First KILL THE MESSENGER Trailer Features Jeremy Renner and a Conspiracy Involving the Government and Crack

     May 29, 2014

Focus Features has released the first Kill the Messenger trailer.  Directed by Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter), the film is based on the true story of news reporter Gary Webb, whose life was ruined when he linked the CIA to a scheme to arm Contra rebels in Nicaragua and import cocaine into California.  His investigation not only threatened to ruin his career, but also his life and the life of his family.  This looks like it will be a good showcase for Renner, and while I like seeing him in blockbusters and high-profile awards contenders, I like that he’s going to be in a nuts-and-bolts story centered around a worthwhile topic.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Liotta, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Oliver Platt, Andy Garcia, Tim Blake Nelson, Robert Patrick, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Paz VegaKill the Messenger opens October 10th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Kill the Messenger:

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Bourne Legacy”) leads an all-star cast in a dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation’s streets…and further alleges  that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications. His journey takes him from the prisons of California to the villages of Nicaragua to the highest corridors of power in Washington, D.C. – and draws the kind of attention that threatens not just his career, but his family and his life.

That is a cast to kill a messenger for! I mean, Renner, Pepper, and Sheen? Count me excited and intrigued!

    • Person

One of my most anticipated of the year.

This is one of those movies I can’t wait to see, even though nobody even knows about it.

Looks good!! Really hope many people see this, and especially those who are unaware of the story. How corrupt do things have to get before people say enough:)

Wow, I disagree with all the below comments. I thought the trailer did a hug disservice to the film. It just looks ordinary and derivative to me and selling it on Renner’s name alone? I don’t think so. We’ll see how big a fan base Renner has, but I can’t see this being any good or attracting audiences. I could be wrong and it’ll depend on what else is opening on Oct. 10th. Maybe the studio and marketing research knows something I don’t about Renner’s appeal, but I don’t get the guy at all.

    • rhizomeman

I don’t understand the appeal of Renner either, but the Webb story is too important to ignore. I’m just glad a mainstream movie was made about this – that’s what is most important.

      • Bo

Thanks for your reply and very well said. I agree. However, there have been films about this before and I am not naive enough to think or believe that this one more will have any positive effect. We can only hope so, but alas, I fear not.

You do understand that Renner has not just been cast in the film? He and his production company developed the material, with the support of Webb’s family and that amazing cast is almost certainly working for him at a knock down price either because they are friends or because they were prepared to accept a favor in return e.g. he is playing on Martin Sheen’s team in a big charity soccer match next weekend. This is Renner’s passion project and if it wasn’t for him it wouldn’t have been made at all. No star guarantees box office these days, the story will either resonate or it will not and this is just the first salvo in four month process. The real plus of having Renner is that he will fight for it all the way and the Academy likes him.

      • Bo

Well, okay…thanks for your reply and all the information contained within…however, I’m not too sure how correct you are with all of it as you stated he’s on Martin Sheen’s soccer team when Martin is not in the movie. Michael Sheen is. Just a typo or are you totally misinformed with regards as to who is in the movie? Makes no difference to me as I’ve no interest in Renner as an actor or producer or whatever. I’m sure he’s a nice person, I just find him totally uninteresting and don’t like his work. My right…righto?

      • Jackie

Yes it was a mistake, I hate to be dismissive of the older generation, but I sincerely doubt that at his stage in life Martin Sheen could manage 90 minutes at Old Trafford. Of course you are entitled to your own opinion and considering how disinterested you are it is inspiring that you are taking the time to comment so freely on this and other websites.

      • Bo

Well, inspiring or not is not for me to say or even agree with. However, my disinterest in certain actors or films does not alter or affect my interest in discussing films, regardless if I find them interesting or not! Make sense?

I love the first sentence of the synopsis. “Two time Academy Award Nominee Jeremy Renner (“title of crappy movie he wasn’t nominated for”)…”

  • Javan Clark

This is such an important story!! So many people are clueless about the crack epidemic that laid waste to Black America and the CIA’s role in starting it. This is finally going to see the light and I for one very very happy about it.

    • poppincherry

To add to that brotha, how can the drug dealers make millions in the hood when the hood ain’t got no money.

  • Redjester

This looks great! Excellent cast as well!

LOL! I don’t know what’s more funny, Jeremy’s hair, goatee and mustache or the crack part in the title. LOL!!!!!

  • poppincherry

There you go America. You want the truth then there it is. Oh by the way, go to south central LA and watch all the gangs sell drugs, conspicuously, for the most notorious drug syndicates on earth every single day.
What you gonna do about it. Fuck worrying about Obama, Bengate, VA-gate, fast and the furious etc.
