Red-Band Trailer for Sundance Hit THE KINGS OF SUMMER

     May 20, 2013

A red-band trailer for director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ coming-of-age comedy/drama The Kings of Summer has been released online.  The story centers on Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso), and Biaggio (Moises Arias), three teenagers who are fed up with their parents and decide to live in a house they build in the woods.  Reported missing, the boys enjoy an idyllic summer until their friendship begins to strain from mistrust and jealousy.  The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews, and while I wasn’t as smitten with it as most people, it’s undeniably a unique piece of filmmaking.  This trailer does a nice job of teasing the film’s tone and attitude, which I’d describe as a bit like a reverse Step Brothers meets Stand By Me by way of Terrence Malick.  There’s also a tease of the film’s funniest scene by far, which involves Nick Offerman interacting with a delivery boy played by Kumail Nanjiani.

Hit the jump to watch the red-band trailer, and click here to view four clips.  The film also stars Alison Brie, Megan Mullaly, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Erin Moriarty.  The Kings of Summer opens on May 31st.

Here’s the official synopsis of The Kings of Summer:

Premiering to rave reviews at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, THE KINGS OF SUMMER is a unique coming-of-age comedy about three teenage friends – Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) and the eccentric and unpredictable Biaggio (Moises Arias) – who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. Free from their parents’ rules, their idyllic summer quickly becomes a test of friendship as each boy learns to appreciate the fact that family – whether it is the one you’re born into or the one you create – is something you can’t run away from.

I didn’t think this movie looked like anything special, but this trailer has totally changed my mind. It looks hilarious. Lots of good movies coming out this year.

I hold out hope, but the young actors are very self aware they are making a film. Plus, the “hyper active” one of the bunch looks and feels very much like that one kid we’ve all known whose schtick is funny and amusing for 2 minutes, then you want to slap.

What’s the name of the song played in the trailer?
