Writer-Director Jeff Wadlow Talks KICK-ASS 2; Chloe Moretz in Talks to Return

A couple weeks ago, we reported that Universal was close to green-lighting Kick-Ass 2 written and directed by Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down), and produced by Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn.  At the Kapow! Comic Convention, Wadlow confirmed that shooting would begin in September.  However, he added that Chloe Moretz had not officially signed on to reprise her role as Hit-Girl, which may be a bit of a problem since Wadlow had significantly expanded the character’s role from what it was in Mark Millar‘s comic series.

Hit the jump for more on Wadlow’s plans for adapting Kick-Ass 2.

kick-ass-2-comic-book-coverSpeaking to the audience at Kapow! [via CBM], Wadlow says the movie will have more of an emotional story to tell (it doesn’t surprise me that Millar’s comic lacks one):

I think the most important thing that’s gonna change from the Kick-Ass 2 comic to Kick-Ass 2 the movie was just really finding an emotional story to tell. Because what I certainly loved about the first film, and what I think elevated it above most comic book adaptations, is the heart and the emotion in the film. It was sort of my challenge as the film maker and storyteller to find something as emotional in the second film and I think we have some stuff that people are gonna really respond to.

More than the emotions of the first movie, audiences really responded to Hit-Girl, and Wadlow talked about how the character has a much bigger role in his script than she does in the book:

If you’ve read the comic, you know, she gives up being Hit-Girl, which was a brilliant idea I thought on Mark’s part. It’s something I explore something quiet deeply in the movie because what happens in the comic is she sort of steps away from the story in many ways and she’s sort of sidelined while Dave is working with Justice Forever and Chris is becoming the Mother[frick]er. But I was quite interested in what happens to her when she’s not being Hit-Girl. Her story is a major, major part of the film and she’s excited about the ideas and we’re in talks.

It would be great to see Moretz return, but her career has exploded since playing Hit-Girl in 2010.  In that time, she’s landed lead roles in Let Me In and Hick, and played major supporting roles in Hugo and Dark Shadows.  Moretz is now set to lead the remake of Carrie, she might play the title character in the zombie film Maggie, and this summer she’s shooting a supporting role in the Dennis Wilson biopic The Drummer.  Since Carrie already has a March 15, 2013 release date, that movie would have to shoot in late July-August if Moretz wants to do Kick-Ass 2.  Of course, if Wadlow is so intent on Moretz returning, then he may have to push back the start date of Kick-Ass 2 to accommodate the talented young actress’ busy schedule.

I dunno why you guys doubt that Chloe Moretz will return to the role that put her in the limelight. She’s been dying to return to it since the first film made it big. Yeah, she’s acted in some high profile films. But she’s not exactly out shined the other actors in those films.

She needs a film that she can call her own. A film where she’s the lead. And Kick Ass 2 would be it. I mean, she made the other actors in the first one irrelevant. That’s why Wadlow is focusing the sequel entirely on Hit Girl and not on the “other” superhero.

Besides, Chloe rarely turns down a role. She will return.

It will be interesting to seee what happens wth Hit-Girl in the the sequel and i hope that Moretz can accommodate her schedule for making this film.

I agree with the other posters. She needs to return for this. She made the first one

I love Chloe as Hit Girl and she must be in Kick-Ass 2 because without her the movie can’t be good.

I am very concerned that this will not be remotely as good as the first. What made the studios and producers, which include Matthew Vaughn, decide on this guy.He has made two terrible movies in the past, and is in no way talented enough to make a kick-ass sequel (pun intended)/

It wasnt just her; it was the great report she had with Cage. It is sad they killed him off because I would love to see another father/ daughter team up with them kicking ass and taking names.

I agree i loved Big Daddy and Hit-Girl together, but his death scene was amazing. Hopefully they get Nic Cage to appear in a dream sequence talking to Mindy right before she becomes Hit-Girl again (like Peter and Uncle Ben in Spider-man 2).

Chloe is holding out for more $$$.

To clarify a little about Chloe’s schedual: She starts filming “Carrie” in June. “The Drummer” was supposed to start filming June 15th, so she either dropped out or they posponed it. (I hope she dropped out). “Maggie” was reportedly being filmed in September, same time as Kick Ass 2, which does make me worry. On top of all that “The Rut” is supposed to start filming in October, and she’s still signed on to “Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” which just secured finanicng. Out of all this, I hope she (or her people) make Kick Ass 2 a priority because it would suck loads if she wasn’t in it and they got a new Hit Girl. Plus, I think Kick Ass 2 would be best for her career.

Am I missing something? Hit Girl was an adorable ass-kicking pint-sized kid. That’s what made the movie so fun to watch. Chloe is now a full-grown adult. Hit Woman?

    • cam

she’s 15. that’s still a girl. the “Hit Girl” comic has aged her in apperance. That might annoy you but wouldn’t a totally different actress playing Kick-Ass be as annoying?

    • MisterEd

“Chloe is now a full-grown adult”

^^^ Pffft! You must be from remote part of the world where a 15 year old kid is considered as “a full-grown adult”. She’s a kid.

And even if she were to return to play the character as an adult, it would still rock. Moretz is THAT good. The same way it would be great to see Natalie Portman return to the Mathilda role (from LEON or The Professional) as an adult woman.

I’m pretty sure she will return. The studio heads will be wise to accommodate the schedule for her to appear in it.

    • Robert

She’s still a kid and looks like one when he’s not all fashioned out. She can play Hit Girl fine.

This writer/director is terrifying for A) his ineptitude, B) his pretention, and C) his lack of legitimate credentials – other than being related to Katie Couric.

He considers his only movie, Never Back Down, to be “smart” and “fun?” I wanted to stab myself in the neck with my tv remote while watching that dreadful, slow treading trash. This guy worships slasher movies – and not even the right ones. Scary Movie and Urban Legend? Really? Scream? His comments are specious and pretentious, and it’s no surprise Matthew Vaughn detached himself from this project – the script is obviously trash.

There’s no other actress who can play Hit-Girl. Chloe Moretz is the original Hit-Girl and she MUST (absolutely) return in Kick-Ass 2 ‘cuz it’s her stuff — it’s her owning! Without her in the second movie, it’s gonna be nothing but a total disappointment. Kick-Ass 2 would really be an ass kicked if Chloe’s not in it >.<
