Square-Enix finally revealed two long-awaited games as yesterday’s E3.  One was Kingdom Hearts III.  I really dig Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, but have ignored all the filler games except for Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, which was the reason I ignored all the other games.  Still, I’ve been holding out hope for the true sequel, but now that it’s actually happening, I’m conflicted.  Will I have to play 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, Re:coded, and Dream Drop Distance to understand the plot of KH 3?  Also, after not having played KH 2 since 2005, I wonder if I’ll still be enchanted by the franchise.

Then there’s Final Fantasy XV, formerly Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a game that was announced seven years ago, and apparently stuck in development hell forever.  Instead, it was being redesigned for the next generation consoles, and looks just as silly as any other JRPG.  I mean that in a complimentary way.  I used to straight-up love JRPGs because of Final Fantasy VII, but now I enjoy them for their exaggerated worlds and overly-wrought melodrama.  Going by the trailer, it looks like XV involves warring kingdoms and magical crystals, which is great because it’s not like Final Fantasy has done that 6 or 7 times.  Hit the jump to check out both trailers.  Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV will be released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Here’s the synopsis for Kingdom Hearts III:

Kingdom Hearts III features a mature Sora as the main protagonist who sets forth on an adventure with Mickey, Donald and Goofy through new and legendary Disney worlds. Kingdom Hearts III will make full use of next generation console technologies to showcase a stunning universe packed full of worlds based on Disney properties.

Believing light and darkness must remain in balance, Master Xehanort seeks to spark war against the ‘tyranny of light’ to restore equilibrium. In an effort to undermine Xehanort’s plot, Sora, Donald and Goofy search for seven guardians of light and the “Key to Return Hearts,” while King Mickey and Riku search for previous Keyblade wielders.

Here’s the synopsis for Final Fantasy XV:

In the game, the armed forces of Niflheim launch a devastating assault upon the Kingdom of Lucis, casting Crown Prince Noctis and his comrades out of their homes and into the fray. The engaging tale to follow draws audiences into an awe-inspiring world steeped in the rich storytelling traditions of Square Enix’s renowned First Production Development team.

Don’t know if you look at these comments Mr. Goldberg, but no you won’t have to play the others. Kind of. If you pick up the HD remake on Playstation 3 that’s coming this year it will have KH 1, 2, and CoH. Along with that it will have cutscenes from Dream Drop Distance and 358/2 Days. I believe that’s how its going to be anyways.
Like I said, don’t know if you read these, but I gotta help a fellow gamer out!

KH2 and Dream Drop Distance won’t be included. It’s just going to be HD remasters of KH1 (the Final Mix version that never made it to the US), Re: Chain of Memories, and the cutscenes from 358/2 Days.

Aha, and right you are, sir. Well, that almost puts ME off it. I was really looking forward to playing HD KH2! Eh, probably still pick it up anyways.

the game you are referring to is kingdom hearts 1.5 remix. and actually they are planning to make a sequel to that that will include kh2 final mix, kh birth by sleep and kh coded. the game director said it would be unnatural not to make a part two.

he definitely should play Birth by Sleep, otherwise he wont really understand who what and why in Kingdom Hearts 3. and maybe read a wiki plot synopsis on dream drop distance since its the game leading into KH3.

definitely go and play Birth by Sleep, while it was a portable game it was the most important filler as far as story goes, a lot of mythos answered and it really set up the story for Kingdom Hearts 3. It will most likely still be a year before we get KH# and Birth by Sleep is an important filler, take the time to give it a play through. and also read the plot synopsis of Dream Drop Distance, it was more filler but the final act leads directly into KH3
