Jonás Cuarón‘s plans for a Zorro movie got some much-needed attention today with the news that Kiersey Clemons (Dope) will be starring in the picture opposite Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) in the title role. Titled simply Z, this reimagining of the classic swashbuckler in black finds him carving up a futuristic landscape–maybe a post-apocalyptic one–but few other details are available.

ScreenDaily originally reported that Clemons has joined as the female lead, along with the news that Z is supposed to start filming this June. However, this project has been stop-and-start for a while; it previously planned to start shooting in both the summer and the fall of 2016, but clearly that hasn’t happened. When it does get going, Z will be produced by Sobini Films and Lantica Media, with Anne-Marie Ross of Pantelion International shopping the pic in Berlin and UTA Independent Film Group representing domestic rights.

Here’s what producer Mark Amin had to say about Clemons coming aboard:

“Kiersey is an extraordinary young talent and we are delighted to have her join a growing list of unique actors who will inhabit the imaginative world of Jonás Z.”

As for Clemons’ other projects, she just appeared in co-writer/director Brett Haley‘s Hearts Beat Loud, which landed a deal with Sony Pictures Classics; she’s expected to appear in the Blumhouse Productions’ thriller Sweetheart this year and, of course, in John Francis Daley  and Jonathan Goldstein‘s Flashpoint movie, whenever that gets going. On the small screen, she’ll next star in TBS’ offbeat comedy series Angie Tribeca
