After taking plenty of time deciding what she would do post-Twilight, actress Kristen Stewart has booked roles in a pair of indies that will shoot this summer. Deadline reports that Stewart will lead the political drama Camp X-Ray and will star in the drama Sils Maria. In Camp X-Ray, Stewart will play a young soldier who joins the military in order to escape small town life, only to discover that she is assigned to Guantanomo Bay where strikes up a friendship with a young prisoner and suffers hatred and abuse from the Muslim men in her charge. Peter Sattler wrote and will make his feature directorial debut on the project, and filming begins late this summer. Hit the jump for more on Sils Maria.
Additionally, Stewart has joined the cast of Summer Hours director Olivier Assayas’ film Sils Maria. The pic “explores middle age and that introspective period where one questions how they’ve spent their life so far and what they’ve accomplished.” Juliette Binoche stars, and Stewart will play her assistant, an actress who becomes obsessed with a young actress (Chloe Grace Moretz) who is playing the role that made the older actress famous when she was young. Filming begins this summer in Europe.
Stewart was originally set to star in the Warner Bros. con artist film Focus opposite Ben Affleck, but Affleck departed the project in order to devote his time to his next directorial effort, and Stewart subsequently left the film as well. Universal continues to develop a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman and is aiming for a 2015 release, but the film still lacks a director. In the meantime, it appears that Stewart is content with taking a bit of a break from franchise filmmaking in order to stretch her acting chops in more low-key fare.
