DreamWorks Animation has posted the synopsis for Kung Fu Panda 2 to the official KFP site. The gist is that Po (voiced by Jack Black) and The Furious Five must battle an enemy who plans to use a weapon that can “destroy kung fu” to conquer China. Perhaps this device is what the possible subtitle, The Kaboom of Doom, refers to. As you can see in the image above, DreamWorks has added a “2″ to the Kung Fu Panda type to give the sequel a logo, as well.
Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, and Dustin Hoffman are all set to reprise their roles from the first movie; they will be joined by Gary Oldman, Jean Claude Van Damme, Michelle Yeoh, and Victor Garber for Kung Fu Panda 2‘s May 27, 2011 3D release. Po is now living his dream as The Dragon Warior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five – Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey. But Po’s new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu.
It is up to Po and The Furious Five to journey across China to face this threat and vanquish it. But how can Po stop a weapon that can stop kung fu? He must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed.

Charlie Kaufman re-wrote the script.. so it’s interesting what his first credited-animated film will look like.
Dreamworks is starting to bring on some great people in their studio.. Deakins, Kaufman, Del Toro.. they might be on to something this decade.. if they could only get rid of some of their bad habits(famous people for voices is always their biggest priority. how about story and characters as biggest priority?)
Kung Fu Panda may have a banal story.. but as a person studying animation, the fight scenes their is one of the hardest to do when making a 3d animated film.. i admire it more than love it.
Don’t forget Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois, How to Train Your Dragon was far and away the best film I’ve seen come out of DreamWorks Animation.
i know they’re most famous with the Shrek franchise(and i kind of like Shrek 2 alot. it was fun) and in some ways Kung Fu Panda.. but i agree with you, if I’m ask to name Dreamworks’ masterpiece(okay, not really a masterpiece, but their best work and most polished) it would be How to Train Your Dragon.. No big names for the film(Butler ain’t that big of a star), and while the story is simple, it has alot of heart..
plus the lighting of that animated movie should be considered for oscars.. Deakins involvement as a visual consultant really payed off. it’s like one of his photograph films, only animated.
I am definitely with you on the fact that DreamWorks has a tendency to utilize famous names as a priority. There are a ton of great voice actors out there that aren’t widely recognized. However, the first Kung Fu Panda was awesome. I loved it from beginning to end. I ashamedly haven’t gotten around to seeing DRAGON, but I hear it’s great. I’m definitely excited to see if they can put story first again and give something more than a few laughs.
