also possible that the two “secret” films that Feige referenced are neither Ant-Man nor Guardians of the Galaxy.  The Marvel president has also mentioned The Inhumans and Doctor Strange as possible projects, there’s the possibility of another Hulk movie, and the studio has a ridiculous number of options when it comes to source material.  Hopefully one or both of these two “in development” projects will be announced before or at this summer’s Comic-Con, but what about you, fine readers?  What do you think the studio has planned for the next few years?

The Ant Man script was co-written by Joe Cornish who directed Attack the Block.

Maybe he’s going to direct it

  • Spock Jenkins

Now that BLADE is back in the Marvel Studios movie fold – and in fact, as Blade was the first successful Marvel Movie character – I hope they can bring him back to the big screen in a big way.

(His monster-fighting skills would have been handy against the Chita’Uri, in THE AVENGERS movie…)

Aside from Blade Trinity ( helmed by undisciplined David Goyer ), the Blade films were great, and Wesley made a kick ass hero.

It’d be great to see him drafted against his will, to help out S.H.I.E.L.D. or something…

Let’s hope it’s Ant Man and Black Panther.
Would LOVE to see both them in The Avengers 2 when that comes along.
I honestly think after Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Capt 2. They should move towards using standalone films ONLY as a way to introduce new members to the Avengers with the series constantly continuing as the big box office Avengers movie every 3-4 years.
Hell they could drag that for 10 Avengers films with all the heroes and villains in the Marvel universe.
And the best part…. They can ALL BE AWESOME!!!
The amount of storylines Marvel has to use is almost infinite.

  • F!reBoy

We need a Black Panther movie. set in Africa! how cool would that be?

  • Dodge_hickey

Marvel can do what ever the flip they want!

…….as long as they keep up the quailty of films like they have been doing the past few years, I see AntMan and another Avengers related character (Black Panter with Anthony Mackie!) along before Avengers 2….

  • sean

    Dear Nerds,
Can we stop with the Rumors of a Guardians of the Galaxy film? We should all be amazed and grateful that the Avengers came out as well as it did… they’re not about to start all over just to make your precious dreams come true and have the storyline work out the way you want. Read your comics, watch your movies, but don’t ever expect the 2 to respect each other… that’s just looking for disappointment.

  • MP

    Dear Sean,
Stop being such a Debbie Downer. Fiege already confirmed that Guardians if the Galaxy is in development and honestly more has been heard about that film and Ant-Man than any other property. Why would they start over to make Guardians? You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Movies and comics can clearly respect one another (see Avengers or the Nolan Bat-series).

    • Pocketses

Whoa there, cowboy. What he’s saying, and he’s right, is that it is implausible to expect comics to be translated perfectly to film, and no, the Nolan films do NOT at all count. Firstly, they’re independent stories with Nolan’s own agenda and twist thrown in. They are very good films, but they do not translate the Batman story perfectly. They twist the characters to his bidding (usually for at least good, if not better than original results)…

  • sense 11

I would love to see a Black Panther movie

  • pDUB

i see them doing a cage movie before they do a black panther movie, and i can honestly see them having a hard time marketing a black panther movie just in general, ive been proved wrong before though.

  • CerpynCarpiog

It could well be runaways. wasn’t it put on hiatus fro the avengers. I think that would work really well as an antidote to the other super hero movies

    • Jesus

Why would they want an antidote? Their other properties are making money.

  • Trish

Isn’t there another Wolverine movie coming out? Or does that not count?

    • feloniousmax

Wolverine, though a Marvel character, is on 20th Century Fox’s film roster not Disney/Marvel so it doesn’t count, all X-Men related properties film rights are held by 20th Century Fox

  • ron

Excuse me, Mr Feige, can I please have a film w/Matt Murdock-Daredevil?

    • Cartersvillevol

Daredevil is still a Fox property.

      • Jesus

Actually, Marvel regains the rights to Daredevil at the end of this year.

  • Banes

More character will kill the Avengers I know everybody excited about new characters For Avengers team but more superhero will kill the Avengers sequel, it works only on Tv show comics books but in movie it will not work with much superheroes characters.

  • Nomis1700

It will be Ant-Man (I always have to laugh about him) and Guardians of the Galaxy. But I want to see another Hulk film with Ruffalo and Dr. Strange seems very interesting..

  • Ash Talon

I also think the 2 films will be Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. Not because I’m a nerd, but those 2 films have been getting the most mentions from Fiege and seem to be the furthest along.

Ant-Man could end up being directed by Joe Cornish, as Joh Jhon suggests, which I’d be alright with. Attack the Block turned out really well, so I’d like to see him turned loose on a Marvel project.

GotG can be an obvious set-up film for Avengers 2. Thanos could feature in part of it and set the stage for A2. I think Marvel should have another hint or two of Thanos in their upcoming post-credits scenes and/or introduce the GotG in them. GotG doesn’t need to have much household recognition going into it. Set it up in the other Marvel movies, market it as a prelude to Avengers 2, and it’ll find its audience. I think it could make an interesting sci-fi adventure movie and could end up being another potential franchise. This isn’t because I love the material (although the current GotG is a highly-enjoyable book), but the film industry is lacking a really good sci-fi adventure property right now (the re-envisioned Star Trek isn’t so hot in my mind).

  • Sugreev2001

Before anything,I want a Dr.Strange movie and a Black Panther movie. There are tons of great actors who would fit right into the role of Dr.Strange.Black Panther would be a little tricky, but I hope it’s done with the same seriousness and love that Marvel has shown for these 5 films.Chweitel Ejiofer would make for a perfect BP,and Johnny Depp has been my top choice for Strange since the early 2000s.

  • Wolfgang

Ant Man and Black Panther? Could you all pick a more boring set of characters? I wish they would do an X-Men 4 and finally do it right.

    • Lizard King

Congrats on sounding silly. Marvel doesn’t have the movie rights to the X-Men, so for them to consider making an X-Men movie would be out of the question (other than Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; I believe they get some leeway with those characters).

  • Dre Dre

A S.H.I.E.L.D prequel perhaps, focusing on the origins of Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury….yeah not gonna happen.

  • Lizard King

I would love it if they would set up Ant-Man, The Vision, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, or Black Panther to be in Avengers 2. Obviously that means they would need to oust a few characters. Come up with a semi-believable reason why Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the Hulk aren’t answering their phones, and you can insert another 3 heroes with relative ease.

  • Mike

It was a smart move to keep the Avengers as the sole movie this year.

  • mike.a

Ant man should be cool, black panther I don’t know only person I can think of for the role is Wesley. I wish fox owned the rights to the punished films. 3 films so far and nobody seems to get it right.

  • Rockslide

If I had my two picks it would be Dr. Strange and Heroes for Hire. Thunderbolts might be interesting too.

  • Tony Stark

My guess is another Hulk film since they did sign on Mark Ruffalo for a 6 movie deal.

  • Jehosophat

My guess is they’ve realized by now the Hulk is just a difficult character to build an entire movie around – BUT that he’s entirely more likeable and AWESOME if he can stand alongside other characters, and add a little ridiculously smashing fun to their worlds.

So – Ruffalo cameo in Iron Man 3?

Do something that we haven’t seen (in comics) in a while, and have
Cap take on the Hulk for a brotherly grudge match in Cap 2 ???

Allow a cinematic equivalent of Hulk vs. Thor and have Hulk pay a rather destructive visit to Asgard? (Maybe best saved for Thor 3, if they ever get there….)

Guardians of the Galaxy’s just going to be a difficult pill to swallow for a general audience I think … but the other-worldly stuff could work in the context of …
DR. STRANGE. (who could also tackle the Hulk at some point, and in the process create the DEFENDERS.)

Jesus Christ, I am SUCH a comic nerd. Avengers, I blame you for regressing me back into a 13 yr. old boy ! hahaha

  • Joe

Hulk… No way they only signed Ruffalo for six years to be support on other movies. Please excuse my ignorance, but isn’t there some type of Planet Hulk story arc?

Absolutely agree that we need the Vision to be introduced, as well as Quicksilver and, even more important, his sis’ (the Scarlet Witch). How can the Avengers be the Avengers without Vision/Scarlet?!

What about the Fantastic 4? End of the line for them? We could have an Avengers/Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover tied to Dr Doom/Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch..

Please spare us absolutely boring losers such as Ant/Giant Man/Yellowjacket and Wasp.

Also: we need Silver Surfer back, Namor in and the Defenders.
