One of the best films of 2015 thus far was most certainly Kingsman: The Secret Service. This riff on James Bond and the spy genre in general was a bloody good time in every sense of the word, and also introduced a rising new talent in star Taron Egerton. While the picture placed second to Fifty Shades of Grey at the box office opening weekend, it—like another recent, great R-rated film—had extremely strong legs at the box office and went on to gross over $400 million at the worldwide box office.

Fans were understandably clamoring for more, and in April we learned that 20th Century Fox was officially developing a sequel. Details beyond that, including the involvement of director/co-writer Matthew Vaughn were scarce, but now Vaughn has revealed via Yahoo! UK that’s he’s in the midst of writing the follow-up himself:

“The good news is I’m writing it next door at the moment, and if I think I can get the script good enough, then we’ll make it. Stay tuned, but we’re doing our damndest to make that happen.”

Vaughn previously hinted that the follow-up might focus on the American Kingsman, and when asked in the Yahoo Q&A who he thinks would make a good American agent, he replied:

“All I can say is you’ll find out in two years in the sequel.”

The question on everyone’s minds is whether Colin Firth will return, given where things ended with his character in the first film. I thought his character was incredible so I’d love to see him back, but if not I do think Egerton did a spectacular job all his own, so it’d also be neat to see him carry on the franchise with Mark Strong in tow.

Vaughn did offer a tiny hint about his approach to the follow-up when answering why he doesn’t tend to make sequels:

“I’m trying to reinvent how to do a sequel right now and it’s tough.”

The filmmaker has a knack for churning out unique and thrilling films, so I’ve got faith he can pull it off. Here’s hoping Kingsman: The Secret Service 2 turns out well and actually gets made.
