Kristen Wiig Options CLOWN GIRL; Plans to Star in Lead Role

     May 6, 2010

Kristen Wiig (SNL, Extract) has optioned and plans to star in an adaptation of Clown Girl.  The darkly comical 2007 novel by Monica Drake tells the story of Nita, “a struggling clown who is struggling to live and tries to resist the potentially lucrative prostitution trade involving clown fetishists.”  Deadline reports that Wiig used her own money to option the novel.

I think that Wiig has proven herself to be great in movies after a series of scene stealing performances (Knocked Up, Adventureland) and I can see her handling a dark comedy like this perfectly.  You can see Wiig in MacGruber later on this month.  She’s also set to star in the currently untitled Judd Apatow-produced bridesmaid comedy, which she co-wrote with Annie Mumolo.
