‘Kong: Skull Island’: New Trailer Teases a Stylish, Colorful, Very Different ‘King Kong’ Movie

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the upcoming blockbuster Kong: Skull Island. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer), the film re-envisions the iconic King Kong in a story that takes place in the midst of the Vietnam War, with a diverse team of explorers venturing deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific, only to come across the beast himself.

This trailer delves much more into the story of Kong: Skull Island than the previous one that debuted at Comic-Con this summer, and it appears that this is far from a King Kong remake. Indeed, there are more antagonistic beasts on the island besides the giant ape, as we get a look at the “skull-walkers” that appear to be the main “bad guys” that our heroes (including Kong) will be fighting. It makes sense, as Warner Bros. and Legendary are building towards a Kong vs. Godzilla movie that will build off of Skull Island and the foundation Gareth Edwards set with Godzilla, and one imagines there will be a mighty big Monarch connection to whatever other creatures are found on Skull Island.

The tone of the film also looks to be quite different than I expected. Vogt-Roberts juggled a number of tones in his debut feature Kings of Summer, which he said was influenced by Michael Bay‘s overblown Bad Boys IIa film that blended a variety of tenors and genres into one movie. That could certainly be the case here, as Vogt-Roberts looks to have crafted a gorgeously colorful and stylish blockbuster with elements of humor, horror, and even war drama. So yeah, I’m intrigued.

Watch the new Kong: Skull Island trailer below. Scripted by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly, the film stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero. Kong: Skull Island opens in theaters on March 10, 2017.
